  1. Thanks for posting that. It sounds like a wonderful concert. All I need is for them to now visit London......
  2. thanks. That's the band I last saw. Great
  3. Who is in the New Quartet? Is Jason Moran still there as I notice Gerald Clayton is on the the Wild Man dance recording
  4. time to bring back the Danelaw?
  5. Apart from Paragon and the Tuba trios, all of which need reissues there's The Quest [Red Records] Sizzle [impulse] and with Mario Schiano, Rendez-Vous [Vedette] No Cds as far as I'm aware Waves [Tomato] did get some kind of Cd issue but a while ago
  6. Curious about your thoughts when you get a chance to hear it to see if they match mine Shall do. Not released here for a few weeks. To be honest I ordered it as I'm intrigued by someone releasing a 3CD debut (surely hubris awaits) and the prerelease tracks sound good in a "lets throw lots of 'spiritual' jazz influences in the pot and stir hard with a few contemporary sounds". Whilst I'm not expecting anything groundbreaking the Brainfeeder/Flying Lotus connection might bring a different perspective. That it's a Ninja Tune is also a canny positioning - taking it out of the obvious Jazz circles and it may do well over here as 'Jazz for non-Jazz fans' What's his story? I agree about the ambitious nature made it intriguing for me also. I lucked into an advance of it. I think your expectations are grounded and will serve you well. Your final point really hits it on the head in my opinion. I feel with the push to non-Jazz fans will provide some hype that Jazz fans would not share. I think the praise Flying Lotus gives it is an extension of that thought process. Yes, that push to non-Jazz fans will almost inevitably result in a backlash from the keepers of the Jazz flame. Flying Lotus should listen a bit wider methinks Still, looking forward to hearing a new voice

  8. Horace Tapscott conducting the Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra - The Call [Nimbus]
  9. preorders in on Kamasi Washington - The Epic Jaga Jazzist - Starfire both Ninja Tune, both LA inspired so I'm led to believe. Sounds for the summer
  10. Thanks both
  11. I agree 100% percent re: Jones' "Hill Country Suite." It's a gem. Plus, how can you go wrong with a George Mraz & Freddie Waits rhythm section? I'd not known about Jones until this post. Just listened to some of "Country Hill Suite" online. Interesting listen. Anyone care to comment on the Cobblestone release "The Arrival of Bobby Jones"
  12. A nice way to start the day
  13. James Newton - Luella [Gramavision] There's at least one track on that record that reminds me of the Minutemen or Pere Ubu. Now that makes me want to hear it. If only for that one track
  14. Nice line up indeed. Douglas Ewart Ensemble, Karl Berger's Peace Church Suite and the Myers/Grimes duet stand out for me. But I'd be happy on any and every night. One year I will make it..........enjoy it those of you who are nearer
  15. Dansere for me. Great album. Such a finely tuned quartet - all their names should be on the cover
  16. Hellstrom is indeed a stunning album. for something completely different, and because we haven't had any flautists yet, I'd recommend James Newton's solo recordings
  17. Dewey Redman - Tarik [bYG] As much about Blackwell and Favors as Dewey. Nice
  18. Evan Parker.....take your pick
  19. I can't for the life of me remember why I chose not to go and see this preformed at the Barbican last year .......next time
  20. Enjoyed that. Order in for the new album
  21. I'm afraid to say, especially in this company, that I've not got on with a number of Anderson's discs. The very definite exception is "From The River To The Ocean" on Thrill Jockey. Definitely thrilling
  22. Looks intriguing. I will admit to having an irrational negative response to the way that Thurston Moore's suddenly seems to have become such an important figure in Brit improv. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big SY fan and respect his efforts in that field but I do wonder what merits his inclusion in something like this film. Sorry for that diversion - it's just a personal soap box I like to clamber atop whenever the opportunity presents itself
  23. Any good? I like Eick's leader dates but at the same time have a sneaking doubt that a narrow furrow is being ploughed with them - danger of diminishing returns. I see there's a violinist added this time but the ECM site clip didn't really suggest there's a major departure in sound. I really like it; bit less "melodic" then "skala" but I can tell this will be a grower. I'm a big fan of Eick's albums on ECM though so you are getting a biased opinion I'm not adverse to a bit of bias. I'll call it informed opinion .......the 'little less "melodic"' probably makes it a 'yes' for me Have you seen him live at all? I've only done so with Haarla's 'Northbound' band, I keep missing Jaga Jazzist and I'm not sure he's played leader dates here yet. I'd like to hear him stretch out a bit on some of this ECM material
