  1. Please where can I order a vinyl copy ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_Fools'_Day
  2. I agree, England going forward were unrecognisable from previous tournament teams - great to see an Italina defence rattled. There was some shakines in defenece but only really on the left as they really should have solved the problem with the Italian right wing/wing back combination a lot earlier. Italy just had more options and looked a far more cohesive unit. Still all to play for in the next two games - win both and we're through. Uruguay were poor against Costa Rica and on that form should pose no problem (especially if Suarez isn't 100%). I just know these words will come back to haunt me on Friday morning.....
  3. Well played Costa Rica. Come on England!
  4. Another nice review, thanks. I wish i'd seen the East/West set, sounds fascinating and anything that has vocals that "found the space between Irene Aebi and Philip Glass’s operatic singing" has got to be worth a listen
  5. Superb Dutch performance against a dismal Spain
  6. Thanks for the review, Leeway - nicely detailed and gives a good feel for the evening in an even-handed way. I look forwad to other reports from the front row (or as close as you get) so i can follow the festival from a distance.
  7. The draw is seeded to avoid too many top teams having to fight it out in one group and therefore losing teams to the competition to early when they don't qualify from the group (top two qualify from each grup into knockout round). The First names in each group came from the same pot in the drawer and so on through the group places. Seeding was based on the FIFA World rankings. I'm looking forward to seeing how England's current crop make amends for our disturbingly inept performance four years ago. I'd like to see them get out of the group but fear that Uruguay and Italy may prevent it. Overall it'll be interesting to see if Spain can retain the trophy - it will be a first for a European team outside Europe if they do. Argentina should be good to watch and the Germans could impress. A wild card is Belgium with a fine crop of young players. But really I suspect it's the host's to lose.
  8. It's on UK Spotify too. I can hear why people rate it. It's scarcity has probably inflated the esteem in which it's held but it's a very nice session indeed. Wonderfully of its time
  9. Thanks for the alert. I'm listening to it now. Interesting to finally hear such a talked about session
  10. Jack Dejohnette feat. Lseter Bowie - Zebra [MCA] coincidental Bowie playing....I like to think that this session is a long lost antecednet of Chicago Underground Duo. They don't even sound similar but something about the beats/synths and trumpet. Love Lester's playing on this and although Dejohnette's instrumentation sounds dated there's something quite appealing there
  11. I agree with CT, nice choices. 'Spirituals' is a favourite too
  12. Lester Bowie - The 5th Power [black Saint]
  13. You know, it occurs to me that LP2 of "All the Magic!" is Bowie doing solo trumpet, but using overdubs and some extended techniques, to get various effects Quite marvelous and truly avant. It would make a happy comparison with the Wooley LP. I've seen Nate do that solo amplified trumpet a number of times, never fails to awe, real virtuoso stuff. Funnily Wooley's playing on Malus called Bowie to my mind. He plays with a very open brassiness that I've not really heard him use elsewhere and because of the the trio setting his playing is very prominent. I was checking the price of copies of 'All the Magic' after listening to the Wooley and after it's recent postings here
  14. first spin for Malus - Wooley/Corsano/Antunes [No Business]
  15. I'd love to hear that and even better get my hands on a copy. Been waiting a while for one to turn up that's in half decent condition I'll make do with ......Pierre Favre Quartett [Wergo]
  16. More Laubrock with usual suspects plus some of her old London usual suspects http://www.intaktrec.ch/221-a.htm
  17. score draw with Germany winning on penalties....gratuitous Football reference, apologies but the World Cup looms (as does another England competition of despair)
  18. I'd feel the same. Carpe diem. The album you don't get is the one you often spend a lot of time regretting, right? Great group, Bailey and Stevens to me are the Fountainheads, and there is Mr. Watts too . Yes Watts is there and sounding fine despite no mention in the sleeve notes
  19. Spontaneous Music Ensemble - 'So What Do You Think?' [Tangent] finally found a relatively reasonably priced copy, in nice condition, so went for it. No regrets
  20. Have you tried ordering direct from Guy/Homburger through their website? Very friendly and efficient service but I can't speak to the $ cost not overly cheap in £ Intakts are $25+ here in the UK unless you catch them early at Amazon where a bargain can be found Ubu - I looked up Wichihalder after the gig and yes, there's a quartet with Schweizer which I think I'll investigate http://www.discogs.com/artist/2444390-Jürg-Wickihalder-European-Quartet
  21. I've seen him a few times. Los Cubanos Postizos were great fun and I'm sure to anyone versed in Cuban music probably displayed all manner of deficiency but they could really play what they were playing, Ribot included. With Grimes and Taylor he played a gamut of guitar styles, some of which I enjoyed more than others (hated the singing). In Zorn's Electric Masada he hit the Jewish surf aeschetic square on and again impressed and also managed to shine in the more chamberish Bar Kokhba ensemble. But the best experience was an improvised trio with Han Bennink and Evan Parker - company I didn't expect him to keep and I wondered how he'd hold up - he did by using all his eclecticism and creativity. I run from Ceramic Dog as far as I can and I've not really been convinced by some of the film music work he's releaseed on Tzadik. Sometimes I think of him as creative and ranging across genre and boundaries in an inventive way but others I just wonder whether he spreads himself too thin. But that's more about me than him. As Allen says above whatever he does is recognisable as him nad often its the context reather than his playing that I don't find convincing. I think my musical life would be poorer but not empty without his playing and recording
  22. Johansson was a star at Oto too. I was also as impressed with Wickihalder's alto as you were. The Parker/Lytton/Guy trio burned bright in London as well Interesting to see the mix of solos, trios, quartets being similar but with different personnel If I could write about music as clearly as you Ubu i'd post my review but I'll leave it to you.... Absolutely meant the collective 'we' no individual target, at all. It was just a throwaway that reflected a thought that we'll probably never know what actually transpired in detail. I'm now guilty of refocussing the thread again....oops....(and if my emoticons hadn't mysteriously been disabled apparently by dling Firefiox there'd be a big smiley here now)
  23. Can't imagine Oto folks ever playing hardball. they don't need to and they have always been the most amenable in communications I've had with them. Sounds like Trevor Watts just decided to make his stand - fair enough but it does seem to say 'prima donna' a little bit I'm not sure Guy should have to step in - he's probably spent weeks organising the residency and then one of many internationally renowned musicians makes a stand, why should he spend extra effort massaging an ego? sadly the proof was in the music on the night - Trevor Watts wasn't missed one iota. His decision to pull out, I hope the face he feels he's saved was worth it. The Barry Guy New Orchestra proved they're were bigger than one musician - that's not a criticism of Watts' stance just the truth as I heard it Are we making too much ofthis? Just wondering.....
  24. Baritone is Per Texas Johannsonn. Or it was in London enjoy!
  25. I'm still intrigued to know the source of the Watts 'alleged'hissy fit. As I'd a ticket I'd not looked at the Oto website in days so hadn't seen any announcement but was told by a fellow audience member he was unavailable, no reason was circulating on the night that I heard. I can imagine there's many different reasons why Gustaffson wasn't available - hell, he travels so much I'm surprised he's the energy to fulfil half the commitments he does. I'm not worrying about Tarfala yet, Steve
