  1. Ain't no god like an OLD god!
  2. All jazz is a fusion of something...blues, ragtime, marches, European art music...Jazz has been fusion since day one. The day jazz stops "fusing" with other musics, it will cease to be jazz...
  3. I agree with Moose's comment above. For me good rapping has less to do with lyrical cleverness and more to do with flow. That's why for the life of me I CAN'T fathom the appeal of 50 Cent. Here's a guy with the personality of a bowl of cold oatmeal. He talks like he has a mouth full of marbles. His raps are lifeless. I guess there are some who find his "thug" persona sexy, but I ain't one of them...
  4. I agree with everything in your post except your last remark. Listen to latter day Dylan recordings like "Things Have Changed" or "High Water (for Charlie Patton)" and you'll hear that he still has an amazingly expressive delivery...but it's much more subtle than it was in his youth. I agree, however, that classic performances such as these are relatively fewer and further between than they were between 1961 and, say, 1975. I'm a big fan of his singing during the Rolling Thunder Review...
  5. That's what Elvis Costello says, anyway...
  6. My first was the McLean set, bought in 1994 (roughly). I've since picked up...jeez, a whole bunch. At least 20. All on CD (although now that I have a turntable, I've thought about picking up at least one on LP).
  7. I'm in the 26-50 range...
  8. If you liked the last one, you'll like this one. Very much "of a piece." I have to be in the right mood to enjoy the "Frank and Joe Show" discs. They're well played and fun, but there's a lot of "virtuosity for virtuosity's sake" on these albums. Still, if you're a Django fan and you like that style of jazz guitar, these are worth checking out...
  9. The Van Dyck is in my backyard. I'll definitely come down and see you guys!
  10. Tried to get my wife to watch it, but she made me turn it off after about twenty minutes (if that). Oh well, to each his (or her) own...
  11. I haven't seen it yet, although I plan to. However, the South Park version was hilarious!
  12. My wife would say that men do suffer PMS: Permanent Male Syndrome.
  13. Love instrumental jazz. Love jazz with vocals. Love vocalese. Love scatting. Love Sinatra, Bennett, Billie, Ella, Sarah, etc. Love Chet both singing AND playing. There's very little I won't listen to... For some people, this must seem VERY shallow. My collection covers everything from rock to Bach and back again. When I was younger, I HATED people who claimed to like "everything" or "all kinds of music." I didn't think it was possible. Anyone who claimed to like "everything" was either lying or didn't know very much about music. Since then, I've developed my theory of the "cultural gag reflex." The theory is that most people's dislike of certain kinds of music is, in fact, extramusical. Many people claim not to like hip hop or country because of the cultural baggage these genres carry with them. Therefore, whenever I dislike something, I immedately question my reaction. Why don't I like it? Is it really a question of taste, or is it a question of cultural programming?
  14. Has anyone else noticed that the Getz didn't come out? My copy has been backordered from CD Universe, and Amazon is showing a release date of 2025(!). Also, it's not listed on Sony/Legacy's website. What happened? Why did this one get dropped?
  15. I feel sorry for her. She was a great actress. Too bad she pissed her life away.
  16. So do I. In addition, I file "Jazz At Massey Hall v.1" under Parker and volume two under Powell. If a CD is released under a band name, I would file it alphabetically under that name, even if its a one-off recording. The only exception to this that I can think of is the "New Directions" disc which I have filed under Osby. When a date is co-led, I always file it under the first name credited on the spine. If its "Mulligan and Monk," I'd file it under Mulligan. If it were "Monk and Mulligan," I'd file it under Monk. If the cover title and the artist credit on the spine differ, I defer to the spine over the cover. Here's one that bugged me for a long time: Should albums by Faces be shelved with the albums by the Small Faces, or should they be filed separately? In the past, I shelved the separately, but more recently I've changed my mind and filed them together (under S, in case anyone was wondering). Another one that bugged me for a long time was whether or not albums by groups with frontmen who went on to celebrated solo careers should be filed under that artist's name. For example: Would you file CDs by Them under T, or would you file them with the Van Morrison discs? Would you file "Cheap Thrills" by Big Brother and the Holding Company under B, or would you file it with the Janis Joplin discs? And why don't a feel the same impulse to file the Faces discs with the Rod Stewart discs or the solo Beatles material with the Beatles? Curiouser and curiouser!
  17. I only have three categories of music: Jazz, Classical, and Everything else. So "Modern Sounds in C&W" is filed with the Ray Charles CDs, which are pretty much right next to the Patsy Cline CDs!
  18. If there's an expanded verison coming out, I'll wait...
  19. They play normally in my DVD/CD/SACD player, but it does take a couple of seconds longer for it to read. I think this is absolutely disgraceful. If I buy music, I want to listen to it in whatever way I choose, which includes on my iPod!
  20. I'm very happy with my iPod. I've had it for months now, and the only problem I've had was solved by simply rebooting it. No music was lost. I think its just backlash against a popular product. People see everybody walking around with those little white earbuds (which I hate, btw) and they don't want to join the herd. For myself, I just use my regular headphones (Sony MDR-CD180s) and chucked the earbuds. Even better, I hook my iPod up to my stereo and listen to it that way.
  21. This bitch is useless. She can't even make a G&T!!!

  23. I picked this disc up around the same time I was getting heavily into Duke, which means I was also getting heavily into Hodges. This is a wonderful disc...a truly outstanding meeting between two kindred spirits, despite the differences in age, race, and musical affiliation. Great stuff. Oddly enough, I don't think I have ANY Mulligan that ISN'T a team-up with another notable musician. I have two with Desmond, one with Getz, obviously the material with Baker, the one with Hodges and the one with Monk. I do have one of the Concert Jazz Band albums (and that one's full of notable side-men), but that's about it. What else should I look into? Does anyone have the disc that's just been reissued by Sony?
  24. Okay...I got the .8 position, which pays less than the full-time gig, but is still more money than I've ever made in my life. I'm just glad I got a job! I was getting nervous towards the end of July! Thanks again for all the good wishes! My orientation is next week, so I expect to learn the answers to the many questions I have about this coming year!
