  1. I think he played electric on some 70s Mike Longo album on Groove Merchant, not too bad as I recall. Try to stay clear of albums featuring him on electric piccolo bass.
  2. UNESCO is not impressed. http://portal.unesco.org/en/ev.php-URL_ID=...ECTION=201.html
  3. Not trying to stir up any hard feelings or anything, but I always thought Hank sounded tired and out of pitch on that one.
  4. Well, perhaps finally the truth about this session will be revealed... or maybe not. :rsly: Has anyone ordered yet? Is there a track listing with composer credits or timings available?
  5. Isn't Mosaic half-owned by Capitol, which is owned by EMI?
  6. As I did care, I looked for the post and found it here (if anyone cares... ): http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...st&p=420461
  7. Septet is interesting, but to me it feels a bit as if the compositions lack somewhat in structure. I still enjoy them, though.
  8. I have the LP version of the twofer, and they're not included on that issue. But maybe the CD is different? On a sidenote: It appears that Cedar Walton is off-mike on the Jail recording and had to overdub everything, but you can also hear a faint second Fender Rhodes in the background, presumably from the original concert recording. Anyway, good to se all these coming out.
  9. They're offering the two Lucky Thompson GM albums 'I Offer You' and 'Goodbye Yesterday' at $10.99 apiece - and a double CD of both (a straight copy of the old GM twofer) at $13.99. A randomly chosen best-of from the two sessions is also available as 'Home Comin' on a $5.99 Lester Radio Corporation CD...
  10. Perhaps I should have said I hadn't heard any composition similar to this one on any other Harold Land gramophone record...
  11. Clare Fischer 'Songs for Rainy Day Lovers'
  12. I have never heard anything which sounds as "Man on Mercury" on any other album, although I haven't heard all of Land's 70s albums. It's rather free-ish; a short chromatic/chaotic theme, and mostly "free" (as in "no discernable chord progression") impro over a very fast beat.
  13. Corea turns 66 today. Happy birthday!
  14. Most recordings have "fake" reverb. In this case it might have been applied a bit carelessly, though. The sound in general is muddy. Original vinyl is not better in this regard. If anything, the otherwise so-so French DMM pressings sound OK in the case of this particular album. However, the music itself is excellent. The playing sounds more varied and dynamic than on the other collaborations of Hutcherson/Land. In a good sense, it doesn't really sound like a late 60s Blue Note album.
  15. I believe the two sessions were from the late 60s, rather than the 70s. I also think they are the last sessions in any way similar Hutcherson's classic earlier albums. Already one year later, "San Fransisco" was a step towards the ever-blander lite-jazz albums to come, not so much in sound, but in spirit. "Medina" is a worthwhile disc, but not at any cost. Get it if you are a fan of Hutcherson or Land. But the OOP "Total Eclipse" is much, much better.

    Donald Byrd "KOFI"

Thanks, Flurin! After moving last november I didn't have any Internet connection at home. Was occupied at work, too. Anyway, things are starting to lighten up.

He was buried in a studio orchestra on a 1971 Carmen McRae date, but otherwise, yes. Link to the Duke Pearson Discography.

Disco-funk was not the right setting for McLean, nor Henderson. My personal opinion, of course...
  19. I see on the Fresh Sound site that the edited tracks have been restored, but since the master tape is destroyed some of the tracks must be LP dubs. How's the sound quality on those?
  20. The only reference to "Crazed Olaf" in the Swedish Jazz Discography is this session: Rolf Ericson (tp); Charlie Parker (as); Gösta Theselius (p); Thore Jederby (b); Jack Norén (dr) "Amiralen", Malmö, Nov 22, 1950 Anthropology Cheers Lover Man Cool Blues Released on: Oktav OKTLP164, Collector JGN1002, Scan JPG-2, Crazed Olaf CPACS195, Spotlite 124/125, Xanadu 122 http://www.visarkiv.se/jazzdiskografi/jazzdiskografi_P.pdf EDIT: Corrected recording date.
  21. It was reissued by Mighty Quinn: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...91840&BAB=E
  22. Recently I won an auction for a Hank Jones Savoy LP. It was described as... Near Mint Minus! I thought I would take a chance on it because it seemed like a good deal even for a VG++ record. It turned out it was in pretty bad shape, but as I had just moved I didn't have my stereo at hand and wasn't able to play it at that time. I didn't have the time to go though a lot of trouble just to check the LP, so I ended up giving the seller positive feedback anyway. Of late, I've been disappointed almost every time I've gotten LPs from eBay. No more of that for me.
