Celebrating Ornette, Painted Bride, Philadelphia, March 21, 2014
mjazzg replied to Leeway's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Sounds like a really interesting evening. "But the masterstroke on Tacuma's part, he arranged to bring in Asha Puthli, who sang, "What Reason Could I Give" on Ornette's "Science Fiction" session in 1971, and sang it again that night. It was a goose-bump moment" I am very envious of this bit in particular. Can't believe how poignant that must have been to witness. Nice to hear that Wolfgang Puschnig, a name I've not heard for a while, is still cutting the mustard -
Bob Moses - When Elephants Dream of Music [Gramavision] it must be more than ten years since I last played this one. I now wish I hadn't ignored it for so long. Strong music

Lucky you! I'd love to hear this band live. Count me as a Halvorsen believer too. She's played London a few times now and in each context she's brought a keen improvisor's ear to the proceedings. I'm generally no great fan of guitarists but I do love how she channels her influences into a unique (not so) new voice on the instrument. Her ensemble recordings also display a talent for writing. Please send Thumbscrew and the Quintet over the pond to us sometime.

Thank you! The CD arrive for me yesterday and i thought i'd comment in a FWIW kind of way that this label really offers good value in terms of the physical product: a decent quality digipak for only 12 EUR including international shipping is a steal for me. I'd add that on the first couple of listens I'm finding this an enjoyable set. For me the rhythm section seems key (unsurprising with Hollenback on board) and it's good to here Blaser 'pushed' to play with such strong rhythm. He still plays those long extended notes occasionally and plays behind the beat a fair bit. But this is the first time I've heard him open up and play 'hot' and whilst he's not Roswell Rudd (who is?) it's interesting to hear in comparison to previous discs. My initial impression is that the album sounds not disimilar to a Henri Texier date - which is a good thing indeed, in this household

I like that one a lot and was initially taken aback by the 'formal' nature. It led me to the Bill Smith leader dates which I also enjoy. Would love to track down their release with McPhee but it proves elusive

Do cartoon-ish covers promise great experimental music? Seem to, witness these two (and others). I'm hoping that Obamacare provides me with a "Beak Doctor," since other efforts have been fruitless. And has Joe McPhee produced any better albums than his HatART albums? Good question. I hadn't spotted that connection . Yes, The McPhee Hats that I've heard are all very strong. I followed 'Rotation' with 'The Willisau Concert'. We don't get Beak Doctors on our National Health Service either maybe because it is really only really a Socialist Conspiracy to keep us all in good health without having to pay too much. I bet our compatriots who 'go private' for their healthcare get a choice of Beak Doctors. (oops straying into 'political', will stop there) Here's hoping Obamacare comes up trumps for you

Zbigniew Namyslowski: Winobranie Label: Muza SX 0952 great fun this one possibly because of, rather than despite, its stylistic variety

Evan Parker/Greg Goodman - Abracadabra [The Beak Doctor] and now Joe McPhee - Rotation [Hat hut]

New Graham Collier release. Luminosity - the Last Suites
mjazzg replied to mjazzg's topic in New Releases
Oops...appears that we've got two threads on this release. I think I'm the guilty party for starting this one without checking Mod (not Weller) can you merge please? -
is anyone a Tricentric foundation subscriber? I'm interested in getting hold of a subscriber-only downloads of some London concerts I attended. Has anyone already dl'd them as I'd be interested to know what the quality's like. Mind you I'm not sure they'll be worth the annual subscription

Another Malaby agnostic here. I recognise what Larry Kart says about abrupt ecstasy and I hear a "detachment" between technique and feeling. The two recordings I've owned, Tamarindo and Voladores I sold on. Sadly I'm going to miss a very rare London apperance which i would have loved to experienece to see how the 'live' compared to 'recorded'.

Andrew Hill, Point of Departure - 50 years ago ago
mjazzg replied to Guy Berger's topic in Recommendations
Enjoyed the Hill/Shepp too. I also saw a big band at QEH and best of all the band with Greg Osby at the Jazz Cafe I remember that Tower Records in Piccadilly had a huge repro of 'Point of Departure' cover behind the counter - I always wanted that. Great album, my favourite until I heard Compulsion in the Mosaic box -
Luminosity-The Last Suites a double CD, seems to be available at a very reasonable price here http://www.grahamcolliermusic.com/ http://www.grahamcolliermusic.com/TheStore/TheStore.html

listening to the Roebke for the first time - first impressions positive. It sounds just like you'd expect this line-up to sound (which for me is fine). Respect for the past but making music that's definitely now. somewhat like Berman, Stein, Rede in fact all of them seem to have achieved on their own recordings. I'm very impressed by most everything this generation of Chicago players are putting out

Nice one! With Gary Peacock and Masabumi Kikuchi...have not played this in years..have always loved the cover. yes, lovely cover. Music is marvellous. The fact that itwas Peacock and Kikuchi was one of the main deciders for purchase. I just wish I could read the Japanese insert notes

and now Hozan Yamamoto - Ginkai [Phillips]

Art Ensemble of Chicago - Chi Congo [Paula Records] preceded by

Steve Lacy - Wordless [Musica Records] I like this one a lot

If memory serves that's a painting by an american named Kenneth Noland. It took me a few years to warm to Lacy myself but now I have almost everything he's done! Try "the window" or "morning joy" too as starting points. Thanks. I'll go to them next
