I hadn't noticed any announcement but then I've never purchased downloads through them. I'm still in the dark ages either using Spotify as a taster before purchasing physical product or as a "radio" of music I don't want to shell the readies on. The Brotz box is very good (or at least the parts I've got through so far) so I hope you can find a download somewhere

This is now on Spotify in UK for any interested parties

I'm a big fan of Kenyatta's 'Girl from Martinique' and 'Freedom State Band' Any views on how Beggars & Stealers stacks up against them much appreciated. thanks in advance

Allegri - Misere may have become a bit of a 'standard' or even a cliche but it's very fine Victoria, Palestrina and then the English composers Tallis (yes, Spem in Alium is obvious but for a reason), Byrd and their contemporaries recordings of any of the above by The Sixteen or Tallis Scholars wouldn't be a bad place to start

I know some people think he's heaven sent as a saxophonist but that's going a bit far unconvincing album for me, sounds better in the passages when the leader's not playing by and large - but I nearly always have a "technique over content" reaction to Potter (exceptions seem to be with Motian)

I think this is as good a sampler of where Brotzmann is now as anything else out there, better even than the similar Oslo 5CD set because of the greater variation of musicians and line ups. What I like about the selection is that Herr B's not playing on everything but on many of the selections that he's not on you can hear his influence and benign presence. The Japanese presence is interesting too as there's understandably a Chicago/European predominance on many other releases. By its very nature we're not going to like everything equally but across the five discs I'm sure there's great surprises (Haino for me) and gems for us all. And yes, that Oto LP is very fine indeed,

First listen and dived straight into the Keiji Haino piece (because I knew him only by reputation) and whoa....! If the other performances are anywhere near as intense then this is going to be a hell of a ride

If we're talking "wayfaring stranger" then count me as a big fan - great rhythm to it throughout. I've never gone on to investigate other Steig so I'll be reaing posts with interest for other things to try

Paul Motian On Broadway Vols. 1-5
mjazzg replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Lovely series of recordings. enjoy! -
Thanks for resolving the mystery, Bol. I can rest easy knowing I'm not missing any inserts I think this is one of the most interesting and stimulating releases of the last few years. Sorey's use of space and contrasting dynamics in both his composition and his playing is a real signature - to not be afraid of silence or lack of rhythmic 'forward momentum' intrigues. I bought the Blaser and Grimal on the back of Koan and appreciate them both with a slight preference for the Grimal but Koan is where it's at for me

any grunts?

Fine album. I'm intrigued by the mention of inserts. I bought my copy direct from 482 and there's nothing other than the cardboard outer sleeve - just checked. Are we talking LP version if there was such a thing?

Good UK price for this at sainsburys. com of all places. I paid £15. first listen underway....

I'd not heard of that one but a quick search suggests it should be stellar with this line up. * Tomasz Stanko - trumpet * Tomasz Szukalski - tenor sax * Palle Danielsson - bass * Edward Vesala - drums goes for big money now, I think. start saving....

Steve, a thread here for you, provided specifically to continue "beating it to death" and others can continue to discuss the very tempting Stanko release

Thanks Ubu, some very interesting line ups. Could make a nice companion to the Oslo set from a while back

I'm always interested in anything that Rob Mazurek releases as i've found him consistently interesting and challenging for many years now. Very interested in this Octet release that combines his sao paolo and chicago confreres http://www.cuneiformrecords.com/bandsHTML/robmazurekoctet.html a must buy in this household

Agree and the two tracks I've listened to bear out your opinion

None taken; I knew that was the reason. We prefer our sports odd and complicated. Now that cricket thing has some possibilities; I can't figure it out for shit. I don't really get the scoring, but a sport where a guy can score 100 runs in one at-bat is intriguing. The ball they use is hollow, which I found out by chance while walking by a cricket game and picking up an errant ball to toss back to the players. Cricket is pretty big in Brooklyn because we have a large number of folks from the Caribbean who all played it in their home countries. No cricket ball I ever got hit by whilst batting inadequately was ever anything but solid and very hard. Not sure where the hollow Brooklyn-ball comes from. Always happy to derail a thread with cricket talk and I can't believe I missed the opportunity here earlier and now back to what I suspect will be an excrutiating and cringe-making performance by LA - how can it be anything but?
