  1. Curious about your thoughts when you get a chance to hear it to see if they match mine Shall do. Not released here for a few weeks. To be honest I ordered it as I'm intrigued by someone releasing a 3CD debut (surely hubris awaits) and the prerelease tracks sound good in a "lets throw lots of 'spiritual' jazz influences in the pot and stir hard with a few contemporary sounds". Whilst I'm not expecting anything groundbreaking the Brainfeeder/Flying Lotus connection might bring a different perspective. That it's a Ninja Tune is also a canny positioning - taking it out of the obvious Jazz circles and it may do well over here as 'Jazz for non-Jazz fans' What's his story?
  2. Horace Tapscott conducting the Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra - The Call [Nimbus]
  3. preorders in on Kamasi Washington - The Epic Jaga Jazzist - Starfire both Ninja Tune, both LA inspired so I'm led to believe. Sounds for the summer
  4. Thanks both
  5. I agree 100% percent re: Jones' "Hill Country Suite." It's a gem. Plus, how can you go wrong with a George Mraz & Freddie Waits rhythm section? I'd not known about Jones until this post. Just listened to some of "Country Hill Suite" online. Interesting listen. Anyone care to comment on the Cobblestone release "The Arrival of Bobby Jones"
  6. A nice way to start the day
  7. James Newton - Luella [Gramavision] There's at least one track on that record that reminds me of the Minutemen or Pere Ubu. Now that makes me want to hear it. If only for that one track
  8. Nice line up indeed. Douglas Ewart Ensemble, Karl Berger's Peace Church Suite and the Myers/Grimes duet stand out for me. But I'd be happy on any and every night. One year I will make it..........enjoy it those of you who are nearer
  9. Dansere for me. Great album. Such a finely tuned quartet - all their names should be on the cover
  10. Hellstrom is indeed a stunning album. for something completely different, and because we haven't had any flautists yet, I'd recommend James Newton's solo recordings
  11. Dewey Redman - Tarik [bYG] As much about Blackwell and Favors as Dewey. Nice
  12. Evan Parker.....take your pick
  13. I can't for the life of me remember why I chose not to go and see this preformed at the Barbican last year .......next time
  14. Enjoyed that. Order in for the new album
  15. I'm afraid to say, especially in this company, that I've not got on with a number of Anderson's discs. The very definite exception is "From The River To The Ocean" on Thrill Jockey. Definitely thrilling
  16. Looks intriguing. I will admit to having an irrational negative response to the way that Thurston Moore's suddenly seems to have become such an important figure in Brit improv. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big SY fan and respect his efforts in that field but I do wonder what merits his inclusion in something like this film. Sorry for that diversion - it's just a personal soap box I like to clamber atop whenever the opportunity presents itself
  17. Any good? I like Eick's leader dates but at the same time have a sneaking doubt that a narrow furrow is being ploughed with them - danger of diminishing returns. I see there's a violinist added this time but the ECM site clip didn't really suggest there's a major departure in sound. I really like it; bit less "melodic" then "skala" but I can tell this will be a grower. I'm a big fan of Eick's albums on ECM though so you are getting a biased opinion I'm not adverse to a bit of bias. I'll call it informed opinion .......the 'little less "melodic"' probably makes it a 'yes' for me Have you seen him live at all? I've only done so with Haarla's 'Northbound' band, I keep missing Jaga Jazzist and I'm not sure he's played leader dates here yet. I'd like to hear him stretch out a bit on some of this ECM material

  19. Triple Point.....forget that then unless they initiate their "For Real Folk" imprint and price accordingly Dixon certainly wins 'Best Jazz Cardigan' Award on that Savoy. I'd love to have it legit - good suggestion colinmce

    Evan Parker

Look great but too tall for my standard CD shelves. They have to live elsewhere with Matchless, Ogun, Not Two, Okka.......maybe I should've had the shelves designed differently
  21. Ifa Y Xango Tentet - Twice Left Handed \\ Shavings [El Negocito Records]
  22. Billy Harper - Soran-Bushi B.H. [Denon]
  23. An account put together from various Lacy interviews: The musicians were regular Lacy associates of the time, based in Rome. Enrico Rava's wife was from Argentina, and booked them a series of concerts at a theater in Buenos Aires. They bought one-way tickets, but hardly made any money in Argentina, and couldn't afford to get home for eight or nine months. "That was the wrong group at the wrong time in the wrong place playing the wrong kind of music...." He said that they did build up a small following over the months, but they were really glad to get out of Argentina. Thanks for unearthing those quotes. Seems extraordinary that they achieved excellent and well recorded session under those circumstances. That also explains for me why some early Rava leader sessions are recorded in Argentina. Thanks Jeffcrom
