How is the New Mosaic single Newport 1958 ?
Daniel A replied to Jazztropic's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sonny Lester was splicing his way well into the late 60s. But that doesn't make it more professional... -

(RIP) Is Jack Wilson (Atlantic & Blue Note 60s pianist) dead?
Daniel A replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Re-issues
Forgot to mention that 'Ramblin', while stated as "Out of print", seems to be available from freshsoundrecords.com. At least you can put it in you shopping basket. -

The Collectables reissues are mostly mediocre when it comes to sound (look elsewhere on these forums for further rants). Always go for original vinyl if a turntable is at hand. 'Brazilian Mancini' on Vault is not too exciting; 'Ramblin' is said to be rather better but unfortunately I have not heard it myself. Look for several other fine sideman appearances, for example with Roy Ayers. -
I wish them both a happy birthday! I'll spin "Here's Love" (Argo, 1963) with Hank, Kenny, Milt Hinton and Elvin right now! For that matter, there's much more under Hank's polished surface than many seem to think.

I'm interested in both, but don't tell sidewinder! Many thanks for checking this out for me! Let me know if you want any help with Swedish stuff some time.

Oh, no.... And that one seems to be something people are holding on to (quite understandably). Not many used copies around.

Speaking of Rearward/Schema, has anyone been in contact with them via e-mail? I've tried to use the address on their site (info@ishtar.it) but the mails are bouncing back. The reason I'm trying to reach them is that it seems impossible to order the Clarke-Boland album "Our Kinda Strauss" though it is still listed on the site; it just doesn't turn up in the shopping cart. A pity if this title is deleted... The website is here.

Thanks! OP probably would be my choice, but I admit that I haven't heard that much jazz cello.
-
Ubu, what are your thoughs on the cello as a solo instrument? I can't really stand Ron Carter on cello (though it may have more to do with his choice of notes to play; it sounds pointless to me)... I can understand it gives a bassist the opportunity to step into the role of a solo horn, but I tend to prefer the sound of a bass over a plucked cello.

Apparently it was mastered by Michael Fossenkemper of TurtleTone Studios. It's listed on their website: http://www.turtletonestudio.com/mike.html But no release so far. If ever.

It comes out funny here too... and since clicking on that link every other thread does as well... -
I think it has been repressed at least once on some budget label. They play with a rhythm section (Michelot/Clarke) and mostly stay out of eachothers way. Perhaps not the greatest duo recording ever IMO, but good and enjoyable. The vinyl is on BYG, right? I've always been curious about that one, though it's been pricey when I've seen it offered. That's the one. Did not realized it became pricey because the vinyl was seen pretty often in stores here at the time. My copy carries an autograph from Monsieur Solal!

Not sure, but might have been Swedish jazz bassist and record company boss Simon Brehm (1921-1967). I've seen reruns of other TV shows hosted by him (most of them many years ago). There are early 60s shows with Sonny Rollins, Ben Webster and lots of other jazz greats on visit in Stockholm. Pretty sure everything is still in the archives of the Swedish Television. Simon Brehm with bassists Ray Brown and Erik Linström:

I think the gramophone horn is actually a miniature trumpet. It seems that the TV show was called "The Trumpet" ('Trumpeten' in Swedish), presumably dedicated to (jazz?) trumpeters. Those really were the days...

Göran Lindberg (p), Göran Pettersson (b), Leif Wennerström (dr). They appeared also with other guesting artists at "Gyllene Cirkeln" (The Golden Circle) where the Dorham video was recorded. Here with Idrees Sulieman:

And Dmitry's gone too.

I'm late as always, but I hope your birthday was great. In fact, I hope that you're having a great day today too!

Sold it ages ago, but I'm pretty sure he plays bass guitar. Electric, that is... Spectacularly forgettable.

Thanks for letting me know, Flurin. FWIW Bock's Music Shop has both volumes for 20.90 EUR apiece. Ordered from Bock once; everything went fine. Can't remember exactly what the shipping charges were - probably they were actual costs, give or take a few cents.

The guy in the apartment above me is playing the trombone, sometimes a little too late in the evening, but I'd rather use earplugs on those rare occasions than say something about it. After all, I'm playing the piano... He is apparantly retired, but plays dixieland at some bar nearby regularly. I could never identify what records he plays, but it seems to be dixieland, swing or -revival kind of stuff. Once in a while he plays some honky-tonk piano as well; unbearably out of tune...
