  4. Sco opener is comin up fast. Fellas only have one short set, so get there early. Should prove to be quite a big night. g
  5. The Meters are impossibly funky. It is that same New Orleans thing that Idris Muhammad and them cats have. ← The drum feel on Sissy Strut seems to allude most drummers. It is sooo loose and funky. I end up just telling my drummers to do their own thing when they start getting frustrated with the feel. One old friend of mine, who is into TOP big time tried telling me that The Meters were too sloppy. I don't know... I'd rather have the funk err on the side of loose, than too whitey up-tighty. Give It Up or Turn It Loose!
  6. Well I finally got to see the fellas play tonight (it's been a while), and it was my first time in the Creole Gallery. Great show and a great room! A little over 70 people situated in a very cozy performance space with nice lighting and a nice stage. Fellow musician and good friend Andy Wilson of the band Steppin In It showed up to play on Brother Ray and did a fantastic job. Not to be outdone Randy stepped out from behind the drums and the two had a friendly head cuttin' session that had the crowd going wild. Jim and Joe sounded great, and the whole band received a standing ovation at the end of Pumpkin Pie. There is just something about that song live...
  7. Another interesting phenomemon is the whole "Instant Live" concept. Personally, I really like the idea of attending a concert and having an audio souvenir of the experience. Maybe the best of both worlds. The artist(s) gets paid, and fans can purchase a high quality recording of the show that is instantly available after the show. ← The bass player in my band is the younger brother of Lamar Williams. Lamar was with the Allman Bros in the 70's. Anyhow, I am not a huge Allman Bros fan but James gets backstage passes and recently asked me to tag along. To make a long story longer, I bought the Instant Live for that performance for 25 bucks. Glad I did. The CD helps keep the memories of the fun time I had that night, and they had some guy filling in for Warren Haynes and he was smokin'. They also had this very greazy sax player. And of course, the rest of the band sounded great as well. Very cool concept. This gives me another idea: Jim had some young kid, just last night, ask if he could tape one of their future shows. I think it would be a cool policy to say "hey, anytime, just do me a favor and pls buy this CD right here (assuming stock on hand), before you do it...". In smaller situations like that, it might work. And it seems reasonable. Just a thought.
  8. Excellent discussion, fellas. All around. g
  9. Tonight's the night... I got me a date with the Mrs., and we are getting some grubbage before hand. Should be a funky good time.
  10. lol, I thought the very same thing. At any rate, it should be big fun tomorrow.
  11. Jim, ask him next week. g
  12. And if anybody is naive enough to think that somebody like Scofield is doing what he's doing entirely for some abstract, altrusitic reason(s), I've got an autographed copy of the Bolden cylinder that you can have for a very reasonable price. ← lol Thanks, I needed that.

  14. Some more jazz or at least jazzy artists who allow or have allowed taping: MMW Melvin Sparks Bela Fleck Oteil Anyhow, Aw Heck This Site Looks Almost Official
  15. Right on. I concur. And by the way, nice points.
  16. "What's so funny about an official list? If we aren't talking about official, authorized, take-it-to-the-bank (or the judge) permissions, then it's all bullshit." Then it is ALL bullshit? Wow. That is some crystal ball you have there. Let's us see, this unofficial site links official websites in several cases. The official websites indicate liberal taping policy. So, in those cases it wouldn't be "bullshit". So your universal quantifier "all" is off. See two people can play this game of yours. See how silly it is? Problem is, I am better equipped for it. Now, for the last time. How is the model itself flawed? Btw, add Bruce Hornsby, Jim Alfredson, and Joe Gloss to the list of those who allow taping within certain restrictions. Man, without even trying I am approaching 'several'. What constitutes many anyhow? Oh I know, you are going to call one of the above not a real jazz musician, and subsequently believe you are negating the main premise. This list is interesting Btw, there is a search engine at the other site. You can search for jazz musicians. There looks to be many. But you can go nitpik and state you've never heard of any of them, therefore, they aren't relevant (or some similiar nonsense akin to what you put forth earlier). Mike, your karate is no match for my kung fu. Now for absolutely the last time: How is the model itself flawed?

lol. You got me! I was reading the thread, scrollin' down, and bam! Anyhow, I needed a good chuckle. Rough couple of days here. g

  19. Forest for the trees... You desire an official list? That is funny. Anyhow, I think it appears to be a very honest and frank list. It indicates who allows taping and who doesn't. Obviously, the list of who does, is quite large. By all accounts, this list is a bit dated, and yet, with the growing jam band scene it is an economic model worth considering. This is the third time I've mentioned the model. Maybe it is the fourth. You tell me. Anyhow, the main question once again, and please consider it directly, is whether it's a viable model for bands for increased exposure and subsequent increased revenue, (and if it could benefit artists outside of the jam band scene). Many jazz artists seem to think so. Metheny is one of them. Mose Allison is not. Why have they decided differently? Is Metheny merely weak? Or does his particular product better fit the model? Or Is Mose old fashioned and woefully behind the times? These are the essential questions. Nit pickin' diverts.

  21. Hmmm, somebody should have taken its pulse before release. Just kiddin' ahem Seriously, (and if the author of said article happens to be reading this), it is always nice to get press.
  22. Anybody have any suggestions for gear? But seriously, board feeds sound like shit, generally. So, I can see why someone wouldn't want those floating around. I will also qualify further, Big O Records does allow taping in most cases. The venues must be cool with it, and not when we are taping a show of our own for purposes of makin' our own CD. So, Baker's is out. Plus, I don't know if the owner would want all those telescoping mini booms in the air. These qualifications don't negate the general soundness of the marketing model. Still not sure what MF is railin' against. Greg Big O Records
  23. Hell yeah. No need to cite Blakey, either. Pure genius Joe!!!
  24. Doesn't Scofied have limitations? For example, if I remember correctly doesn't he limit his consent to the taping of his jam band group and not necessarily his acoustic jazz groups? Also, I think I also remember that he does not allow online or bittorrent distribution of any of his music. Assuming I am correct I do not think an artist with qualifications is the best example to use to prove your points. ← Maybe not the best example, but certainly a relevant and thought provoking one. His limitations regarding groups essentially other than his own, are probably out of respect for his fellow players in those semi-ad hoc'd conditions. Additionally, he ought not make assumptions about what upcoming configurations may or may not approve. Seems like a reasonable policy to me. Mr Scofield is a serious and hardworking artist with brilliant management. To me this is quite evident. This is a good discussion to have, and I am glad to see that some folks are at least considering its plausibility. g (edited for typo)
