  1. Anthony Braxton - Duets 1976 [Arista] fnally tracked a nice copy
  2. thank you, that's what I thought. A recent acquisition, Maggie Nicols is marvellous on it. I followed it by "Music by...." Barre Phillips. some great Surman on that
  3. Received my copy of 'Reality...' that was purchased due solely to this discussion. Good heavens, why didn't I know this album sooner? What a marvelously realised work - McIntyre's playing is so deep, so soulful. Thanks to everyone who mentioned it on this thread.
  4. Alfred Harth - This Earth! [ECM]
  5. Very interested, thanks David. Provides an ideal opportunity to 'road test' before shelling out the £50 or so
  6. been enjoying his leader dates since the first (but like others, with major reservations for the guitarist on Same Mother). Think his solo disc, Modernistic, is a standout solo piano recording. Seen Bandwagon twice live and they are a mighty impressive unit. I missed the Monk multimedia show he did in London and have regretted it ever since... So, yes, I think this is recognition, well deserved.
  7. Bev, thanks for the tip-off about the Unthanks, just booked some tickets. Saw them earlier in the year at Union Chapel and they were marvellous. As a big fan of both wyatt and Anthony & J's it'll be an interesting evening at least.
  8. Axis - Paul Bley [iAI] still sealed until yesterday. almost a shame to break it open next up. another new arrival, River Chant - Jimmy Giuffre Three [Choice]
  9. Rena Rama - New Album [Dragon]
  10. I've read and thoroughly enjoyed both Q and 54. Both are very readable and I'm looking forward to Manituana. Q is set in Reformation Europe and does not shy away from the violence of the era. 54 is an intriguingly plotted tale of espionage behing the "iron curtain". Neither betrayed to me that they were the product of more than one authorial voice. Members of the collective recently spoke at my (very small) local bookshop as a statement of support for independent booksellers - so they get my vote for that alone. I didn't know about this ESP tie-in so will be off the bookshop forthwith
  11. And many Free Jazz reviews are unreadable....
  12. just makes me want to hear it. Mainly as it's a Shipp album i wasn't aware of
  13. What a loss it would have been to the future record industry if these various events had taken a different turn!
  14. My Grandmother told the story of when a German bomber (I suspect fighter/bomber) flew low over Caversham Bridge in Reading, strafed the bridge and dropped some unrecognised metal, "it looked just like a tin can, Mark". For some unbeknownst reason she took it upon herself to tidy this up from the street outside her cottage (a bit like Bill's father by the sounds of things), but thankfully as she approached it a ARP warden let her know in no uncertain terms that it wasn't a good idea! Good job really as otherwise I'd not be here typing this. At the same time she had five WAAF's billeted on her and her house was referred to locally as 'the House of sin'. Sounds like some fun was had (my grandfather was posted away!)
  15. Charles Brackeen - Bannar [silkheart]
  16. also from a 'not played in ages section' Paul Motian - Dance [ECM] needs to be in the 'play a lot more often section'

    Ursula Rucker

Sweet music indeed. Thank you for posting. It's too long since I listened to her. I came across her through West London's finest 4 Hero Edit: to say, just seen the 4Hero post in the Is Rap Jazz thread. Way to go
  18. David Murray, The Roots, The Last Poets and some of Living Colour presented Tongues of Fire, a tribute to the Black Panthers in London last week. No misogyny or gun-toting (except in the accompanying visuals) here but some great rap, spoken word and Jazz all in one sonic brew.
  19. yes, it does take the concept of 'learning on the job' a bit far. I think what's so touching about the interviews with the veterans is their apparent nonchalance. Another comment was "well I'd never seen a German plane before so to see about a hundred of them silhouetted against the clouds was really rather impressive" It's truly hard to imagine what they must have gone through with sortie after sortie in terms of simple physical exhaustion - I know adrenalin's a powerful stimulant but...
  20. and what made my hair stand on end was an interview with one of those pilots where he was asked "weren't you scared?" to which he replied "I was too young to be scared". He was 19 at the time!
  21. Those important licensing etc issues aside If I've got this correct, it seems odd to me that there's no credit card online ordering for the CDs. Nor can you see what's in stock before ordering (can only do so if they've received a check/order) - is it beyond them to indicate on the site what titles they do have physically available? Certainly doesn't encourage me as a potential international customer. But hey, they suceeded in getting me to look at the site!
  22. Atomic and Vandermark 5 - that's what I call a double bill
  23. Yes, I wondered that too. Listening to Peace and Blessings which has just arrived on the back of people's recommendations here - Longineu Parsons immediately stands out - someone I've not come across before. Enjoying this disc, so thanks to those who mentioned it
  24. Interesting and touching viewing. Just ordered 'Humility....' and 'Peace and Blessings' off the back of it and everyone's comments. thanks

    windmill tilter!

yes, I've always received great service direct from BGO. Even if I do end up paying £2 or so more with them I like to think it'll help them fund the next reissue - Hum Dono, perhaps.
