  1. In my country lowering the standards seems to be easier than a realignment of the educational system. Therefore, it has never been easier getting a high school diploma and entering university .. and that's where the problems then start. Payin g teachers more is not going to help much, if at all. What JSngry wrote above pretty much also sums it up for our educational system here (or anywhere else, I would think, minus one or two countries here or there). Unfortunately, it is utopian thinking. Sad.
  2. I have seen them in several Paris stores. Some stores have them available for around €7. I have also seen them on sale for around €10! I meant the shop described above. This Membran series is all over the place by now.
  3. If you live in Germany, there's a shop run by physically and mentally challenged people in Hamburg ( http://www.cd-lp-dvd.de/ ) that sells these for 7 Euro each. No postage if your order is above 30 Euro. They are not a full-scale online shop, but I've tried to support them in the past. Link to the series: Membran Series I have no idea if they sell outside of Germany, but I don't think so ... or it might be a lot more expensive. Firmly tongue in cheek, the organization behind this shop calls itself "Wackelpeter" ("Jello") in reference to some of the shakes, wobbly movement etc. that the employees or office workers have to live with. They are a great bunch of people and I try to drop by the shop whenever I'm in Hamburg. For many working there it was the only place to find a job and they try their damn best to help their customers. P.S.: Because they simply can't compete with any of the bigger chains, they only have some of the budget series and sometimes a really odd assortment of products. As far as I can recall, they only have the Membran/Documents/TIM cheapo series ... but they also sell them cheap.
  4. Yep. Same problem here in Germany.
  5. I was stupid enough to add two Stax Vol. 2 to my basket without reading/noticing the fact in I don't know how many "are you sure that is what you want" windows and e-mails. Duh. Duh. Duh.
  6. "Virtual Personal Network" Oops, yes, that must be it. I also use a VPN (IPsec ... whatever that means) client to (also) go through a university server. I've been connecting through these so often that I disabled their icons in the tray (and forgot about them). Duh, I'm not the tech-geek.
  7. Naaaah. The members here are the sweetest, kindest and most open-minded users on the planet. Really. I kid you not.
  8. What's a VPN. Sth with Personal Network?
  9. Because everyone here gets around a lot ... Some months ago I decided to leave a forum which I had been a member of for several years. The reason: too many provocative "free speech" issues that basically soured the atmosphere. Some days later I was invited to a private and hidden forum with over 60,000 members. I guess I was invited because many former members of forum A had disappeared to forum B (as I then found out). When I try to find this forum through the usual search engines, I don't find a single reference, which I find more than astonishing considering the large number of users. Now my question (please without any links or references): Are you aware of any other forums (aside from various porn forums or discussion groups I'm sure exist in such privacy) such as this one ... huge, invisible and private? I'm just generally interested. I'm surprised that there isn't a single reference on Google or Yahoo, although I'm sure there must be disgruntled users or some accidental mentions out there somewhere. Still, nothing. I wonder how you can "disconnect" such a huge undertaking from the rest of the Internet (this thing runs on phpBB2, btw).
  10. This is just sickening. Really.
  11. Bargain price. GREAT box. You can't go wrong with this one. The book is worth the price of admission alone! Get it ... quick!
  12. They're touring again ... Here are the dates for Germany (+ 2 in Switzerland), the southern/south-western leg of their tour: 14.03.2006 Frankfurt (D) , Mousonturm 16.03.2006 Lugano (CH) , Radiosaal 17.03.2006 Heidelberg (D) , Karlstorbahnhof 18.03.2006 Gschwend (D) , Musikwinter 29.04.2006 Kaiserslautern (D) , Kammgarn 05.05.2006 Allensbach (D) , Gnadenkirche 07.05.2006 München (D) , Unterfahrt 09.05.2006 Zürich (CH) , Moods 10.05.2006 Karlsruhe (D) , Tollhaus 11.05.2006 Stuttgart (D) , Theaterhaus
  13. Just keep your CD-Rs warm and you won't have to worry about disk bearings. I've so far experienced the death of 5 drives in my PC life (which has been a long one). As far as I understand it, bearings effect the harddisk lifespan but not the accuracy of saved files. ************************ It's always a good idea to backup your HD to another one. I've started using 200 or 300 GB USB HDs which are cheaper for me in the longrun. I don't need to spend hours burning stuff and I don't have to use tons of valuable shelf space for CD-Rs. So, I've set up a chain of three disks for my HD backup. If one of the USB drives fail, I've got two more. The initial investment is a bit stiff, but once you got it setup, you just have to dish out a relatively small amount when a USB drive fails. So far, all three have been without error. These three disks are for my important and main production files. I have more for my music. I was lucky enough to get some Samsung Spinpoints (250GB) at totally discounted prices and had money in the bank. Since I've started using USB HDs I haven't looked back and haven't got a worry in the world anymore whereas before I always (!) had some backup CDRs that failed when needed.
  14. Another 40 Euro gone. Thanks, Tjobbe, for reminding me to look over there ... sth I hadn't done for quite a while.
  15. I don't need the search function to find the political forum. I re-read the beginings of the thread and it still looks like the thread was moved and then Chris stopped posting for a few days. How does Dan know he left? Does he post with his broadband connection and then watch the political forum with a dial up connection on another machine? What I meant was that you can use the search function to find out who posted what & when. That way you can see who left for how long and when he/she started posting again. Simple, really..
  16. Try the search function. It can do amazing things (if you know how it works).
  17. This is political? I think some people on this board have one or more screws loose.
  18. Just wanted to wish everyone Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year before I'm off to see the family for the holidays. No PC in sight, but plenty of good food and lots of stiff drinks awaiting my tired and depleted old body. All the best to all of you and see you all in 2006! Cheers!
  19. This is beginning to be a sorry thread.
  20. I have both. They are cornerstones of my collection. Run!
  21. Very sad news. I was at his anniversary concert as well that time. What I enjoyed most were his jam sessions at La Fontaine. Always crowded to the max, always tons of fun.
  22. We've probably had this one already ... if not ... do some real wild soloing yourself. http://www.guitarshredshow.com/
  23. Got both of mine today. Fine price as well if it weren't for the stupid 7 Euro 60 shipping (for goddam what? Transporting it a few kilometers to my place?) plus stupid extra taxes. God, Europe sucks at times.
