I've had the Mitchell for a couple of days and I'm thoroughly enjoying it however it's almost designed for me as flute/vibes is a line up that would be close to the top of my list and Mitchell and Adasiewicz top of each instrumnets' 'must hear' players. There's some strong writing on the album and the playing's as good as you'd expect. I doubt you'll be disappointed The Rogue Art's 'to buy' so will be interested to hear your views on that one

I hadn't noticed any announcement but then I've never purchased downloads through them. I'm still in the dark ages either using Spotify as a taster before purchasing physical product or as a "radio" of music I don't want to shell the readies on. The Brotz box is very good (or at least the parts I've got through so far) so I hope you can find a download somewhere

Allegri - Misere may have become a bit of a 'standard' or even a cliche but it's very fine Victoria, Palestrina and then the English composers Tallis (yes, Spem in Alium is obvious but for a reason), Byrd and their contemporaries recordings of any of the above by The Sixteen or Tallis Scholars wouldn't be a bad place to start

I know some people think he's heaven sent as a saxophonist but that's going a bit far unconvincing album for me, sounds better in the passages when the leader's not playing by and large - but I nearly always have a "technique over content" reaction to Potter (exceptions seem to be with Motian)

I think this is as good a sampler of where Brotzmann is now as anything else out there, better even than the similar Oslo 5CD set because of the greater variation of musicians and line ups. What I like about the selection is that Herr B's not playing on everything but on many of the selections that he's not on you can hear his influence and benign presence. The Japanese presence is interesting too as there's understandably a Chicago/European predominance on many other releases. By its very nature we're not going to like everything equally but across the five discs I'm sure there's great surprises (Haino for me) and gems for us all. And yes, that Oto LP is very fine indeed,

First listen and dived straight into the Keiji Haino piece (because I knew him only by reputation) and whoa....! If the other performances are anywhere near as intense then this is going to be a hell of a ride

If we're talking "wayfaring stranger" then count me as a big fan - great rhythm to it throughout. I've never gone on to investigate other Steig so I'll be reaing posts with interest for other things to try

Thanks for resolving the mystery, Bol. I can rest easy knowing I'm not missing any inserts I think this is one of the most interesting and stimulating releases of the last few years. Sorey's use of space and contrasting dynamics in both his composition and his playing is a real signature - to not be afraid of silence or lack of rhythmic 'forward momentum' intrigues. I bought the Blaser and Grimal on the back of Koan and appreciate them both with a slight preference for the Grimal but Koan is where it's at for me

Fine album. I'm intrigued by the mention of inserts. I bought my copy direct from 482 and there's nothing other than the cardboard outer sleeve - just checked. Are we talking LP version if there was such a thing?
