A bit early for April fools day ...... but intriguing idea.

Bird was a player who really improvised, conceived very different solos in each take. In that respect he was largely superior to his sidemen who often had to learn the tunes during the session. So all alternates merit listening, although he sometimes lost interest while the other were still finding their way through the tunes. I for one like both approaches to listening, just for Bird's incredible creativity, but listening to the music as the jazz world first got to hear it is hard to beat.

I enjoyed this one as an alternative to the complete sets, it covers the arly career including sideman dates in good remasterings. As I already had the Complete Savoy box on LP and all the Spotlite LPs including those with recordingd beyond the Dial label, it was a satisfying choice on CD. But I also have the two Ezzthetics discs.

Marcelle Meyer again - her Ravel is fantastic. She learned the music from Ravel's favourite pianist, Ricardo Vines.

This morning: Disc 1 with the concertos.

Stravinskij, Ravel, Debussy from this box. Meyer is the greatest as she never overplays the score.

I am in a process of inspecting and evaluating stuff stored in dozens of boxes on my shelves, and while dusting the CDs with British music it turned out the missing Pentangle CD was correctly filed with the band's other discs. Blind man ....

The person depicted on the upper cover is not him, btw, it is a distant relative from the Thuringian Bach branch, Johann Christan Bach, who was his student in Halle (not his half-brother).

One set could be all the sessions with Clare Fischer, Gary Foster, and Warne Marsh.

Saw her perform in a trio with Ralphe Armstrong and Sherman Ferguson (a real swinging drummer playing for the benefit of the trio). It was excellent. I liked her piano playing much more than on the records.
