  1. Thoroughly enjoyed this programme about someone I knew absolutely nothing. A nice insight into the keeping alive of the tradition (is that 'conservative? ) and at the same time adding to it with original contributions. Another sale of Penguin Eggs imminent.
  2. I bought one Heavenly Sweetness and whilst it didn't sound quite as full as the equivalent Liberty pressing it sounded good enough for non-audiophile listening. A good and reasonable source for these reissues has been Honest Jons http://www.honestjons.com/shop.php earlier discussion about them here
  3. I didn't realise there was a book. It was/is a very good exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery where I obviously didn't visit the shop on the way out
  4. and now I want to know why I didn't get my email from Babel .....off to sulk in the corner thanks to CraigP I'll be checking it out too
  5. Today's the official release date. Two listens in and I think this is just great. The enhanced band brings a real depth to the sound which really works for me. It's definitely a development from the quintet albums with some interesting writing for the bigger band with a brassier overall sound. Maybe some may feel it's trading spikiness for melody but I simply hear good writing, great playing and an interesting step forward for Ms Halvorson. This is going to played a lot
  6. what evidence for Iyer's amateur status? Seems to me he earns a living from his music wich puts him in mind on the professional side of the line. Maybe your use of 'amateur' was perjorative in which case why not back it up with some evidence (not opinion) rather than leave it hanging there
  7. Thanks for the tip off, count me in as interested. Any solo gigs to promote it planned? also, how imminent is the next AH Ensemble disc?
  8. Jeez.. Double Jeez. My favourite box ever at a marvellous price = enjoy long and deep
  9. interesting indeed. I've not caught up with Yells for a few releases. I'm a big fan of Gonzalez but less so of that band. I'd like to hear the Evans/Parker as maybe it'll be the one where I finally 'get' Evans who I find is someone who's undoubted technique gets in the way of my enjoyment of most of what I've already heard (exception the live MOPDTK)
  10. that's a great photo. I've had the pleasure of witnessing many of his performances and this photo does much to encapsulate them - thanks for posting I hope those that make it to The Stone enjoy what looks like an astonishing residency
  11. this sounds great. Eisenstadt's always interesting to me even if I don't warm to all of his ventures.
  12. except mine's the Mono. Found this and Bley's Touching from the same series in a nice old fashioned record shop this week
  13. very much looking forward to finding it somewhere where the postage cost isn't such an issue. Problem is I'm not sure how much sdistribution Mr Rudolph gets to Europe
  14. Would love to hear it. Nothing about 'too obscure' or not being ready (give me a break on that - how do I prove my readiness? who do I apply to for the badge?). Simple - too expensive. When the spare's there then I'll be sharing your enthusiasm.
  15. New Matana Roberts on the way. Second Chapter of Coin Coin.http://cstrecords.com/cst098/ I am very excited by this as I thought Chapter One was a very powerful work (with thanks to Uli for postng the news about Ms Roberts being on the cover of latest Wire which sent me off on a search)
  16. what with Rob Mazurek last month and now this.edition has articles on Ms Roberts, The Necks and ECM I guess the article is tied in with a new release, maybe another instalment of Coin Coin
  17. just remembered this listing http://greenchimneys.co.uk/listings/ lists a lot of the smaller venues/spaces and younger musicians
  18. and my Medieval History tutor had such a chin - I always slightly disppointed that his specialism didn't match his chin
  19. Thanks so much for posting this. His "Ballad of the Fallen" was instrumental in my discovery of Jazz. We don't get the likes of Charlie interviewd in UK so it's great to hear him speak - seems a lovely man who bears his incapacities lightly
  20. Thomas Tedesco and Ocean [Nimbus] very pleased with this new acquisition and not just for the marvellous Bobby Bradford
  21. that's about my story too
  22. If their interests include the visual arts then this is a handy site http://www.thisatthere.com/ there's some good stuff on show in town at the moment
  23. Clifford, not a great selection but in addition to Sidewinder's suggestions there are these: John Russell's monthly improv night Mopomoso is at the Vortex on Sunday 15th with its usual eclectic mix of improvisors - usually at least three different line ups and one is listed with Russell and Henry Lowther which must be good Bobby Wellins Trio is Ajani Grill and Jazz, 21/9 http://ajanigrillandjazz.co.uk/ Zoe Rahman Qt at St James Studio 18/9. www.stjamestheatre.co.uk looks like the Vortex is hosting an African music festival for a number of nights if their interests stretch that far and then there's always Otomo Yoshihide with Mats Gustafsson at Cafe Oto!! more useful and comprehensive listing than Time Out can be found here http://www.jazzinlondon.net/JIL/Sep-13.htm (don't be put off by archaic web design) lists a broad range of styles and venues. Beware some are some way out of town but any with a postcode that starts E, N, S, W and combinations thereof with lower numbers afterwards are more likely more central. I hope they have a great trip
  24. El Corazon - Blackwell/Cherry [ECM]. masterful
