Baker's is not in a rough area. I'm from Flint, come for a visit.
But seriously, I don't want people getting the wrong impression here. Sure if you head down to 7 mile you can get into a higher crime area, but 8 mile on up is fine (you did see the movie right? ). Ferndale is right there, and beautiful. Moreover, Baker's has secured parking, is near a very busy major intersection, and is a very bustling and positive place.
Many areas in Detroit are still viable and others are up and coming. If one desires a more posh setting for a hotel, I would recommend going up to Royal Oak, or down to one of the fancy hotels on the river.
