I'm not too sure how new a release this is - I know this has been mentioned in the "now playing" thread but thought it ws of note for here too. It's as good or even better than anticipation suggests Roscoe Mitchell - duets with Tyshawn Sorey w. guest Hugh Ragin

Woody Shaw - Complete Muse Recordings on Mosaic
mjazzg replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
£16.99 at sainsbury.com is indeed "very reasonable" and very tempting indeed Looks like it's a Woody Shaw blow-out coming up over the next few weeks. Thanks for that ! I'll order one with the bread and milk.. Nectar points too (32) damn, I forgot the Nectar points! -

Thanks Jeff. I'll head off on another search now I have the American Inner City version - no liner notes, so I can't help there. Togashi recorded a lot, but it was never easy to find his stuff in the U.S., and it has now become almost impossible. For us 'Mericans, it's usually pretty easy to find Breath, a collaboration with shakuhachi player Hozan Yamamoto and pianist Yosuke Yamashita. It's maybe more of a Hozan Yamamoto album than a Togashi one, though. Anyway, someone is selling it cheaply on Amazon right now. I checked on Amazon UK and see that there are a few Togashi albums available there, including the wonderful Spiritual Moments, with Steve Lacy and Kent Carter. To simplify things, I'll say that it sounds like a cross between the Togashi album you have and a Steve Lacy trio album. If you can find the two-disc Bura-Bura, grab it. (There's also a one-disc version.) It's an all-star quartet: Togashi, Lacy, Don Cherry, and Dave Holland. Severe stereo separation of the horns, but incredible music. Again, it's always been difficult to track down. For those who don't know about Togashi - he was a pioneer of Japanese free jazz, and a frequent Steve Lacy collaborator. In 1970 he was paralyzed from the waist down in an accident, and thereafter played from a wheelchair. He obviously couldn't use kick drum or hi-hat after that, but he played a large percussion kit that enabled him to produce a very wide range of sound. He played with great sensitivity, and sounds good in any context I've heard.

East West label A very big thanks to Jeffcrom and Clifford T for their enthusiasm about this recording a week or so ago. It sent me off on a hunt that came to fruition with postie's delivery today. What a beautiful album - thanks Gents Now all I need to know is what do the Japanese sleevenotes mean? And what other recordings by this or similar line-ups exist?

Yes i have. I'm no audiophile and appreciate the release mostly to hear the session. It sounded fine. However what was interesting was that immediately after playing it I played a Liberty blue/black of Moncur's 'Some Other stuff' and it was noticeably louder and punchier with a deeper, well-rounded sound than the Heavenly Sweetness. Did you get it yet? How does it sound? I've seen mixed reviews on this series, i.e. some titles are said to sound very good, others not so much. I only have the Blue Mitchell which sounds good to me. Thinking of checking out this McLean and perhaps an Andrew Hill title or two.

Solo Instrument Albums (not piano or guitar)
mjazzg replied to StarThrower's topic in Miscellaneous Music
There are various Joe McPhee solo recordings featuring his tenor, alto, soprano and pocket trumpet playing. Some dedicated exclusively to one instrument, others not. Some feature real-time and overdub electronics. All I've heard are stimulating listens. My favourite Evan Parker may well be 'Chicago solos' on Okka which I think is his only tenor solo recording. George Lewis and Paul Rutherford have both recorded wonderful trombone solo albums -

Just too expensive for me too. Glad i got the Rivers and all the Hills and a couple of other Selects when times were better. Would still like to get Hutcherson Select someday. Braxton and Threadgill would've been nice but an unaffordable extravagance given how much i had of them already.on vinyl. I've always been disappointed that they don't reproduce artwork - never could understand why not. I can live without now and I'm glad I never caught the buy on release 'bug'.

so you weren't tempted by the vinyl version then to maintain your run? I'll be interested to hear your impressions. The samples sound intriguing but I've not quite hit "buy" yet

Thanks for posting. I'll be at the Schlippenbach, hopefully -
Loved him on 'Astral Weeks' before I knew who he was and what Jazz was. as well as sessions already mentioned I'm particularly fond of the duets with Walt Dickerson on Steeplechase

What has happened to the U.S. Postal Service?
mjazzg replied to Don Brown's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm still waiting on the new Steve Coleman CD posted by Amazon.com on 26/3. I'm begining to think this may have gone down over the Atlantic. Meanwhile received LP from US within 10 days which has been about average. On the whole I'm not disatisfied with the USPS service until now. With the new prices I'll not be finding out what it's like in the future very much at all -
Thirded....very strong release (as are the other Decoys) Seconded, it's a very good release ( first I've heard by Decoy)

Thanks I'm a customer already so will contact him Alan Ross of Jazz House Records (Leicester) had these for £13 each , which I thought was very reasonable. He's supplied all my Rogue Arts to date, ( the above plus Bindu, Book of Three, Emerald Hills)

I'm interested in both the top two, thanks for posting your thoughts. Did you source direct from the label? I'm hoping to find them stocked cheaper locally but to no avail so far Have you heard the recent Nicole Mitchell w. Adasiewicz on Delmark - excellent in my view but then I'm a big fan of both seperately
-
yes Blue Train I have the 2CD comp of Jazz Standard. I enjoyed it initially and should revisit it

I've a ton of DD releases but stopped buying new ones around the Keystone Moonshine release as I felt I'd reached saturation level. it wasn't that he was producing any less notable music I'm sure just that my ears were no longer hearing it. The vocal element of Be Still nearly tempted me back and I received the release notification for Time Travel today and thought "mmmm...shall I?". I suspect the killer new postal rates from US to UK will make the decisiion for me. I'll listen to any samples with interest though By the by, he's now a visiting prof at the Royal Academy of Music in London which has got to be a good thing for the students I'll be interested to hear what you and other folk make of the new release

Just taken my first punt on these reissues with this one I'm intrigued

Was that the Queen Elizabeth hall gig? I was there at that one too. Hill's solo set was particularly good that night. 2000/2001? Yes, that's the one. I'd gone more for Hill than Shepp and agree about the solo set. Just checked and it looks like it was 2000. Guardian review here http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2000/apr/17/jazz

Only time I saw him was in duet with Andrew Hill some years ago now. An evening that was equal parts strange and awe-inspiring. Not really a marriage made in heaven but one of convenience perhaps. Count me in as a fan of the Impulse releases but I've never warmed to the later ones. Maybe now's a time to investigate further
