Only years of release, or years of recording as well?

That's Purple States, not blues ones, and are you sure whom they would vote for??? Anyway, the old design always reminded me that ORANGe was an anagram of ORGAN - but what now???!!!

She stated in an interview (down beat?) that her harp needs to be repaired for some years now. The Wurlitzer is on two tracks.

The Poll Winners LP was recorded on two days in may and June, 1960. Remember "Circle in the Round" was not issued at the time - it could mean Miles was dissatisfied with the results. Maybe he already wanted a Rhodes back then, but a celeste was all the studio had to offer, or the Rhodes was broke or out of tune - that happened easily to them. To detune a celeste - almost impossible (no pun intended).

As far as I remember Cannonball Adderley encountered Victor Feldman first on the occasion of his "Cannonball Meets the Poll Winners" LP for Riverside, an all-star affair with Wes Montgomery and Ray Brown, who all had just won down beat polls. Cannonball brought in Louis Hayes, and Orrin Keepnews contracted Victor Feldman who had built up a reputation as a reliable player through his L.A. studio work after his move there from Britain, and because his vibes might give a different sound to the band. They knew nothing about Feldman's jazz proficiency then and were amazed when he presented some of his tunes at the piano - they ended up having him play some tunes on piano and using two of his tunes. Cannonball had a hard time talking Feldman into joining his band - the latter hesitated to give up his lucrative studio musician's life for touring stress, and Miles may have had similar problems. At least he says so in his autobiography. If I remember correctly, Miles did not record with a vibraphonist other than Milt Jackson on two Prestige dates - I find it telling that he mentions these in his autobiography but does not use a single word on Bags' musical qualities. I doubt that he was attracted to the vibes sound. I think the resemblance to the Fender Rhodes piano sound is rather superficial. Miles says he began to like the sound after he heard Joe Zawinul play it in Cannonball's band - that was several years later.

Don't take me wrong - I like all kinds of jazz and other music beyond that, and have no problems with others disliking some of it. I just think one should rather say something is not to his/her taste or post the reasons for a negative judgement than simply dissing. I get the impression Chuck is somewhat too negative about a lot of the music. I appreciate his taste, and his work as a producer, but still like Horacee Arnold as well as Von Freeman ....

Got this today, purchased directly from the label, paid by PayPal. Took about a week to jump over the drink. Was skeptical at first as I got only a payment confirmation from PayPal but none from the label, but delivery was fast and reliable. The rhythmic concepts remind me of the Mahavishnu Orchestra - no small wonder, considering Jan Hammer is on board. Very good remastered sound! Like it very much and think Chuck's comment about it's worthlessness is inappropriate. Does anybody know who the uncredited tabla player is? Badal Roy? Neither Dom Um Romao nor David Earle Johnson were able to play like this.

Yeah, it's about time the remaing non-CD Verve Tjaders come out - if only as LPRs or rather digipacks and (regrettably) without additional material. These are the Verve Tjaders not yet on US CD: Verve V6-8419 - In A Latin Bag Verve V6-8459 - Saturday Night, Sunday Night At The Blackhawk Verve V6-8585 - Warm Wave Verve V6-8671 - Along Comes Cal Verve V6-8730 - Hip Vibrations Verve V6-8769 - The Prophet (A few tracks from these were on cimpilations and "The Prophet" was on Japanese CD.) That Basie set is great news! I was close to buying the Ocium CDs ......

These are three fifths of Weather Report's first lineup (Zawinul and Airto missing) - making it all the more interesting.

I had worked out a trade with some other board member concerning some SWR radio recordings by Oscar Pettiford with other US and German musicians - but the mail or PM seems to have been lost in some cleanup. I'm sorry, but whoever it was, can you send me a PM? Thanks a lot for your patience! mike

This is great!!! Bought it yesterday, had great expectations and they are not disappointed. Excellent ballad album, one of the top picks of the year. He develops some real depth here. If only the tickets for his upcoming Frankfurt concert were not sooo expensive - 50 EUROs for a decent seat!

Well ..... spinning her first disc now. A nice voice, typical blue-eyed soul. What annoys me a little is the use of drum machines on most tracks - the whole disc is a collabrorative effort between herself on voices, trumpet (not too spectatcular), keyboards etc. and Oliver Johnson, who plays keyboards, programs etc. I'd like to hear hear with a real band. Imagine a black singer and all the background tracks still would fit. Nice but do not expect too much. OTOH I like her straightahead singing style better than the over-sophisticated-Sarah-Vaughan-goes-soul outings of Rachelle Ferrell or Anita Baker ..... Give her time. I hoped for a voice that would move me as much as Laura Nyro. She should check her out.

Any date by the Kenny Clarke - Francy Boland Big Band or smaller sized ensemble will get my vote here.

It won't change behavior - you just watch out better so you're not getting caught next time. It does change educational behavior: If you have been beaten it is more likely you will beat your children because that was the role model.

Miles Davis Brad Mehldau Archie Shepp David Murray Freddie Hubbard Joe Zawinul Jaco Pastorius Michael Jackson They all deserve some praise, but I'm sick of hearing about them. But the last name in the list is a lot overpraised.

I stand corrected: Tom Lord has it right! Some Zawinul mystification. I probably mixed this up with some similar case - I am not sure I ever had that Zawinul on LP to try it out.

I think their customer service is not great. But the complete catalogue can be browsed online too: http://www.fantasyjazz.com/html/catalog_main.html ... and the whole catalogue is available for download as a pdf file on this page, just like I thought it should be. Since you have to look for LP issues at the bottom of each entry in the online catalogue the LPs might be easier to find in the pdf file using the search function.
