  1. It didn't come across as cynical in the slightest just enquiring
  2. Me too. First time hooked I think she's great. I hadn't noticed the lack of recent releases but now you mention it. The duo with Alexander Hawkins is a good one. Maybe she's just keeping a low Covid profile. Now someone else who has really disappeared is Jason Adasiewicz. He was everywhere and to very good effect up to about 3/4 years ago, if not longer. Now nothing apart from a duo with Gustafsson
  3. I shou;d listen to 'Open, Coma' again. It's on my "to sell" list after a major cull of Berne titles
  4. Who else from Manchester should I be checking out, Halsall apart? Really enjoying this. I liked the cover photo so thought I'd give a spin No names I know. A bit more straight ahead than much of my listening to contemporary releases
  5. One trick pony but it's a good trick. Saw them live and after three tunes you could predict exactly what form the rest would take. Exciting though, for one sitting. Haven't bothered with the last couple of albums, maybe I'd be surprised Jazz Not Jazz? Not that that matters dreadfully
  6. Yep, considering a cull soon. No more room.
  7. Gordon Banks Pele Milton Nascimento
  8. Roswell Rudd w. Jamie Saft, Trevor Dunn, Balazs Pandi - Strength & Power [RareNoise UK, 2016]
  9. I'm surprised that folk are surprised by the tune selection. I think the clue's in the album's title, they've appeared for the first time in a major new market they're going to want to consolidate the enthusiasm by playing the favourites, surely. I'm also a fan of the opening drum solo.
  10. Back for the home straight... track 10. - like this quite a lot. Nice solos, percussion bubbling away under it all. Just a hint of going out there here and there. Works for me as you predicted it might. track 11. - Love it! nowhere near what I usually listen to and possibly couldn't listen to a lot of it but in this sized portion, yes please track 12. - Another nice surprise and something I could listen to again happily track 13. - so this is the Percy France who causes all the flutters. As an introduction I'm very pleased to meet him, great sound, very atmospheric# A strong finish for me. Well this has been an education, thank you. I realise how much of what I normally listen is removed from the fairly explicit Blues and Gospel influences I've heard throughout these selections, possibly not a surprise coming from a UK/European improv starting point...there's at least three tracks I'll be very interested in knowing more about and on the evidence of track 13 I wonder if there's a website somewhere dedicated to the saxophonist?
  11. Happens with me too, has been for a while but only on my phone not on my laptop.
  12. well I suspect this may be going out of my comfort zone but in the spirit of adventure let's jump in and see if I drown or not track 1. - leave out the alliterative interludes and it's a lot more listenable. Like the tenor track 2. - goes on too long but a nice groove track 3. - does nothing for me I'm afraid. May have been fun to be there track 4. - Like the guitar accompaniment from the off. Most enjoyable track so far for me, will be interested to hear who the guitarist is track 5. - This is interesting, not too sure about the electric bass but like like the electric piano and the rest is there for me. Swings nicely, foot tapping. Like the trombone a lot. Overall, could do with a bit more adventure. track 6. - something's drawing me in here a bit like track 5. I just want a bit more grit I think although the initial sax solo almost gets there a couple of times. The rhythm section sounds like they're sleeping under the trumpet solo, come on guys kick it up a bit. Another one that goes on too long. track.7 - Have I fallen into last month's BFT? The tenor player seems happier here than the rhythm section, once again I hear them dragging the horn back a bit. Nice guitar and I'm not often one to say that. I'll be interested to know who's on this. track 8. - yes, from the off. On the button. Loving the sound and a rhythm section that's awake and up for it. Best track so far for me. I want to hear more by this band, definitely track. 9. - Another good one that grooves just the way I like it. The drummer under the piano solo is on it. Great bari solo too. I want a sunny day to play this loud to - fat chance in London in January! And that's where I bow out for the day. I had no pretence to being able to identify anyone and that's been proven. An enjoyable listen and I'll try to be back for the rest tomorrow.
  13. I was very pleasantly surprised as Paradoxical Frog aside I've not got on with Kris Davis recordings. It's not Bud Powell though, quite moody...in a long, flowing, improvisatory way not in a RadioDrake way
  14. That made me laugh a lot more than it probably should have, thank you. I'm now going to have problems every time I reach for a Tchicai album...
  15. couldn't get enough of that when it was released, probably at least ten years since I played it now though. Just call me fickle
  16. Homophobic attacks on Disco and its adherents absolutely out in broad daylight in my experience too. This was mid-70s Home Counties, homophobia de riguer. Racism aimed at Disco, I don't remember and this was a very, very white existence where racism was sadly casual.
  17. Tony H told me no more than 6 weeks ago that new releases were due 2022
  18. Plenty of great Disco tunes and I'might suggest adding Players Association 'Disco Inferno' and The Whispers 'And The Beat Goes On' to that setlist. Music of my teens, loved lots of it. You beat me to it Detroit, Chicago, Berlin, London...
  19. But that's a whole year away!
  20. Thank you, John. This was a fascinating listen from the off. I have a few Steve Reid albums but not that one which will be remedied shortly. I enjoyed the Mangione enough to investigate further and shall also check out the early Pointer Sister albums. Harley is tremendous, I have the Atlantics and one other and loved this track As mentioned in the discussion, the Carpenters featured heavily in my childhood and that ID made me smile. Can't wait for your next BFT, when are you booked in for? 😃 A happy and peaceful New Year to you and your family. 2022 with more great music listening and discovery.
  21. This has been posted in another thread but I thought it might gain more attention here. Only available for the rest of today, 31/12.
  22. Nathan Davis with Georges Arvanitas Trio - Live In Paris, The ORTF recordings 1966-67 [Sam Records, France 2021 RP] Finally!
  23. He may just treat us again to his favourite... "sigh"
  24. thinking about @AllenLoweand hoping his recuperation is going well. He's great on this
