  1. Didn't he work quite successfully for films? I remember reading a longer piece about that years ago.
  2. Love you man, but you ... suck.
  3. Ooo - that looks good. Amazon says it doesn't have everything, but I've found a track list and will compare. Thanks very much. MG I have that one. The sound SUCKS! Beware. P.S.: I have it because I buy everything that has the name Teddy Wilson on it.
  4. Hm. What an idiot. Still, about one million people started playing drums because of him. That's all I care about. I happen to like the Police and I saw them live when they started out (in a tiny club ... what a blast that was, of fresh music) and shortly before they called it quites, with a few times inbetween. I can't recall starting to dislike someone's music just because he/she said some idiotic stuff. If that were the case, I wouldn't be able to listen to the Beatles (did anyone ever notice how much shite came spilling out of their mouths continuously) or Monk (wasn't it Monk who waved away just about any other artist in some blindfold session? ... forgive me if I got that one wrong). If I can get tickets, I'll see The Police. Just after I bought myself a bunch of ECM CDs.
  5. Lunceford! No doubt about it! Now playing a Proper box -_- Tubby Hayes 'Little Giant' Groovin' to it here as well. Some nifty stuff on there.
  6. And Ben Webster. I forgot him! Maybe because he makes me sleep at every listening Yeah, but we're talking healthy and smooooooooooooth sleeping here. And that's a good thing, ain't it?
  7. That title is an abomination. God, how I hate those "Has/Have ... Will" titles. Who came up with this idiocy that keeps rearing its ugly head again and again? And now in the NYT? Good grief. How about this from 1957: Have Gun, Will Travel: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050025/ Yeah, I know. And this. And ... I give up.
  8. And Ben Webster.
  9. If I hear Garbarek one more time ... I have one double CD plus a few single ones that are good and interesting, but that's all I'll ever need (I saw him live twice and it was the same old same old ... again). Nothing against the man, but he's got such a distinct sound and way of playing that I personally find more than one hour of his music boring. There's so much other stuff on ECM and similar labels, but Garbarek turns up again and again. Smooth jazz? ECM? Yeah, some of it ... although my definition of smooth jazz seems to be quite a different one when compared to just about anything I get from ECM.
  10. That title is an abomination. God, how I hate those "Has/Have ... Will" titles. Who came up with this idiocy that keeps rearing its ugly head again and again? And now in the NYT? Good grief.
  11. Just noticed (I never looked before): The last shipments from Caiman D.C. came from Auckland, New Zealand? Not that I care. I've ordered so much cheap stuff from them when compared to the regular prices that I've saved enough for my luxury trip this upcoming summer.
  12. "Easy Lover"? Wasn't that belted out by that castrate? Can castrates belt?
  13. No, I'm NOT going to post an Oscar Peterson video here. NOT.
  14. That one sounds like a winner.
  15. Hey, you should listen to "Bohren & Der Club of Gore." That'll get 'ya. From some dude on Amazon.com: "From the first cymbal splash to the last echo of falling raindrops, Bohren will have your heart inside of a David Lynch late night bar, smoking heavily as you watch the foreign temptress on stage try to seduce you..The atmospherics are heavy and bleak on this bands sound, however this is contradicted by the minimalistic, lush playing of the trio, offering a musical paradox in a way, the beauty of darkness...The sound does become a little repetivive and gimmicky when the formula is blatantly repeated a few times throughout, but for the most part you will be too immersed in the noir feel of it all to even notice..Perfect for stormy nights of quiet desperation.." [basically, sic]
  16. I'm always so damn late. I just received the "Jazz paa Svenska" and "Jazz pa Ryska" expanded editions a few weeks ago although I had planned to order these literally as soon as they came out (see my posts somewhere above in this thread) ... (Edit: Oops, I even started this thread). If the sonic improvement on those two is any indication , the new one should be equally worth it. I'll probably get it next year if my past ordering history is anything to go by. Volkher
  17. Lol No suprise really, that ECM is getting trashed here. There's too much European sentiment and not enough of that clanky RVG sound. There's not much on ECM that tickles my fancy, but there is plenty also today (Tomasz Stanko, Tord Gustvasen, etc.) to make it worth (some of) my money.
  18. It's certainly one of the best ECM recordings. Besides that, the cover is nicer.
  19. I'm always amazed about how old (-fashioned) some of you guys are.
  20. I know where Brownie is coming from and ECM has been a bit pretentious lately, so no duel needed there, I believe. I think Manfred would pick a Macintosh mono block or two (hey, they could be Chewy's headstone). Chewy, what's your weapon of choice? A boom box?
  21. Duh. It's the music, not the label, the sound, the catalog or whatever. ECM has had some tremendous releases as well as some real clunkers. Like every label. And if I look at some of the labels like Verve with their asinine release policy (do they actually have one aside from keeping all the good stuff under lock and key [or putting it online ... yuck] and remixing it into some volatile slime), I'm glad that ECM is around.
  22. Hold it, hold it. That one's got my old theme song from way back when ...
  23. I'm not a Rod Stewart fan at all (!) but I have to admit that I really like his work on the two first Jeff Beck LPs, "Truth" and "Beck-Ola" (1968 and 1969).
