  1. 1954, Dave Brubeck records for Columbia (Brubeck Time) 1960, Frank Strozier records for Vee Jay, released as Cloudy and Cool, aka Cool, Calm and Collected, aka Here's Frank Strozier
  2. Just in time for Hudallaween!!! ← will you merely slap on a chin beard and hang a baritone around your neck and be done with instead of all the elaborate dressing up then?
  3. Erm, that's not quite right; the Czech team qualified for the play-offs, they didn't qualify directly; only the two "best" second-placed teams qualify directly, and those are either England or Poland, and either Croatia or Sweden (whoever finish second in their group). ← yes, sorry about that. This is too complicated for me to keep up with, sitting in front of a German Fernseher, where we only get this shitty friendly play between Germany and China today... ← My heartfelt condolences, that must be dreadful... ← ah, but at least it's in ARD, which means we get Günter Netzer to comment at halftime and afterwards and damn if that isn't worth a long tedious game. Lots of humourous to and fro between him and the guy who presents the blahblah. You get all these little stings between the two and then some pretty accurate, but off the wall assessments by Mr. Netzer. Just switch to ARD in 45 minutes or so and catch some of it, I'd say.

  5. The Czech team managed to secure their participation in the finals by beating Finland three to nil earlier this evening.
  6. Wolf Hudalla!
  7. the City Pulse article will not load here
  8. got it!
  9. I'd rather put it differently: the sound pretty much sucks, but you can make out the instruments... -_- ← ... but I get all excited when I listen to treasures like that. ← hey, no argument from me in that respect!

  11. doing the dishes by hand ensures you of at least one success moment a day. For all the other stuff you didn't managed to get finished and done, you at least did the damn dishes!
  12. You should note that there is a recent series of so-called TOCJ24s, 24 bit re-whatevers of the classics from the catalogue. JAW has been posting some lists here on the board, here's some search results Besides some awesome sounding ones, there are some clunkers in this series, though, like with the JRVGs. So, although they not always bring you the best obtainable sound, the earlier 16/20bit BN Works series is still the most consistent.
  13. 9 October: 1945, Count Basie records for Columbia 1954, Sal Salvador records for Capitol (Kenton Presents... ) 10 October: 1949, Elliot Lawrence and his Orchestra (feat. Gerry Mulligan) record for Columbia, later issued on various Mulligan releases 1962, Jimmy Giuffre Three records for Columbia (Free Fall)
  14. Listening to this now and it's indeed a damn good one! Grant Green has that gritty sound here, love that. Thanks for the write ups, I'll be enjoying it some more.
  15. 1952, Art Pepper records for Savoy (Surf Ride) 1956, Joe Newman records for Véga (reissued in the JiP series)
  16. the poor sod.
  17. What? No Roland Kirk? You did a good job, but I think there should be at least one gritty greasy organ with horns album on the list. Probably Back at the Chicken Shack or what have you. Also lacking: Brubeck and Kenton. Not that I would necessarily put them on a personal favourites list, but they are/were big sellers and influential. And maybe there should have been a nice Sinatra album on there as well. Still a good job!
  18. 1960, Hank Crawford - More Soul (Atlantic)
  19. It's not the best, their Frühlingsbock, which is helles, is much better. This one is good for a dark Bock though, in spite of a tad too much alcohol in the smell. Those bottles are mighty hefty, security glass or whatever, and no cans available. Posting this stuff across the pond costs an arm and a leg. Better you wrap yourself in some brown paper and send here. and BTW, Oettinger is the stuff that only the students and the assis drink. It not only costs just 40 cents a bottle, it also has very little bubbles and so you can drink it much faster than other beer. Cheap thrills!
  20. Still October and the Bock has arrived! Yummmm!!
  21. 1993, Barney Wilen - Inside Nitty=Gritty (Venus), ctd the next two days
