I liked "Real Love" a lot better than "Free as a Bird!"

I second the original "Wingspan." Great album!

I love oldies, I love newies. I just like good music...

I can't speak for anyone else, but I find Brian/Clem's "hipper than thou" attitude to be extremely off-putting. The funny thing is that I get a LOT of ideas for music to check out from people on this board. When Jim or Lon or any number of people say, "Hey, check this out. It's really good," I'm likely to check it out. But Clem's "go listen to this and then come back and we'll talk" bit really makes me NOT want to try out the music he recommends...

Who is Dylan? When I think of that question, I think of the Kris Kristofferson song...Dylan is "partly fact, partly fiction...a walking contradiction..."

I'm not Clem, but I am sure about Beck being a Scientologist. Even if he is, so the hell what? Does Clem refuse to listen to Chick Corea, too?

"Rain" and "Paperback Writer" were released as a single to coincide with the British release of "Revolver." Greatest period in Beatles history EVER. Paul's bass on both "Paperback Writer" and "Rain" is outstanding.

Now THAT'S what I'm looking for -- tunes that sound as fresh now as they day they were recorded. I'd kind of half forgotten about She Said, She Said -- a tune that somebody like Matthew Sweet could have written, and nobody would think otherwise. "She Said, She Said" goes on my list, for sure!! The whole "Revolver" album sounds like it was recorded yesterday. It's one of the highest points in popular music. As much as I love an album like "Pet Sounds," "Revolver" leaves it in the shade...

The Harry Smith Project: Anthology of American Folk Music Revisited
Alexander replied to Adam's topic in New Releases
Well, I'm looking forward to this! I love all four volumes of the Anthology. Nothing to do with Harry Smith (I think that idolatry is silly too). I just love the music and I'm interested in hearing with these artists do with it... -
Hey, Hey...My, My. Rock and roll will never die.

It's long been my opnion that WWII has blunted our impression of the horror that was WWI. As horrific as the Holocaust, the bombing of Dresden, and Hiroshima/Nagasaki were, the fact was the mankind had seen nothing to prepare it for the horrors of the first Word War, with it's trench warfare and chemical weapons. Seeing these photos might help make WWI seem real to students in a way it never has before. It's hard to really process grainy black and white photos. But these photos, as someone else said, look as though they were taken yesterday. A great resource!

That's the song I always associate with Babs. I think J.J. Johnson is on that recording too.

I do like "The Stranger," just not as much as "Turnstiles." I also enjoy "52nd Street" and "Streetlife Serenader." I have all three on LP (inherited).

I have every BJ album ever made on cd. My mom won a contest and got all of his cd's in the mail. I wanted to sell them, but she wouldn't let me. I have listened to Turnstiles. Say Goodbye to Hollywood and James, and there's another track on it, that has some good arrangements. I think it's number 7. Don't know the name. I was just listening to it this morning. Track 7 on "Turnstiles" is "I've Loved These Days." It's a good song, but I like "Summer, Highland Falls" better. It's just a gorgeous melody. It's track 2.

I enjoy Love's albums as much as the next guy, but I don't understand this "either/or" mentality. Why can't one like both? Clem seems to imply that once one listens to Love he/she will lose any desire to hear Billy Joel (he has made similar statements on other threads regarding other artists). I don't get it. "Forever Changes" IS a great album. So is "Turnstiles." I have both. I enjoy both. I guess I've just become sick and tired of hating. I really don't hate anything anymore. I try to find something worthwhile in everything I hear. If I don't find anything, I don't hate it, I just don't like it. For me I guess it's become something of a quest to become open to everything. And it's working. I've bought things I NEVER thought I'd listen to a few years ago. I feel that nothing good ever came from ignorance. And if you haven't sat down and digested an album, that's what you're speaking from: Ignorance.

I grew up listening to his music because my parents liked him. Since, along with the Beatles, this was the first music I ever heard, I have a certain nostalgia for it. The one Joel album I really like (and own on CD) is called "Turnstiles." It contains a wonderful song called "Summer Highland Falls" that ranks as one of my all time favorite pop tunes. I recommend checking it out. "Turnstiles" was the album Joel recorded before "The Stranger" made him into a big star, and for me it's like "Revolver" to "Sgt. Pepper": It's not as well known or celebrated, but it's actually the better album.

August 2006 was a real crappy month........
Alexander replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I've been looking for a regular job since January (teaching or otherwise). No luck so far. I did some subbing last spring, but nothing's come through so far this year. Unless something comes up soon, I'm fucked... -
Well, the CD would have to have the fake ringwear to duplicate the LP cover, wouldn't it? This is different, even if it is the same thing. Kinda like making the punchline of an old joke the setup for a new one, and never telling the old one. Actually, when Columbia orginially released "Get Happy!!" on CD, they left out the fake ringware. It was added to the Rykodisc and subsequent Rhino editions, however.

Not new at all. Costello's "Get Happy!!" had fake ringware in both the LP and CD editions.

I absolutely loved the first set in the series and plan on getting the second when I have the $$$ to do so. However, I must second the comment about the lack of discographical data. I found it to be most disappointing to not be able to check the personnel, especially since Allen did such an amazing job assembling the set overall! -
Actually, one could sample one of these guys, loop it, and have a great rhythm track for a hip hop record. Sounds like the kind of thing Beck or Andre 3000 would do.
-
I'm a big Lou Reed fan as well (not "Metal Machine Music," but I have everything by the Velvet Underground and several of his more important solo albums).

I'm looking forward to this. I read about the concerts recently and I was interested to see that Beck was involved. I LOVE the Anthology and I'd love to hear the music from the concerts...
