  1. Linka! For some reason I missed his gig here two years ago, but Mr. Bassman was there - and raved about it! Yes I have that other disc .... and like it very much and always wondered how his other records are. Your theme was well conceived, and well executed, my hat is off!!!! And I can see where you get all those Quinton CDs ... But: now that you had me swallow the bait you won't get away with telling me this is oop
  2. Great job! I will link to this in the test master thread.
  3. Yeah! Feliz cumpleanos to our Texas branch!
  4. Well .... have they searched in Japan? As I mentioned above, I remember there were some Japanese CD reissues, so maybe ..... FWIW, here's the listing and commentary from the Felsted Discography page: This doesn't even mention the Japanese issues. I'm spinning the Japanese Polydor P33L 20043 CD issue of the Strayhorn right now - sound is okay, although the volume level is somewhat low. There must be some tapes - check Universal Japan, Affinity, Master Jazz (Mosaic did a Master Jazz box set so they should know where to ask). If that doesn't lead anywhere, I'd loan my CD copy any time - for a copy of the box set, that is ....
  5. you deserve some bonus !! Indeed! A tip o' the hat! That would make at least three MPS tracks?
  6. Great idea!
  7. Listening to this as Mr. Bassman brought it to the rehearsal earlier today. Curiously, I like the sound better than on the latest CD, althought these are MP3S - did you use compression, limiters etc. on This is the place? The drums especially are much more to my liking on your home recording, Jim - they must sound fuckin' incredible in high resolution.
  8. Yes and no. I think he might've gone as Johnny Hammond on Kudu, but there is also a blues guitarist named John Hammond (son of the famous record producer) which I have seen go as Johnny Hammond as well. Since I was curious about the one that recorded for Kudu/CTI, that answers my question. I'm aware of the other one, too.
  9. ...... and they don't make cars like that anymore, too!

    Dogon A.D.

Is that album title a reference to the mythology of the Dogon tribe in Africa? If so, has anyone here read about it as published in the book of French enthnologist Marcel Griaule?
  11. BTW - are this Johnny Hammond Smith and organist Johnny Hammond the same person?
  12. Contact MartyJazz who maintains an excel file like you desire - click here!
  13. The rolls on which these grand pianos are moved have locks, you just have to push down a lever at each of them to keep them in place. Pretty unprofessional to not use them ....
  14. I picked this up at a Zweitausendeins sale earlier this year and like it very much. I think Johnny Hammond Smith took very interesting choices as far as horn player are concerned - where can you hear Thad Jones with organ? I actually like to hear an organ sound recorded differently from RVG's.
  15. Where's Mr. Bassman to report? He told me he played the track to his guitarist friend, who is an absolute Scofield nut, and said it's not him, and liked that drummer very very much .....
  16. A positive vote from you, Jim, is good enough for me ...
  17. Now that's complete nonsense, as Tjader died of a heart attack in Manila on the Phillipines on May 5th, 1982 ..... in other words, that was the release date.
  18. My wife and I limited ourselves to a very small budget, and it worked, we still have some nice little things for each other. The packages are already piled up where the tree will stand .... I will grant me some of the budget Savoy CDs and Concord SACDs for the money my ebay sales brought up.
  19. Oh, Maynard .... I'm afraid I'm not as big a big band nut as you .... judging from your BFT, at least.
  20. Harry Pepl, one of Austria's most original jazz guitarists, died last Monday in a Vienna hospital at age 60. A short obituary in German can be found here. I knew him primarily through his brilliant collaboration with vibist Werner Pirchner - they recorded several albums including one with Jack DeJohnette for ECM, and the group Air Mail, which featured some of the best Austrian players with US bassist Mike Richmond. Thanks for your inspired playing, Harry!
  21. It's about time, on Concord - how's this?
  22. If I watch that growing list of Universal owned labels, I'm in doubt about memory failure ...
  23. Who's on it? I saw her live with her own band some years ago, the concept was nice, but I found her somewhat hyperactive .....
  24. Yes, I know about this reissue. Was that a CD or LP? Still curious about the exact recording dates and locations of the Concord.
  25. I have a Japanese pressing (Polydor KI 7605) of Verve LP MV 2556 The Modernity of Kenny Drew. Tracks are: Side A: Bluesville Angie I can make you love me (if you'll let me) My beautiful Lady Many miles away 52nd St. Theme Side B: I'll remember April Four and five Polka dots and moonbeams Lo Flame Chartreuse Kenny's Blues Sidemen are Eugene Wright on bass and Charles "Specs" Wright on drums. It's a good album, I like it as much as the Blue Note trio 10" LP.
