  1. This one looks like a "real" BN sleeve by Reid Miles. Is it? MG No, it's by Patrick Roques. But it's nice; one of the better "new" covers, I think.
  2. The 'Parkertown' pressing looks best!
  3. OK, now I just have to spin that "Rainbow" edition of 'Patterns'. Parkertown: Sidewinder: and, for myself...:
  4. Nice one ! I have the original "Rainbow series" LP, but the cover looks so dull that I'm thinking of getting a copy of the Connoisseur LP, or even the CD, just because it would probably make me bring out this one more often. How's the sound on those Connoisseur LPs?
  5. As expressed in this thread and elsewhere the Japanese remasterings of jazz recordings (Blue Note in particular) seem to have changed in later years. There is supposed to be a thread (which I can't find) about the sound quality of particular titles in the TOCJ-6000 series somewhere; at least someone (I think it was couw) mentioned the existence of such a thread in another thread I can't find at the moment... Anyway, I would appreciate any help in finding this thread. I'm not trying to restart the old argument about what compression, no-noise etc. is, and if and how it has been applied on the TOCJ-6000 series. I'm just curious about if any titles from this series are to my taste. And while we're at it: Some titles from the older TOCJ-4000 series still seem to be repressed every now and then. Anyone got any idea why these sell in Japan for almost twice the price as the TOCJ-6000 series? Because they sound better...? :rsly:
  6. I agree completely. Shihab doesn't have a thread of his own here; someone ought to do something about it one of these days...
  7. Herbie Hancock 'Maiden Voyage'. This is my only BN King pressing, sounds better than almost anything I've heard on vinyl.
  8. When going through a pile of old LPs I've put away long ago because I didn't find them interesting, I found this oddity: The Delegates 'Convention "72"' (Mainstream MRL 100) Supposedly recorded in 1972. Produced by Nick Cenci & Nick Kousaleos for Nik-Nik Productions The LP is mono Side 1 1. Richard M. Nixon - Face the Issues (5:50) 2. L.B.J. Branch (1:35) 3. Ramsey Clark (1:06) 4. Convention '72 (5:06) Side 2 1. George McGovern (2:29) 2. Spiro Agnew (1:26) 3. The Godfather - Interview (7:07) 4. Sargent Shriver (2:31) 5. Sydney - Singing "My Way" (3:20) The track timing are from the labels. It's a comedy album - how it ended up on Mainstream I can't imagine - and tiresome as it is I couldn't bare sitting it through to check the track timings. I could do it if you're interested, of course. I'll try to do a cover scan - it's as tacky as the album itself.
  9. Jimmy Smith 'Plain Talk' (original BN Liberty pressing)

  11. Is only one "Happy Birthday" thread really enough for MG? Happy birthday, MG!!!
  12. Jan Hammer's playing on the Elvin dates is very good. He certainly had jazz chops. One track has him and Chick Corea trading fours (or eights, can't remember right now) on Rhodes. Sometimes he could sound a bit "dry" - like a more chopsy/abstract version of Corea, if that could be imagined - but this is nothing like 'Miami Vice Theme' at all.
  13. Happy birthday, Marcus! I wish you all the best!
  14. Whoa--Sahib Shihab? How is this? Apparently, I haven't opened this thread since posting here in May... :rsly: Anyway, it's a fascinating album. Shihab fits well with "The Beduins" et al. For once a synthesis between jazz and ethnic music which is not simply jazz with a wooden flute. More "ethnic" than "jazzy".
  15. Thanks for checking! Not that I even particularly like the organ playing on that track...
  16. Hey, Jim! Aren't you the kind of guy who has 'Midnight Walk' on vinyl? If so, could you check if there's any organ on the title track...
  17. Jean-Luc Ponty 'King Kong - Plays the Music of Frank Zappa' (Pacific Jazz original, before Zappa was removed from back cover pictures).
  18. Much appreciated, Scott!
  19. If the hole is, say, 3 millimeters off center it will increasingly affect the sound as the groove radius gets smaller and smaller. At the beginning of a record the radius is about 15 centimeters, while for the last groove it will be more like 5 centimeters. The hole is still 3 millimeters off center; the error increases from 3/150 mm = 2 percent to 3/50 mm = 6 percent. It sounds three times worse!
  20. Perhaps the Organissimo forum members could buy them, and then split them up.
  21. Well, just as soon as I'd posted the link, the site went down. Anyway, here's another one: http://www.thevintageknob.org/THEVAULT/DRA...T/DRAGONCT.html
  22. Perhaps time to get the self-centering turntable - the Nakamichi TX-1000! Nakamich TX-1000 turntable. Manufactured in the beginning of the 80s, price then around $20.000...
  23. I'm just listening to the Andrew Hill twofer 'One for One' (reissued on CD as Pax), and while I like this session a lot (cant figure out why it was years since I listened to it), the vinyl suffers from a problem which has turned up just one time too many on my blue label UA BN pressings: the center hole is not in the center of the LP. Sometimes it affects only one side of the record, sometimes both. Among Blue Note LPs I've only encountered this problem with blue label United Artists pressings, but so many of those I have are affected that I wonder how common this problem was. It's present on several of my twofers and at least one of the repressings of older titles (it happens to be 'Speak Lika a Child'). The worst case was Jackie McLean's 'Jacknife' where I had to make the hole really oval (several millimeters wider) to make the record play OK. Does this ever happen to anyone else?
  24. Is there anyone around here who has come across a Scorpio reissue which sounds good? What are the chances if pressing quality is erratic and tape sources dubious (I wouldn't think Blue Note would let a low budget operation use anything than second or third generation copies).
  25. Maybe the track titles are mixed up on the Collectables reissue? 'Midnight Walk' is the first track of the album (3:22). The organ is in the left channel (the same channel as the piano) and plays a rhythmic figure in "unison" with the drums throughout.
