What live music are you going to see tonight?
mjazzg replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Evan Parker and The Necks at Cafe Oto in a couple of hours I can't wait to see how this works. I find the Necks music completely enthralling and they seem so self-contained that I'm not surprised they don't usually collaborate....we'll see I may make wednesday's AMM and EP which will make an interesting contrast Because they were behind you? -
Jone Takamaki Trio - Universal Mind [Arc Light Editions] nicely done reissue. Great music

Welcome to the board, HB Elroy. I came over from AAJ a few years back and haven't missed it (tbh I got fed up with all the linked AAJ reviews, often by just one person - it seemed to have become just plugging the main site in so many threads). I recognise the ID's in Niels post from some time back and it would be good to see them over here.

CREPUSCULE W/ NELLIE
mjazzg replied to Joe's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Looking forward to reading this. Any European distribution in the pipeline? I suspect not but no harm is asking -
Hey Leeway, belated birthday congratulations. I trust the chocolate cake was good........

I've been digging this album too. At this stage it still loses me a bit in the second half leading up to the excellent Really OK. More spins required etc. An excellent album, i'm still knocked out by Chris Speed here, his playing adds the perfect amount of bite. Ordered my copy today in no small part due to the discussions of it on the board. When I read "Halvorson" and "Giuffre" in the same sentence it became a 'must buy' I've also just realised how much I like the cover design....a small bonus. Now all I need is for the good people at Relative Pitch to get it in the post quickly so I can join in the discussions

What makes for a great box set?
mjazzg replied to LouisvillePrez's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
not too many discs -
I listened to it last night. It's very sparse and introspective overall, going to take some concentrated listening... I preferred Koan to Oblique so that whets my appetite to hear it's sparse

I thought about grabbing that from Alan's list but I had other priorities (non-record-related). Assume you got it there? Looks like a great record. No, not from Alan so he may still have it. Very good indeed. You wouldn't be disappointed if you like the two musicians as I suspect you do. It's high intensity playing that somehow creates an almost graceful calm in places

New Tyshawn Sorey on Pi Recordings "On Alloy, Sorey takes on the jazz piano trio tradition as exemplified by Bill Evans, Paul Bley and Andrew Hill, in addition to contemporary artists such as Craig Taborn, Jason Moran and Vijay Iyer and extends the continuum to include compositional influences from classical music such as Morton Feldman, Claude Debussy and Frédéric Chopin." no ambition there, then?

Louis Moholo & Keith Tippett - No Gossip [FMP] Torrents of ideas shared. Astonishing performance by both.

Great read Leeway, thanks. Good to see Berne spreading his wings across a residency like this.
-
Good to hear. Wish he played vibes on it

Music's good too....another from that list?

Yes, so do I. Recent purchase. Always liked the trio and the addition of Williams just seemed a good fit. Would love to see them live

The Scorch Trio & Mars Wiliams - Made in Norway [Rune Grammofon]
-
Having realised they were limited - the two Audio One releases "The Midwest School" and "An International Report" from Vandermark and cohorts. Also, Scorch Trio & Mars Williams - Made in Norway [Rune Gramofon]- wanted some more Williams and thought this could be a winning combination
-
The Grip - Celebrate [slowfoot] Finn Peters (as, fl); Oren Marshall (tba); Tom Skinner (d) the influence is there in the band name and instrumental line up. the music is very good
-
I thought "The Age of Wonder" a gripping read throughout. Marvellous book. I'm reading something very different now James Baldwin - Tell Me How Long The Train's Been Gone
-
Alan Shorter - Parabolic [Verve] thanks to the new Alan Shorter thread

Damn! I need that! Sound samples sound good......... Amazon.uk aren't stocking it... does anyone have a UK/Europe site where it can be ordered? Intakts do normally find their way eventually onto Amazon.Uk I find. No other source locally that I've found for the label though. Have InstantJazz got it? Always worth a look

Prevost quite often plays the hell out of drums in London. In fact I'd reckon he plays as often these days in the more "Jazz" style in trios, quartets etc (ref. 'remarkable saxophonists') than AMM perform together. His Quartet (with Tom Chant) releases on Matchless have I always thought illustrated this side of his playing in contrast to AMM. I've seen Vandermark with Tilbury and Wachsmann where Tilbury played very un-AMM music too. Check out his trio with Edwards and Sanders for a 'louder' Tilbury. It may well be that the KV trio with Prevost and Tilbury isn't so much AMM + Ken but a far less minimal meeting. On the other hand it could well be the former - and that, I guess, is the joy of following consumate musicians like these
