  1. Billy Harper - Soran-Bushi B.H. [Denon]
  2. An account put together from various Lacy interviews: The musicians were regular Lacy associates of the time, based in Rome. Enrico Rava's wife was from Argentina, and booked them a series of concerts at a theater in Buenos Aires. They bought one-way tickets, but hardly made any money in Argentina, and couldn't afford to get home for eight or nine months. "That was the wrong group at the wrong time in the wrong place playing the wrong kind of music...." He said that they did build up a small following over the months, but they were really glad to get out of Argentina. Thanks for unearthing those quotes. Seems extraordinary that they achieved excellent and well recorded session under those circumstances. That also explains for me why some early Rava leader sessions are recorded in Argentina. Thanks Jeffcrom
  3. Davies/Newton/Wadud - I've Known Rivers [Gramavision] every time i play this I want to enjoy it more than I do. I always find it a bit studied and dry James Newton - Paseo Del Mar [india Navigation] much more like it. Vital and challenging. Same line up as above, except add Philip Wilson, although he doesn't play on all tracks. Maybe it's the Newton compositions that make the difference
  4. James Newton/Anthony Davis - Crystal Texts [Moers Music] the price sticker says "totally obscure late 70s free jazz" however I'm tempted to steal Clunky's "Elegant session" as a more accurate description
  5. Marshall Allen presents Sun Ra and his Arkestra - In the Orbit of Ra [strut/Art Yard] hoping this will open some doors into the wider Ra universe
  6. I've just been enjoying Urbani's alto (and soprano) contributions to Giancarlo Schiaffini's Jazz A Confronto. It's the only time I've knowingly heard his playing. Anyone out there have any recommendations or views on other recordings? I'm tempted by his own leader date on Horo and the Rava on the same label
  7. Giancarlo Schiaffini - Jazz A Confronto 5 [Horo]
  8. That's a shame. Too young. I'll admit that as a teenager Free meant Kossoff and Rodgers far more than Kirke and Fraser but at least I now know who wrote some of those great tunes
  9. I haven't ordered it.............................................................................................................................................................................yet
  10. I have that Ganelin Trio somewhere. I must dig it out keeping with Strata East here. Cecil McBee - Mutima in the recent Wire McBee interview it mentions that the first track is McBee bowing across two amplified basses and manipulating the feedback from the amps. It is indeed an astonishing performance
  11. Polar Bear - Same As You [Leaf] Pharoah Sanders- Live at the East [impulse] Pharoah Sanders - Izipho Zam (My Gifts) [strata East]
  12. Art Ensemble of Chicago - Message to Our Folks [bYG/Japan] Masterful followed by People in Sorrow [Nessa] more masterful

    Anthony Braxton

I enjoyed that. Thoughtful piece. Thanks for posting
  14. I was there. Remember the Tyner (with Gary Bartz?) a lot more than the Garrett

    Anthony Braxton

That's some line up. Wish I'd been there. In fact, I just wish I'd been aware of Braxton at that time
  16. This one hasn't survived the current trimming down of my collection. She's a fine player, but this set never really catches fire and things aren't helped by the thin, boxy recording and AkLaff's not very inspired drumming. I much prefer Bang's "Rainbow Gladiator". Just played it a second time. Keeper for me.
  17. O to be in Chicago.....I hope all of you that make it have a truly special evening. I can't see that you won't I wonder what the VIPs get for paying nearly three times general admission? To join in on stage perhaps?
  18. thanks. It'll be in my next order from the label the day the Matana solo disc is released. I don't know "Throw Down Your Hammer", maybe I should.
  19. Michelle Rosewoman - The Source [soul Note]
  20. Thanks. I think 'spoil' was my wrong choice really. There are some albums which just seem complete as they are on two sides of vinyl. The addition of extra music changes the listening experience inevitably. More isn't always better but I'll certainly take note that the extra material is worth hearing and will order accordingly
  21. Will do! Yes,a shame on two counts really. It would've been good to see NZ carry their run through to the final. It did all seem a bit of an anticlimax from this distance and as a neutral
  22. I have Oliv (CD) winging its way from Martin Davidson along with Monoceros. I have high expectations for both,! I don't think you'll be disappointed by Oliv. It's an extraordinary album. I'm torn as I love the LP version so much I'm unsure whether the extras on the CD will somehow spoil things. I know, I can't help it...... Monoceros, I must buy however
  23. There's a good Michelle Rosewoman leader date on Soul Note, 'The Source' with Baikida Carroll and Pheeroan Ak Laff. Mind you I've not listened to it in ages John Stevens - Spontaneous Music Ensemble [Polydor] aka Oliv.
  24. Always enjoy his contributions to Brass Fantasy
