  1. and now....today's other arrival Ornette Coleman - Love Call just leaps right out of the speakers from the off. sounding such much fuller than the CD
  2. Glad you are enjoying it! I am again right now! interesting to hear the first side is more 'inside' than I'd imagined ths combination producing and then you flip and get what i was expecting. That's not to say Side 1 isn't anything but great playing
  3. So would I. Looks great
  4. Sam Rivers & Mario Schiano - Rendez-vous [Vedette/Red Records] thanks to Leeway for posting this a while back and alerting me to its existence. Copy duly chased down and it's a great listen
  5. I'm tempted to say that the Daily Telegraph is written precisely for "decrepid moldy-figs" but don't want to offend any of its readers here

    Evan Parker

Nope! Was outbid the few times I've seen it on eBay:( If neither of you have it it must be RARE indeed
  7. Charlie Haden - Closeness [Horizon/A&M]
  8. some previous discussion in this thread
  9. Ted Curson Quartet - Tears for Dolphy [Fontana] to celebrate ordering a copy of 'Urge'
  10. I was dubious about this and prepared to punt it to someone else, but it's actually very good. Thanks Clifford, that makes me feel a bit better about my punt (different meaning over here) on it as I await it's arrival from Portugal. There's always that dread of the 'arranged marriage' ending in tears

    Evan Parker

I think that maybe the intensity has changed rather than waned. I'm with you on the development of the playing but hear an intensity now more centred in economy of expresion with a measured depth replacing the fiery outburst of old (which he still sometimes pulls out) something most noticeable in his tenor playing which now has a majesty unequalled elsewhere I think. The last two visits of Schlippenbach Trio have been some of the most intense playing I've ever heard. "The brilliance remains" - couldn't have put it better myself, Steve

    Evan Parker

Absolutely with you on those ECM trios And for a recent release I might suggest John Escreet Trio + Evan Parker 'Sound, Space and Structures'. I can see this list getting very long and erwbol getting very poor.....listening now to Whitstable Solos on Psi the most recent solo release I think and a lot more available than some of the older ones
  13. Allen/Haden/Motian - In the Year of the Dragon [JMT]
  14. Is that a sub-genre? Of posts, perhaps
  15. Arthur Jones - Scorpio [bYG Actuel]
  16. I've orderd the Pharoah & Underground LP not without a little trepidation but I'm relying on Mazurek's usual high standard quality control. There's some nice footage of the band at Saalfalden on youtube
  17. A fabulous goal to end an enthralling match and a very good tournament. Well played Germany. The best team in the tournament prevails
  18. So might Howedes - big miss
  19. Nice one, I suspect. One day I'll get a copy I hope
  20. Old and New Dreams - Old and New Dreams [ECM} the version of 'Lonely Woman' is one of the best with a bass solo that says it all so eloquently

    Steve Lehman?

I've listened just three times and as yet it hasn't knocked TT&F off its pedestal yet. TT&F and the live experience of the Octtet playing it has been one of the musical highlights of the last few years. My first impressions of Mise are that it sounds somewhat too similar to TT&F except, and it's a big except, for the tracks with significant electronics - these are just the sort of development I was hoping Lehman would make to his 'signature' sound. Having said this, the playing and composing on Mise are top notch. I still hear a slice of Steve Coleman in the compositions and don't quite get the 'originality' tag that was so heavily applied to TT&F' sound (and by inference to thie release) - this is in no way a criticism of Lehman who I believe has developed a very interesting sound and compositional approach I just don't think it came out of nowhere (not something I've ever heard Lehman claim but many critics seemed to) I'm hoping that as I spend more time with Mise (starting right now) it will reveal to me what it's revealed to you Xybert
  22. All geared up to see them headline Reading Festival in 1979 and they cancelled (replaced by Nils Lofgren of all people). Never saw them live and the records faded pretty quickly from my attention but for a while they soundtracked some teenage angst
  23. It's good to hear these personal tributes, from those that met him, today. They reinforce what I'd hoped was the case from the distance of a fan
  24. Rickie Lee Jones - Pop Pop [Geffen] Charlie putting his stamp on yet another album
  25. Marion Brown - Recollections: Ballads and Blues for Alto saxophone [Creative Works]
