good price but a partial set that'll only mean having to source that missing disc

On that now. Always fond of a John Barleycorn - never fails to stir some longing for Olde England

yes, especially for new stock etc but in London Flashback Records have just opened a third store selling secondhand vinyl and CDs but also with a noticeably larger new vinyl stock. Sure they're riding the vinyl wave which may well not last and their new shop's in Hipster Central but they do seem to have a model that's working now and has worked for over 20 years so far

The rest of the album's rather good too. Spotify on a Renbourn Group loop at the moment There is just so much music out there to hear.......must get out of my jazz/improv bunker more often

Bev, thank you. That is one of the most marvellous tracks I've heard for a very long time RIP indeed

Really like the work of Diebenkorn. that's there. Oddly that repro makes a greater three dimensional impact than the original did on the wall. Also I've just realised, by checking the catalogue, that it's 24 years since the Whitechapel....how time flies when you're having fun -

Diebenkorn at the RA in London. Sumptuous Not often I come away wishing the show was larger. Just three rooms. I'd been waiting nearly 20 years since the Whitechapel exhibition that introduced me to his work - it was great to be in a room with his work again -

Digression thread: Coherence is overrated
mjazzg replied to AllenLowe's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well done NZ. It was exciting enough listening on the radio from the other end of the planet. Heaven only knows what Eden Gardens must've been like. SA choke again! Now all we need is for the Black Caps to beat Aussie in the final. Come on NZ! edit to add: the less said about England's woeful and shameful 'appearance' the better Cheers man. I've seen NZ choke in that situation so many times and as the game went on i was getting more and more of a sinking feeling. The whole country is buzzing today, it's amazing how for better or worse a sporting event can affect the mood of a nation. My mum's partner used to be a stock broker and he said business was always affected the following week depending on whether the All Blacks won or lost. And yes, condolences about England. The current kiwi team is probably the best one day side we've ever fielded but we are well used to poor performances in previous years. I'm glad everyone's enjoying it so much I am of course hoping for a reversal of England/NZ fortunes come the Rugby World Cup Ha ha, ya never know! England are tough to beat, especially at home. And the ABs in the Rugby world cup have given us many classic examples of choking unfortunately. Almost always go in as favourites, have only won twice, both times at home. When we got knocked out by France in the cup before last, the scenes at work on the following monday were pretty hilarious actually. It was seriously like someone had died. I suspect home advantage is our only hope.....but hope we can. Let's start a thread (of two) come September -

Ornette Coleman - Beauty is a Rare Thing (2015)

Impulse buys - good all round! they all failed my 'do I have it on CD?' test which I reluctantly impose on myself occasionally..... Nice thick sleeves too on those originals. Enjoy them. -

That sounds very tough, sorry to hear that. I can empathise to a degree as I have a chronic health condition that also restricts my activity levels on a daily basis but not so much my Jazz purchasing levels (despite the consequent part-time salary) Hey, it's JHR list day -

That's just about the (also reputedly nasty) London experience too. Different strokes I guess but nothing better than great music in a friendly environment. Beats sitting at home with the best recorded music more times than not. The community (even of strangers) of the shared experience certainly works for me -

Thanks for posting that. I had no idea of the existence of this band. I've just ordered a copy of the LP! -

To attend concerts I would have to take an expensive trip to Amsterdam on progressively more uncomfortable public transport. Amsterdam is an open sewer where rudeness and anti-social behaviour are the norm. Then I would have to part with even more money to listen to music in a room full of potentially annoying strangers. You'd have to pay me to go through such an ordeal. sounds like everyone might benefit from your choice -
Strata-East show coming up at the Barbican, London
mjazzg replied to sidewinder's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I think the broadcast is set for 30/3 I agree that the first half shaded it. I thought they packed all the best tunes, the Strata East 'hits', in that first purely instrumental half - 'Efi', 'On the Nile', 'Soulfully I Love You'. The second half seemed a little less well-rehearsed to me but Carne's vocals were impressive (Mike Ladd's 'The Bottle' less so). Star for me, Charles Tolliver who seemed 'in charge' of the evening and played beautifully with such a cutting edge throughout the evening. They were all terrific exceeding my high expectations Great evening. Well done to Gilles Peterson for facilitating this. Tolliver said they'd be back - let's hope this is a continuing concern so others get to see this band -
