So how much does one have to pay for a copy of the Fontana issue of "Tears for Dolphy", or a Japansese reissue?
-
Same here!

I never experienced a bandleader charging me for demo material of music we were supposed to play, no matter if the gig took place or not. If it's true, it certainly is exaggerated. If you want the guys to play the music, you have to provide them with the necessary materials. That's part of the cost of the leader - period. Can you imagine the Duke charging his men for the sheet music? Ridiculous ....

Paul - could you post details (label, or where you ordered it) - I can't find it anywhere ....

This one with rare recordings from Belgian radio should also be interesting (Igloo records):

This was a license of a French Vogue session, but that label didn't include it in their reissues so far ...

I always enjoyed that album - it's one the few LPs I pull out with some regularity. I especially enjoy Caiphus Semenya's compositions on it, Larry Willis, but all play in good form, the grooves are nice - and yes, it's inspiring to hear Dudu in that context. Whoa, have the Masekela sides been reissued anywhere? All Dudu is good Dudu, and with Larry Willis? That Impulse twofer was the reissue - of a Blue Thumb double LP. It was never on CD AFAIK. I like it a lot, more starightahead than the BOB, but pure jazz, with some funky undertones - Makaya Htshoko at the drums keeps it jazz all the way.

obliges is the key word here!

That Costa is the only piano soloist in Blues Suite was my thought, too ... I can distinguish between the two drummers and will have a listen again with this in mind.
-
Thanks! I may pick it up in Paris in August ...... p.s. I didn't - wasn't in the mood for buying CDs.

Very interesting pianist that never reached his limits due to his untimely death. There are some sessions with Hampton, but I doubt they feature him in any way. That trio sessions is listed Bruynincky as unissued, too - would be a miracle if the tapes turned up somewhere. The best feature besides that Somethin' Else CD is probably the small group sessions with Hamp (Lucky Thompson, Oscar Pettiford, Gus Johnson, Ray Copeland, Jimmy Cleveland also on board) - these need to be reissued! All I know about him comes from the liner of the Tangier CD .... thanks for the photo!

Is there a tracklist for this one?

No idea - never heard of him before. Must have been an extremely rare LP (500 copies initially pressed) before the reissue.

Drummer Doug Hammond (now a resident of Linz, Austria) once had her sing a jazz tune on one of his LPs - she did very well. Best wishes!

Yeah, and one of my favourites! Sadly only few of his albums have been on CD so far: The quartets with Martial Solal on Vogue are OOP. There is an Italian Schema Rearward CD including his Ensadinado album, very nice stuff.

Paul - was the frist thread lost that you started with this question? Anyway - the two LJQ sessions on the Hot Sauce CD are all I could find with Willie Coleman .... Perhaps Amalbert knows what became of him - his website is http://www.eastwestrecords.com/.

I'm just contemplating on why I never got around to buying this one back then .... First of all, a friend of mine had it, as well as others from South African musicians, and we had long listening sessions. Second, it was all over the radio - these probably were the reasons why I skipped it. This was my introduction to S.A.Jazz - way before Abdullah Ibrahim. Their ensemble spirit still lingers in my memory.

Do you borrow / lend out cds from your collection?
mikeweil replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I lent out a rare LP once - and it was ruined, not by the friend I gave it to, but someone else in the house who didn't care for putting them back into their jackets. Never did it again. CDs I give to a handful of trusted friends who treat them as carefully as I do and know the value of a rarity, and I never was disappointed - in return they will give me some from their collection whenever I ask for it. -
What about Cal Tjader? He suffered a heart attack during a tour on the Phillipine Islands - was that on stage etc.? Latin bandleader Pupi Campo died of a heart attack on the dance floor in front of the stage his band was playing on, if that counts .....
