  1. Birthday present from a friend. Without knowing it he really hit the nail on the head, as Oscar Peterson was the first jazz artist I ever saw perform live, in Munich, must have been 1970. This new LP reissue sounds really great.
  2. Brooks is on the tracks with Timmons.
  3. Sides 1 & 2 are the original Blue Note LP. Next are the four bonus tracks of the first CD reissue. The five tracks that are new are listed as unissued in the Tom Lord Discogrsphy, not as rejected. That said, what I liked about the CD reissue was that the tracks with Brooks and Timmons were first, then the tracks with Hanna, who gets better sound from the bad upright piano at the Five Spot. This New issues is not in session order as far as I can see.
  4. Got the box set as a birthday gift from my wife. Sound is better than on the single CD reissues, clearer, more detailed. Will post some comments later.
  5. Bobby Timmons must have hated that piano. bad mechanics and out of tune. Roland Hanna had the better chops to cope with that machine. Contrary to Cuscuna's notes on this 1987 CD reissue, I do not think that ths is one of Burrell's best.
  6. I sse it that way, too. There were a few organists who referred to that pre-Smith sound, like Jackie Davis, and Wild Bill Davis just continued his way. I love that diversity. Smith was great, and one of a kind, but not the only great way of playing jazz organ.
  7. I agree, of course, I just wanted to post it for those who are looking for specific sessions. I ordered this one which will not be in the Mosaic boxes:
  8. Indeed! Not exactly background music. And the abundance of embellishments is almost too much.
  9. Starting with disc one, let me see how far I get today.
  10. Music by Gaetano Pugnani (1731-1798), Lorenzo Somis (1686-1763), Quirino Gasparini (1721-1778), Giovanni Battista Viotti (1755-1824). Orchestre des Pays de Savoie, dir. by Reinhard Goebel.
  11. Juat saw that the British ACE label still has a handful of Vanguard vreissues in their catalog: https://www.acerecords.co.uk/vanguard-label
  12. Charette was not the first with a solo organ album - there were Rhoda Scott and Jeff Palmer. But he's great!
  13. That's because her piano style is unique: Classical training, but absorbing whatever she heard and played in church as a child, then folk and jazz as she matured. She didn't care about categories or stylistics. She liked Ellington and Oscar Peterson, but never imitated anybody. Bach counterpoint and deep black people's music roots. A world of her own.
  14. I agree with Big Beat Steve. These albums were a mix of previously released tracks, alternates, and some unissued tracks. I think most were added to the CD reissues, but some may have been overlooked. A few albums still await reissue, like the Paul Horn Quartet album. One has a hard time trying to find out whether tracks already issued are alternates or edits.
  15. This series? https://www.discogs.com/label/92704-Jazz-West-Coast https://www.discogs.com/release/15930468-Various-Jazz-West-Coast-An-Anthology-Of-California-Music-/image/SW1hZ2U6NDg4MTYwNzQ=
  16. The story of Stan Getz's behaviour makes it nearly impossible for me to enjoy his music.
  17. If I hadn't bought these long ago I would consider asking for shipping to Europe. Two excellent box sets in good sound.
  18. Listening through all of Nina Simone's recordings in preparation of an evening with excerpts from her autobiography and audio and video for my friends later this month.
  19. R.I.P. He did some excellent discographical work. And he was a nice man.
