  1. If the majors abandon producing CDs in favor of music publishing, the former will be back in the hands of independents - I can't see anything bad in this.
  2. I have one on my buying list, too - or rather two: One to get rid of the low buzz my cartridge picks up from the turntable motor, and the second for the tuner antenna, which caused distortion on the SACD signal path!
  3. In Memory Of Carla White, 1951-2007 On May 9, 2007 Carla White, one of the best (IMHO) but underrated jazz singers on the scene, passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer (obituary thread). I always thought I should bring her to the attention of this board's members, as critical as most are towards vocalists. She was my favourite female vocalist ever since I heard her wild scatting on her first LP, co-led with trumpeter Manny Duran, and kept buying her albums as soon as they came out. I was never disappointed. She kept her scatting chops up until the most recent album, although the great American songbook as well as a number of nice originals outnumbered the scat tracks in the last ten years. Go to her website at Jazz Corner for comprehensive info. Since I loved her music so much I decided to compile her discography and asked her for some info via e-mail - she responded immdiately, bewildered by the fact that a jazz fan in distant Germany was attracted to her music. Besides being a scat nut I love the feeling of life experience in her singing - her stories are always enlivened by the ups and downs of her own life. I always wanted to feature one of her albums as AOTW - I so sorry I'm a little too late. She took so much effort in this and her next to last album, produced them herself and struggled for five years each time until she finally had them released - and founded her own label in the end, like so many others, and used CD Baby as distributor - click here to order. You can use the link on her website as well to buy this or her other CDs available - the price may seem high but part of the money goes to the Jazz Cares Fund. Check out the CD - the sidemen are top, Claudio Roditi especially playing at his very best. Lew Tabackin was a close friend and featured on some earlier CDs. There's much to discover in this singer's work.
  4. They're afraid of the abundance of Yurpeean rarities ....
  5. Go Ahead John is in the Jack Johnson Sessions box - IIRC you have all the studio material from Big Fun, Live Evil etc. when you have that and the BB box.

    Stanley Clarke

Compared to his latest CD, all the albums mentioned so far are fusion, more or less, except for the Tyner. Now this latest really is straightahead: But I have to admit that I found Patrice Rushen the most impressive here - very thorough modern jazz pianist that has it all down and plays the most engaging here. Nice surprise.
  7. Not much that I can add except a big Happy Birthday!!!!! and an even bigger Thank You!!!! THIS IS THE PLACE!!!
  8. ... and to further the attractiveness of cigars:
  9. That's always been a weak point of most BFTers.
  10. Yes - I'm on a DSL connection since December.

    Chopin

Considering the age at which Chopin died, he didn't have so much time either ...

    Chopin

My all-time favourite Chopin disc is by Arthur Schoonderwoerd on alpha: This recording leaves absolutely nothing left to be desired! Got rave reviews in Germany everywhere, no matter the preference for historical pianos. If there's a good introduction to the beauty of a Pleyel Grand Piano in excellent condition, it's here. The Polish guy is Janusz Olejniczak, his discs are on Opus 111, which now belongs to the Naive label group (CD Universe CD list). He also played the composer in an excellent film on Chopin, La note bleue - go see it if you can - hearing the piano concerto in that movie moved me to tears! Thanks for trusting me - although I am a big fan of period inmstruments, I only recommend absolutely top recordings to others.
  13. I bought the Jimmy Coe Delmark reissue LP last year - real good stuff! So I think I got at least one Johnny Lytle recognized ..... rare and inspiring selections!
  14. Good to see you back to board business, MG! re # 1: I had that Chamblee Lp for a few years but sold it along with other stuff I noticed I almost never pulled out to listen to. Lou Bennett was a bad cat! I need some more of him! Rhoda Scott ..... need more of her, too! Reading through the answers makes the selections even more interesting. Great job!
  15. On their gig I witnessed last year Leonard King looked like he was smoking a little bit too much ... playing somewhat too loud and not really interacting.

    Stanley Clarke

Depends on what you prefer: Straightahead jazz or funk and fusion.
  17. Somehow I'm thinking that this will be one of the last dates Concord chooses to give to RVG for the reissue treatment. Shame, because its a classic session. Go for the OJCCCD - it sounds excellent!
  18. Got Booker Ervin's Freedom Book yesterday - had forgotten that I already owned the OJC CD version. The RVG sounds a bit brighter and more transparent, and has a bonus track - one of four leftovers that had been collected on the Groovin' High LP. That makes me hope for expanded RVG versions of The Blues Book and The Space Book.
  19. I was copying-and-pasting the credits for the album and totally forgot to comment about this. This must've been pretty early in Tom's career. Guy Harrell was a member of Santana's sister band (kind of) Azteca at the time. Many Azteca members helped out on Santana 3 and Caravanserai.
  20. This has always been and will always be the greatest Santana album, to these ears.
  21. That'a very good album - McBrowne's band was really underrated. Can't add much to what's been said about Lewis either - he had his own sound. R.I.P.
  22. AFAIK the Fitzwilliams were in personal contact with the composer, so this bears the stamp of authenticity.
  23. I keep asking myself whether I had this on vinyl and skipped it ..... I guess it was one of those albums I passed on for checking out later whenever I came across it, mainly because I suspected it to be one of those blowing dates. But now that I read it is not, it moves up on the buying list. Considering the short playing time it would have been an ideal candidate for one of those twofer CDs.
