Looks intriguing. I will admit to having an irrational negative response to the way that Thurston Moore's suddenly seems to have become such an important figure in Brit improv. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big SY fan and respect his efforts in that field but I do wonder what merits his inclusion in something like this film. Sorry for that diversion - it's just a personal soap box I like to clamber atop whenever the opportunity presents itself

Any good? I like Eick's leader dates but at the same time have a sneaking doubt that a narrow furrow is being ploughed with them - danger of diminishing returns. I see there's a violinist added this time but the ECM site clip didn't really suggest there's a major departure in sound. I really like it; bit less "melodic" then "skala" but I can tell this will be a grower. I'm a big fan of Eick's albums on ECM though so you are getting a biased opinion I'm not adverse to a bit of bias. I'll call it informed opinion .......the 'little less "melodic"' probably makes it a 'yes' for me Have you seen him live at all? I've only done so with Haarla's 'Northbound' band, I keep missing Jaga Jazzist and I'm not sure he's played leader dates here yet. I'd like to hear him stretch out a bit on some of this ECM material

Look great but too tall for my standard CD shelves. They have to live elsewhere with Matchless, Ogun, Not Two, Okka.......maybe I should've had the shelves designed differently

An account put together from various Lacy interviews: The musicians were regular Lacy associates of the time, based in Rome. Enrico Rava's wife was from Argentina, and booked them a series of concerts at a theater in Buenos Aires. They bought one-way tickets, but hardly made any money in Argentina, and couldn't afford to get home for eight or nine months. "That was the wrong group at the wrong time in the wrong place playing the wrong kind of music...." He said that they did build up a small following over the months, but they were really glad to get out of Argentina. Thanks for unearthing those quotes. Seems extraordinary that they achieved excellent and well recorded session under those circumstances. That also explains for me why some early Rava leader sessions are recorded in Argentina. Davies/Newton/Wadud - I've Known Rivers [Gramavision] every time i play this I want to enjoy it more than I do. I always find it a bit studied and dry James Newton - Paseo Del Mar [india Navigation] much more like it. Vital and challenging. Same line up as above, except add Philip Wilson, although he doesn't play on all tracks. Maybe it's the Newton compositions that make the difference

I've just been enjoying Urbani's alto (and soprano) contributions to Giancarlo Schiaffini's Jazz A Confronto. It's the only time I've knowingly heard his playing. Anyone out there have any recommendations or views on other recordings? I'm tempted by his own leader date on Horo and the Rava on the same label

That's a shame. Too young. I'll admit that as a teenager Free meant Kossoff and Rodgers far more than Kirke and Fraser but at least I now know who wrote some of those great tunes

I have that Ganelin Trio somewhere. I must dig it out keeping with Strata East here. Cecil McBee - Mutima in the recent Wire McBee interview it mentions that the first track is McBee bowing across two amplified basses and manipulating the feedback from the amps. It is indeed an astonishing performance

This one hasn't survived the current trimming down of my collection. She's a fine player, but this set never really catches fire and things aren't helped by the thin, boxy recording and AkLaff's not very inspired drumming. I much prefer Bang's "Rainbow Gladiator". Just played it a second time. Keeper for me.
