I'm interested in both the top two, thanks for posting your thoughts. Did you source direct from the label? I'm hoping to find them stocked cheaper locally but to no avail so far Have you heard the recent Nicole Mitchell w. Adasiewicz on Delmark - excellent in my view but then I'm a big fan of both seperately

yes Blue Train I have the 2CD comp of Jazz Standard. I enjoyed it initially and should revisit it

I've a ton of DD releases but stopped buying new ones around the Keystone Moonshine release as I felt I'd reached saturation level. it wasn't that he was producing any less notable music I'm sure just that my ears were no longer hearing it. The vocal element of Be Still nearly tempted me back and I received the release notification for Time Travel today and thought "mmmm...shall I?". I suspect the killer new postal rates from US to UK will make the decisiion for me. I'll listen to any samples with interest though By the by, he's now a visiting prof at the Royal Academy of Music in London which has got to be a good thing for the students I'll be interested to hear what you and other folk make of the new release

Just taken my first punt on these reissues with this one I'm intrigued

Was that the Queen Elizabeth hall gig? I was there at that one too. Hill's solo set was particularly good that night. 2000/2001? Yes, that's the one. I'd gone more for Hill than Shepp and agree about the solo set. Just checked and it looks like it was 2000. Guardian review here http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2000/apr/17/jazz

Only time I saw him was in duet with Andrew Hill some years ago now. An evening that was equal parts strange and awe-inspiring. Not really a marriage made in heaven but one of convenience perhaps. Count me in as a fan of the Impulse releases but I've never warmed to the later ones. Maybe now's a time to investigate further

Yes, I was pleasantly surprised by their price too. I share your weariness, Colinmce

Does that mean they weren't quite what they were all cracked up to be.........?

Alex, I'm wondering whether the Beeb gave you any parameters for the work as it's part of the Baroque Spring? If not, did the Baroque have any influence whatsoever? A friend of mine who was at Oto has done nothing but rave about this since the perrformance so I'm looking forward to hearing it myself

Kikuchi's well worth a listen - with Motian on some of the Broadway and Trio2000 recordings or last year's ECM release was strong. He does out-Jarrett Jarrett on the vocalisation front so avoid if that's going to annoy you. If not, listen to a fine pianist

Others will probably know more about the distribution business than me but from a consumer's perspective Discovery Records seem to do a good job with some smaller, albeit mostly Euopean, labels. They have been the most cost effective source of Delmark releases since the price hike. I know nothing else about them other than being a satisfied customer http://www.discovery-records.com/

Are there any box bargains currently available?
mjazzg replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Hope everyone's faith is realised as I've just ordered it from their UK site at £10.49 - really too cheap to believe -
Always seemed technique over content to me except on his recordings with Motian where he shines for me - probably because the 'content' is so strong there

Musician curated events - they are small and will take you out of the centre of town but are accessible. worth it if you find a line-up that tempts on a night you're here http://theoxfordjazz.com/ younger, London-based musicians many associated with Loop Collective http://flimflam.org.uk/ improv/free jazz Beware the Ray's jazz section of the Foyle's website, posted above, it's hopeless and doesn't reflect the store. Foyles itself is a fine bookshop.

As already mentioned Ray's Jazz is the sole survivor of the exclusvely Jazz variety. however if you're interested in other genres as well there are a couple of stores that hold good if not large Jazz selections - Honest Jons in Portobello Market (which may be an interesting trip anyway) stocks an intriguing range of genres (check their website for an idea - although shop stock is not exactly the same. Close to Rays Jazz and HMV, Oxford Street (in its death throes?) is Berwick street where a cluster of shops have good to fair selections of second hand jazz - you can easily take a walking route that connects HMV to Rays via Berwick Street. You might try out Sounds of the Universe shop along the way in Broadwick street, another store like Honest Jons that has a small., eclectic stock amongst an array of other genres (see website for an idea) If you make it to Portobello Market you'll find Intoxica Records with a selection of second hand vinyl (the prices of which will probably shock you compared to US) and also a Record and Tape Exchange at Notting Hill underground with similar. As for live, I'd second RogerF's suggestion of checking JazzinLondon to see the variety available especially at smaller 'local' venues. I can't recommend Cafe Oto highly enough - the programme is eclectic to say the least but if you can find someone you like it has a great atmosphere. Vortex is good too. More mainstream at Ronnies (overpriced) and Pizza Express, Dean Street.
