  1. I think 'Latin Kaleidoscope' is one of the most enjoyable CBBB albums. There seems to have been a string of recent SABA/MPS reissues of other artists as well, but I haven't been able to find any comprehensive listing.
  2. I also love vintage gear. I've used a Harman/Kardon 930 from 1973 for more than ten years and wouldn't want to change it for anything else. My setup:
  3. The rights on photographs are sytematically ignored on this board too! Get furious everybody!! Seriously, in fact as I pointed out in another thread cover images are now often doctored so as to resemble originals without infringing copyright, so this issue has plainly come up somehow and in some context. As for performing rights, of course the so-called gray labels make a point of saying they have paid that, and maybe they have. In relation to both those issues (of disfigured quotation and avoiding paying composers) it is worth remembering that one reason the tunes on so many hard bop style LPs are so uh unmemorable is that they are hastily composed nothings designed to fit a famous chord sequence, thus avoiding royalties to the composer and earning them for the new 'composer'. Of course why *this* should be is another whole question in the history of copyright, but it is that history people here get bent out of shape about. And of course no-one here has yet turned their righteous anger on Charlie Parker or Lee Morgan for ripping off George Gershwin with their grey market recompositions... I don't think the fact that bad art is protected by copyright is enough to quash the IP laws.
  4. I have no problem with the moderating. These reissues may be legal in some countries, illegal in others; either way, they are easy enough to find even without direct links from here. While I don't think it would matter too much to allow links, I have sympathy for the view of the owner of these forums from a moral point of view. I can't say that I worry a lot about the sales figures of companies who are never doing anything else than copying the work of others.
  5. That's great! I can't thank you enough, Flurin!
  6. After some correspondence it has turned out that no publisher has the rights for "Stars" and that permission must be obtained from Mr. Kleinschuster himself. As always, I would be very grateful for any information that could help to put me in contact with Erich Kleinschuster.
  7. I'll be able to check this later, but I believe that the japanese "Inner Space" CD uses the same master as the 70s twofer LP, which had added reverb. I think original vinyl sounds OK, if somewhat thin, and that the digipak is not too much worse.
  8. To put the prices in perspective: Jerry Seinfeld is appearing here in Stockholm in a 15.000 seat arena this spring, and the tickets are more than twice the price of Shorter at Olympia.
  9. I think this policy might backfire. Many sellers will probably stop offering international shipping, which in turn will decrease the overall bidding level. eBay has dominated the online auction market for too long. Maybe the right time for a competitor to enter the scene?
  10. Rather than to create a new thread, I', posting my question here. My only eBay experience is from the buyer's end, but against better judgment I'm now considering listing a couple of items for auction. There is no eBay site for Sweden, so I'll have to list them on eBay.com or eBay.co.uk. eBay is forcing me to set a "domestic" shipping cost for the US (or UK) that is way below the actual cost. Is there any way to override these settings (that obviously do not make sense for sellers outside the US or UK)? A flat rate won't do it, since it's limited by eBay according to what "average" buyers find "reasonable".
  11. Unfortunately, Björn Netz passed away last year.
  12. The IAEA introduced a system for rating nuclear events in 1990, called INES (International Nuclear Event Scale). Chernobyl was rated "7" which is the highest level. The last official statement from Japanese authorities regarding the INES rating seems to be from three days ago when it was rated "4", but the French nuclear safety authorities (among others) have upgrated the rating to "6". Here's a summary on the IAEA website: http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/tsunamiupdate01.html
  13. It makes the quieter passages louder relative to the louder passages, i.e. the dynamic range of the music is reduced. Excessive compression quashes the dynamic range. Exactly - which is why compression doesn't make the music actually "louder". Loudness = volume = decibels. The way I understand it, the term 'loudness' does not equal decibels. Loudness is related to how a sound is perceived by the human ear, and compression typically makes a recording sound louder (to humans) when played at the same volume. See Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness
  14. Maybe the fanatics are afraid that the cut-outs most likely are from the end of the pressing run when the stampers were more worn. Seems like a long shot, though.
  15. I hadn't realised the Clare Fischer Select had gone, it's one of my favourites. Still, I'm surprised that it has sold out when some of the other (more popular?) sets are still around. Was it a 5000 copy set? There never was a Clare Fischer Select. You are both probably referring to The Pacific Jazz Piano Trios Select with sessions under the leadership of Russ Freeman, Richard Twardzik, Jimmy Rowles and (indeed) Clare Fischer. Most of Fischer's recordings for PJ were originally released on 2 albums, 3 songs remained unissued; his complete PJ output can be found on the Select. I was a bit careless; it was indeed the "Piano Trios" Select I was referring to. To clarify, perhaps we should say that it's Clare Fischer's trio albums on Pacific Jazz that are on the Mosaic Select. There are also the albums "Extension" and "Manteca" for larger band. I think that set was one of a few which were prematurely discontinued due to some error at the pressing plant; they mistakenly distroyed the masters, or something to that effect.
  16. As well every other post I've seen here on the subject, I've got nothing but praise for Hiroshi. Shipping rates are very reasonable. I ordered 7 CDs in December; the charges were 1580 Yen, 13-14 EUR. There's some interesting stuff in the "999 Yen batch" (posted by Bentsy here). For those who missed the Clare Fischer Mosaic Select (myself included) here's a chance to get his two first Pacific Jazz albums: TOCJ 50134 Fischer,Clare(p)/First Time Out TOCJ 50135 Fischer,Clare(p)/Surging Ahead 'Barefoot Adventure' is a nice one with Bud Shank, Bob Cooper and Carmell Jones: TOCJ 50141 Shank,Bud(as)/Barefoot Adventure This is lightweight, but has splendid woodwind arrangements by Clare Fischer: TOCJ 50111 Shearing,George(p)/Bossa Nova
  17. Yes, indeed! All recordings I've heard with J.J. and Jaspar together are so fine, so I'll have to get this one as well...
  18. Yes, looks good. I'm assuming that none of this Baker/Mulligan/JJ material has appeared before in any of the Proper sets ...... or various Mosaic big box/selects? Just checking. I think these were issued by Muziek Centrum Nederland in 2007-2009. http://www.muziekcentrumnederland.nl/nl/muziek-informatie-centrum/nieuws/artikel/artikel/931/ http://www.muziekcentrumnederland.nl/muziek-informatie-centrum/nieuws/artikel/artikel/3014/ However, they are 18 Euro each if you order from the source, so it may actually be cheaper to get them from Hiroshi.
  19. A tentative Kimberly discography: http://www.bsnpubs.com/pri/kimberly.html
  20. I've not seen NHO, but on an Oscar Peterson Pablo album he was called just "Niels Pedersen".
  21. I'm just curious; does "live in the studio" (=transcription) mean anything else than a studio recording intended for broadcast? Could a recording session when the tunes are not recorded in order (and when there may be false starts and alternate takes and so on) still be "live in the studio", or does the term implicate a "live" recording of a whole set from start to finish?
  22. Just something that came to my mind. I recall that "Chaney" had 3001. Maybe a concept for a thread; "Member numbers you remember..."
  23. "Art Worker" was fake live, with applause dubbed-in by the Moon "engineers". Not uncommon for Europe during these years, it seems to have been a plain studio recording - like a session for an album - made for later broadcast as a "concert without audience". There were sessions like these made in Sweden too, and I think other countries as well. Edit: BTW, I just noticed that this was my 1611:th post here. Wasn't that your member number back at the BNBB, Jim?
  24. Lots of interesting stuff there that haven't been on CD before. And they're all 999 Yen (~9 EUR) apice!
