Okay, Rooster's at # 25 now. How about the next: king ubu, you be ready? And how about the next ones?

I think that's Daniel Messina at the drums - she did a duo CD with him.

Two of her church organ / Hammond mixed gigs are only a few miles from here - se ya, Barbara!
-
Seems it is not the first one: and there's even one on a church organ: With her bands I always found her very busy, playing at the top of her game all the time, which gets tiresome just because of her fantastic technical abilities. Maybe I will enjoy more her as a soloist. I will give it a try.

Nice comparison!

I repeat - I never saw any of these before! Thanks for serving my curiosity, Mike!

My first LP rack was self-made from chipboard, even on six wheels, but the damn thing was so heavy it didn't move - 3 rows 7 ft. wide. Of course they bent after a while. After I moved in here I got me shelves from Lundia, another Scandinavian brand IKEA copied their Ivar line from - they even made a line 35 cm deep (14 inches) that was ideal for stacking LPs - but they stopped making that size after LPs were no longer fashionable for the masses. Back then they asked me for a photo for other customers to prove they wouldn't bend. They have a smaller size that's nice for CDs, but they are not cheap, although their system is extremely flexible. I have a mix of theirs and selfmade racks. But all is solid wood.

... and what you save on dog food goes into the collection?

Great! One of my favourite jazz dance discs!

Seems they finally get the message, but only the first part. You know what the next parts are ...

Swing he did, yeah, but after the first set you knew what to expect. He always had an eye on the ladies at the side of the stage, which is alright with me, but he was showing down for them rather than putting in some more substance. The trio had that groove, but James Carter has so much going on it stays interesting. He is so talented he needs challenging partners to stay on a high creative level.

On the Verve CD it was John Pattitucci and Brian Blade. The former is too clean for my taste. I was underwhelmed by the CD. I saw the on TV from a European festival, with George Mraz and Willie Jones III. Mraz played well but didn't quite fit into the band's style. Jones was fantastic, IMO a better choice than Blade. The reworkings of tunes from Miles' bandbook is a nice idea, but it sounded so educated and "directed". I dunno. I like Herbie best when he cuts loose.

Found the Melvin Rhyne at my Frankfurt store yesterday - very nice, but didn't impress me quite as much as the previous Criss Cross Trio CDs. To fill the blank space - I just ordered this Baby:

I LOVE The Meters! I was heavily into Booker T. & the MG's when I first heard Sophisticated Cissy on AFN Europe and thought "What the hell are they doing!?" It was so much more sophisticated (pun intended) than the MG's. Their records were impossible to get over here back then, but I memorized them and only got a 2-CD compilation from Charly in the 1980's, which I still have, and play! I was so happy when a 13-old drum student of mine liked them so much that he wanted to burn it - I played Zigaboo to him when he played some stone dead funk patterns from a method his regular drum teacher had given to him, which weren't funky at all - but The Meters he liked much better and asked for more! Their loping rhythms with these unorthodox accents are so hip! But I find all the later stuff on Warner Bros. only a faint shadow from their earlier Josie recordings. Chicken Strut - some crazy music!

Perforated holes?!?!? Never seen any of them, at last on Elite CDs .

'If you don't take a job as a prostitute, we can

The two sides of a very sticky coin ... I bet German prostitutes never would have fought for the legal recognition of their job had they known about the implications of the new Hartz IV reforms. -
This is announced for CD reissue any day now - one of the few items still missing in my Tjader collection. It was on OJC LP and should be available used somewhere, methinks, if you prefer that.

Gerard Gibbs - is that the guy gigging with James Carter recently? Saw that trio - was a little disappointed, more show than substance and musical sophistication. James had both, but his accompanists were not up to par.
-
Seems like one to get. Link doesn't work - strange.

What does everyone do for a living?
mikeweil replied to TheMusicalMarine's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I beat my way through life - in other words, I am a percussionist playing gigs, giving drumming lessons, accompaynying dance classes during weekly lessons or workshops - one of my specialties is free improvising in dance therapy sessions. I used to study to become a psychologist, but that didn't feel right anymore after several years of playing music in my sparetime. I had a part time job in the bookkeeping of some local business for a few years but lost that a few years ago. Scuffling a little ever since. Right now I am renewing the flat below ours to open up a small cultural center for musical and therapeutic activities of all types - the rent will boost up our income. Very interesting thread - almost as interesting as the "Show us yer face" thread ! -
A few photos by Skip Bolen taken at the WEST COAST JAZZ JOURNALISTS AWARDS on June 21, 2004 at the Jazz Bakery at 3233 Helms Ave. in Los Angeles can be found here. Here's one:

My copies of these two are just like the first ones - all plain cardboard with the disc slipped in on one side and the booklet on the other. Were these manufactured differently in the US and Europe?

TJADER GOES LATIN and CAL TJADER QUINTET are both complete on Fantasy FCD-24730-2 - Cal Tjader - Black Orchid DEMASIADO CALIENTE is included in Fantasy FCD-24732-2 - Cal Tjader - Latino ! The studio version of "I Showed Them" was on Fantasy F-8406, a 1970 LP simply titled Tjader, which is one of the very few Tjader Fantasy albums not yet on CD.
