Joe McPhee - Nation Time: The Complete Recordings
mjazzg replied to colinmce's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
What to do? Already have the albums so is it worth it for the live material and extra Vassar tracks - this weekend's conundrum I suspect so -

Response from C vs D "Nation Time and Black Magic Man are mastered from tape. We returned to the original source tapes to remaster Black Magic Man; Nation Time is the same mix and master as the Unheard Music Series reissue" -
Wadada Leo Smith - Ten Freedom Summers
mjazzg replied to Blue Train's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I'll be there for at least one night - ticket booked. Considering doing the whole thing if life allows -
with a BIG thank you to the current West Coast thread that prompted this purchase. Love Higgins on this.

Completely forgot about those. Have had access to the original vinyl and made copies. Now, I will have to order them as well. It's like when Atvastic started reissuing FMP releases before FMP imploded, or whatever the real story about what happened. You mean beside directly from C vs D? . The earlier C vs D reissues were noticeably needle drops anyway so you've beaten them to it Blue Train -
The "everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band" quote attributed to Brian Eno about the first VU album has been wheeled out a few times today Velvet Undreground Live 1969 was the album that did it for me....thanks Lou

so this made me dig the LP out. Moncur solos on 'Blue and Green' and also on 'I wished on the moon' and not surprisingly on 'Love and Hate' where he is also featured heavily in the accompaniment. Duets with Bourelly for a few bars on 'I am waiting' Elsewhere little to be heard but here and there in some ensemble playing. Good to reacquaint myself with the first Cassandra LP that i heard and started an appreciation that still endures 27 (!!) years later

Another late comer with Sam Rivers in about 1997 and very soon after that the big Andrew Hill. Only Selects since then

It's certainly an album to own. I don't have enough knowledge of Bailey to comment on how it rates in his overall catalogue. I would say however that it's a fine example of three musicians sharing the music-making and the credit for some amazing music. It's definitely the Parker, Bailey, Bennink album to own

This was the way too perfect song for the Breaking Bad soundtrack (series 4. as far as I've got) - they must've laughed out loud when they thought of it. I did when I was watching the sequence Crystal Blue Persuasion indeed! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C74HhoRuFEs&feature=player_detailpage apologies, several attempts to embed clip failed

ECM economy-run issues - for other markets?
mjazzg replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I love late Lloyd and while it is weird to hear him cover standards and 'pop' tunes the fleet and fast passagework is, as ever, a delight. And Moran is no slouch! That's good to hear. Somehow it slipped by me. I'm with you on late Lloyd and may have to redress the situation forthwith - maybe I'll get an even slimmer version.... I'll do an 18 kbs for you if you ask kindly that would have to be either Lloyd or Moran solo, no? -
Remember not to sell discs you might want later
mjazzg replied to David Ayers's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I flogged my Deep Purples and kept my Family LPs. I probably bought some acheingly hip 80s indie guitar band with the money which I then sold to buy Jazz in the 90s. And so it has always been, a recycling of significant numbers to fund the next acquisistions - I must have sold hundreds. I'd hate to think how many I'd have if I'd kept everything (there were at least 5 Rush LPs ffs). One day I may compile my shadow collection of the departed and see how many I regret on musical rather than nostalgia grounds. -

Last art exhibition you visited?

Mira Schendel at Tate Modern. Revelatory. Tate Modern's on a good run of shows of artists the have had less exposure in UK at the moment. Saloua Raouda Choucair and Ibrahim El-Salahi were both very enjoyable. A nice balance to the blockbusters, currently Klee -

Nicely sums up what I'm enjoying about it, thanks Colinmce for allowing me to be lazy. More Noriega would be grand but overall a very strong release indeed.

I'm a fan of her abrasive style but still went through a saturation period myself recently - the danger of over-recording/exposure perhaps? That's hardly her fault as I'm the one choosing to listen to it all in the end.... I find her playing on the recent Septet date is less abrasive and therefore you may enjoy it more. Certainly the date as a whole comes across to me as focussing more on melody and the arrangements for the enlarged horn presence

I'm curious, where did you manage to buy this cd? I see 3 on the For Tune website I'd like to get. Thanks, c I've purchased directly from the label with success. Also, this Polish store is quick and efficent (at least within Europe) http://www.multikulti.com/
