  1. Thanks for posting that. I had no idea of the existence of this band. I've just ordered a copy of the LP!
  2. To attend concerts I would have to take an expensive trip to Amsterdam on progressively more uncomfortable public transport. Amsterdam is an open sewer where rudeness and anti-social behaviour are the norm. Then I would have to part with even more money to listen to music in a room full of potentially annoying strangers. You'd have to pay me to go through such an ordeal. sounds like everyone might benefit from your choice
  3. I think the broadcast is set for 30/3 I agree that the first half shaded it. I thought they packed all the best tunes, the Strata East 'hits', in that first purely instrumental half - 'Efi', 'On the Nile', 'Soulfully I Love You'. The second half seemed a little less well-rehearsed to me but Carne's vocals were impressive (Mike Ladd's 'The Bottle' less so). Star for me, Charles Tolliver who seemed 'in charge' of the evening and played beautifully with such a cutting edge throughout the evening. They were all terrific exceeding my high expectations Great evening. Well done to Gilles Peterson for facilitating this. Tolliver said they'd be back - let's hope this is a continuing concern so others get to see this band
  4. Dyani, Temiz, Feza - Music for Xaba, vol.1 [sonet] next up, volume 2
  5. Hey Steve, the next time you're talking to them suggest a transatlantic visit will you? I'd love to see Stewart and Maneri in the same band. Oto awaits!
  6. Marc Levin Ensemble - Songs Dances & Prayers [sweet Dragon] Albert Mangelsdorff Quintett - One Tension [Amiga]
  7. I don't - will have to look that one up. Thanks for the rec. 'Window steps' is a lovely recording. No Kenny fan will be disappointed with it. I first heard Ottaviano on this Mingus tribute years ago (when I was on a Splasch Records run) http://www.discogs.com/Roberto-Ottaviano-Six-Mobiles-Mingus-Portrait-In-Six-Colours/release/6606414 I remember it as being very good and will have to dig it out again
  8. Xybert, the AH Ensemble albums are well worth a listen if you don't want the trio disc to feel lonely on the journey south
  9. With you there although I've never knowingly listened to any $500 good music
  10. The Human Arts Ensemble - Live vol.II [Circle Records] definitely less than $100 but well worth a listen nonetheless
  11. I super dig those early LPs from Minnesota. I only know the Hat with McPhee. Which other ones would you suggest checking out?
  12. Not favourites per se but I've just listened to these two.... Anthony Braxton - Three Compositions of New Jazz [Delmark] Anthony Braxton - this time....[bYG/Actuel] Both are marvellous statements that sound fresh today - I can't imagine what they must have sounded like on release
  13. This is a good read. http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/jan/22/inside-the-spacebomb-studio-with-natalie-prass-and-matthew-e-white There's been a real buzz over here in the music press about Spacebomb since that fist M.E.W. album. I think it's the best country soul I've heard since Lambchop knocked me sideways (there is probably lots more out there that I've not heard). I can't but think Curtis M has a lot of influence still in some unlikely places
  14. I've just been listening to the new one on Spotify. Glad to hear all that lush string sound is still there. I love the 'house' sound at Spacebomb so will have a listen to Natalie Prass too. No, I don't know the FTBB.
  15. Read the sequel to this to get a somewhat more balanced picture, if you will and if you care to ... but I'm not sure Steve's point is 'unbalanced'or requires balancing. I was struck by his and Impossible's posts (re: Flying Lotus, Kendrick Lamarr) that both widen things to think about how other contemporary and exploratory music in other genres can create a cross pollination for and of audiences.
  16. Big fan of the first Matthew E.Wright album. Yet to hear the new one but intrigued by the Letterman performance which seems more upbeat and 'rocky'
  17. Thank you Steve. That needed to be said and you did in your usual heat-seeking manner.
  18. John Handy - Recorded Live at the Monterey Jazz festival [CBS] I do like the sound of this group - exciting stuff,a proper live recording
  19. Thanks for that. It's been a long while since I bought the Wire. This gives me a good reason to check it out again
  20. Did Augmented Variations get a CD release do you know? I can only find dl Yes, I have it on CD. thanks. I'll search harder
  21. Did Augmented Variations get a CD release do you know? I can only find dl
  22. John Handy - Recorded Live at the Monterey Jazz festival [CBS] Harold Land - Damisi [Mainstream] Dyan/Feza/Temiz - Rejoice [Cadillac] a varied selection picked from one of those old fashioned things called record shops earlier today. Each of them has its merits
  23. thanks. I have the Mo'tet already and enjoy that I actually like it better than the Mo'tet date. I enjoy hearing Bobby Bradford doing somewhat straight ahead blowing. The sax player on the Mo'tet does a lot to spoil it for me. thanks Paul. I think i will investigate this one too - it is Bradford after all
