  1. Ubu, what are your thoughs on the cello as a solo instrument? I can't really stand Ron Carter on cello (though it may have more to do with his choice of notes to play; it sounds pointless to me)... I can understand it gives a bassist the opportunity to step into the role of a solo horn, but I tend to prefer the sound of a bass over a plucked cello.
  2. Permanent(?) fix: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...st&p=676367
  3. Apparently it was mastered by Michael Fossenkemper of TurtleTone Studios. It's listed on their website: http://www.turtletonestudio.com/mike.html But no release so far. If ever.
  4. Now I see, I had to click on options>display modes>switch to standard.
  5. It comes out funny here too... and since clicking on that link every other thread does as well...
  6. I think it has been repressed at least once on some budget label. They play with a rhythm section (Michelot/Clarke) and mostly stay out of eachothers way. Perhaps not the greatest duo recording ever IMO, but good and enjoyable. The vinyl is on BYG, right? I've always been curious about that one, though it's been pricey when I've seen it offered. That's the one. Did not realized it became pricey because the vinyl was seen pretty often in stores here at the time. My copy carries an autograph from Monsieur Solal!
  7. Not sure, but might have been Swedish jazz bassist and record company boss Simon Brehm (1921-1967). I've seen reruns of other TV shows hosted by him (most of them many years ago). There are early 60s shows with Sonny Rollins, Ben Webster and lots of other jazz greats on visit in Stockholm. Pretty sure everything is still in the archives of the Swedish Television. Simon Brehm with bassists Ray Brown and Erik Linström:
  8. I think the gramophone horn is actually a miniature trumpet. It seems that the TV show was called "The Trumpet" ('Trumpeten' in Swedish), presumably dedicated to (jazz?) trumpeters. Those really were the days...
  9. Göran Lindberg (p), Göran Pettersson (b), Leif Wennerström (dr). They appeared also with other guesting artists at "Gyllene Cirkeln" (The Golden Circle) where the Dorham video was recorded. Here with Idrees Sulieman:
  10. And Dmitry's gone too.
  11. I'm late as always, but I hope your birthday was great. In fact, I hope that you're having a great day today too!
  12. Sold it ages ago, but I'm pretty sure he plays bass guitar. Electric, that is... Spectacularly forgettable.
  13. Of course it's the filter cigarette I consider the greatest creation of man... :rsly:
  14. Thanks for letting me know, Flurin. FWIW Bock's Music Shop has both volumes for 20.90 EUR apiece. Ordered from Bock once; everything went fine. Can't remember exactly what the shipping charges were - probably they were actual costs, give or take a few cents.
  15. The guy in the apartment above me is playing the trombone, sometimes a little too late in the evening, but I'd rather use earplugs on those rare occasions than say something about it. After all, I'm playing the piano... He is apparantly retired, but plays dixieland at some bar nearby regularly. I could never identify what records he plays, but it seems to be dixieland, swing or -revival kind of stuff. Once in a while he plays some honky-tonk piano as well; unbearably out of tune...
  16. I think he played electric on some 70s Mike Longo album on Groove Merchant, not too bad as I recall. Try to stay clear of albums featuring him on electric piccolo bass.
  17. UNESCO is not impressed. http://portal.unesco.org/en/ev.php-URL_ID=...ECTION=201.html
  18. Not trying to stir up any hard feelings or anything, but I always thought Hank sounded tired and out of pitch on that one.
  19. Well, perhaps finally the truth about this session will be revealed... or maybe not. :rsly: Has anyone ordered yet? Is there a track listing with composer credits or timings available?
  20. Isn't Mosaic half-owned by Capitol, which is owned by EMI?
  21. As I did care, I looked for the post and found it here (if anyone cares... ): http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...st&p=420461
  22. Septet is interesting, but to me it feels a bit as if the compositions lack somewhat in structure. I still enjoy them, though.
  23. I have the LP version of the twofer, and they're not included on that issue. But maybe the CD is different? On a sidenote: It appears that Cedar Walton is off-mike on the Jail recording and had to overdub everything, but you can also hear a faint second Fender Rhodes in the background, presumably from the original concert recording. Anyway, good to se all these coming out.
  24. They're offering the two Lucky Thompson GM albums 'I Offer You' and 'Goodbye Yesterday' at $10.99 apiece - and a double CD of both (a straight copy of the old GM twofer) at $13.99. A randomly chosen best-of from the two sessions is also available as 'Home Comin' on a $5.99 Lester Radio Corporation CD...
  25. Perhaps I should have said I hadn't heard any composition similar to this one on any other Harold Land gramophone record...
