  2. John Scofield will be playing Antone's on October 9th, for anyone interested. Appears to be the "Ray Charles Project", following his last release, though I'm not sure who will be actually in the touring band this go round. ...and is that Mori/Parkins & Jordan/Fielder/Parker thing coming to Austin?

    Jim Hall

Time for an update. Just got back from a week's vacation in Austin, Killeen (?!), and Houston with the kids, before school starts back up on Monday. Before I left, I had found another copy of "Something Special", online, from a small mom & pop type place in Tuscon. Ordered it, but while browsing their website, discover that the owner is none other than Harvey Brooks, the bassist who played on Miles' Bitches Brew, Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited, and the Doors' Soft Parade! I sent an email to him asking a few questions (like one prompted by his write-up on allmusic.com suggesting he played on Simon & Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence" single) but haven't received a response yet. Also mentioned I was a big fan of Bitches Brew. Well, the Hall disc arrived in the mail while I was gone (it's an original, with colored cover unlike the previous Jazz Heritage disc I purchased). And with the disc is a postcard sized picture of Miles Davis, signed by Harvey. Kinda cool!!! The guy who played on "Like a Rolling Stone"!
  4. I would buy the chair, if it reclined (but doesn't rock). And if it were blue or khaki colored.
  5. And you can buy that Alternate Takes disc separa......
  6. ok, so Couw beat me to the punch, while I was hunting down track information. Slow down and leave something for the rest of us to post, John!!
  7. The Ah Um & Dynasty discs in the 3 disc box set are the same as the ones you can purchase individually, I believe. They are the '98 remasters. They include the unedited versions of some of the original tracks, as well as bonus tracks. If you only have the two individual remastered cds, you're missing the material on the bonus disc. The box set also includes an additional disc of material that is not on the two album discs: Ah Um: 1. Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul 2. Goodbye Pork Pie Hat [unedited] 3. Boogie Stop Shuffle [unedited] 4. Self-Portrait in Three Colors 5. Open Letter to Duke [unedited] 6. Bird Calls [unedited] 7. Fables of Faubus 8. Pussy Cat Dues [unedited] 9. Jelly Roll [unedited] 10. Pedal Point Blues [bonus Track] 11. GG Train [bonus Track] 12. Girl of My Dreams [bonus Track] Dynasty: 1. Slop [unedited] 2. Diane 3. Song With Orange [unedited] 4. Gunslinging Bird [unedited] 5. Things Ain't What They Used to Be [unedited] 6. Far Wells, Mill Valley 7. New Now Know How 8. Mood Indigo 9. Put Me in That Dungeon 10. Strollin' [bonus Track] Bonus Disc: 1. Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul [Alternate Take] 2. Bird Calls [Alternate Take] 3. Jelly Roll [Alternate Take] 4. Song With Orange [Alternate Take] 5. Diane [Alternate Take] 6. New Now Know How [Alternate Take]
  8. Happy Birthday Lon! I'd buy ya some Amy's if I were up there right now!
  9. Futher down here in South Texas, I hear "all y'all" quite often. Tangentially related seems to be "who and who". A number of my friends (curiously more the hispanic ones than "anglo") use that. "I went to a party last night." "Oh? Who and who was there?" Meaning, tell me everyone's names...all y'all who were at the party! edit - actually, it sounds like "who'n'who"....LOL
  10. Okay, I caught a link to this over at the SH Forums, but it's too funny not to share here. Some screen shots from Star Wars III, with subtitles that were translated into Chinese and back out of Chinese, or something. Star Wars III - Backstroke of the West
  11. For those of you who have been wondering how the Dolphins were able to get Ricky Williams back to the game, look no further:
  12. Thanks for the heads up on this sale! I've gone and ordered: Clusone Trio - An Hour with... Cecil Taylor - It is in the Brewing Luminous Mat Maneri - So What? I can also give a thumbs up to the two Blakes, the Douglas Tiny Bell Trio, the Giuffre/Willisau, the Koglmann/Konitz, and the Lacys. Dang, more of the titles are looking good to me now, may have to go back for more!

    Jim Hall

So, I've been looking for a Hall CD titled "Something Special" for a while now. It's a 1993 trio recording, with Larry Goldings on piano, and Steve Laspina on bass. Also has a cool cover drawn by Gary Larson Well, turns out it's a little more difficult to find that I had expected. But a copy finally shows up on half.com for a great price, and I snatched it up last week. The package arrives today, and I tear into it, only to find that it's a Jazz Heritage disc. Meaning the cover is a black & white reproduction of the original art. Wouldn't have been that big a deal, except now that I have something that feels kind of "inferior" it bothers me. I guess in the big scheme of things this isn't tha big a deal, because it's the music that matters, right?

and here.... There are a number of threads related to specific artists as well - Hutch, Burton, Stefon Harris, Tjader, etc.
  16. That was indeed beautiful, Conrad. Your mother is very lucky to have had a son like you as well. My kids and I will include you in our prayers tonight.
  17. I purchased a Trek 1400 in 1991, best bike I ever owned. At the time it was their high-end aluminum frame bike, with the 2300 being the next step up, and composite framed, which at the time was new, high tech, and MUCH more expensive. I still ride it when time permits. Used to do the twice-annual ride around Corpus Christi Bay (Bay Trek and Island Breeze), which amounted to about a 75 mile loop. Alot of fun, plus alot of great water views, and a short ferry ride from Aransas Pass to Port Aransas. I'd love to get back into cycling more seriously, and check out some of the newer Treks. I pick up their catalog still each year, and see all the upgrades and things, and just drool. They make good bikes - you won't go wrong with them on that 1500, IMO.
  18. More cowbell? Nahh, old hat now. What BOC needs is more guitar!!
  19. Another point about Popovich is that he's been the GM of that team too, from 94-2002. So in effect he was the one who put that talent together, in addition to coaching it to three championships. Brown comes in and takes an existing roster and makes it do things it couldn't previously.
  20. I think my brain just exploded! ps - disregard the Armenian.
  21. Bettye with David Ruffin & Isaac Hayes edit - according to her website, she'll be playing the Austin City Limits Festival in September, for anyone in the Austin/Dallas area interested...
  22. Listened to "That's What I Say" a few more times recently. I'm still mixed on this one. It's fun to listen to, but not really a Scofield album. Might have been more interesting if it had been all instrumental, no vocalists involved. The vocal tracks aren't bad at all, just gives it a "various artists tribute" feel, instead of a cohesive album. I guess whether this one was pushed on him by the honchos or not, at least Scofield is still trying different things with each release. Gotta give him some props for that. ...did I mention it's a fun album? Looking forward to the next real Scofield album.
  23. Sure enough. And we panned the drums hard right. ← Is that right as you face your tv, or right as you face your sofa?
  24. Taking a Stand by Jay Mohr Posted July 26, 2005 "I'm a holdout" = "I'm a jerk" Two years ago, shortly before the playoffs began, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers did something that caught us all off guard. They deactivated, and later traded, wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson. Apparently the Glazer brothers had had enough of what New Yorkers were well aware of four years earlier: Keyshawn wants the damn ball. After averaging 76 catches a year with the Jets, the former first-round stud complained his way out of the biggest market in football and into the lap of the Bucs. "Meyshawn" averaged two fewer catches a season in the same amount of time with his new club. Now with the Dallas Cowboys, Keyshawn has quick slanted his way from probable Hall of Famer to reliable possession receiver. The release of Keyshawn seamed to get the ball rolling for the shifting of power from athletes to GMs and owners in the constant battle for leverage. With a single pink slip, the Buccaneers may have fortunately ushered in the era of "Don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya" when it comes to spoiled athletes. If we fast forward to this current off season, Keyshawn by comparison to his fellow wideouts looks almost altruistic. Everyone this side of China is well aware that Terrell Owens is the greatest wide receiver today. But apparently when it comes to renegotiating his contract, Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffery Lurie has two words for T.O.: Big Deal. Owens did not attend voluntary workouts earlier this year after Lurie told anyone who would listen that Terrell was most certainly not going to receive one red cent more than his current contract dictated. Mr. Lurie, I think I speak on behalf of every football fan not living in Philadelphia when I say "Thank you." I apologize to Mr. Owens. I realize how hard it must be to live on $49 million. Ol' Terrell must have been having an off day when he thought $49 million for seven years was a fair and profitable deal. Unfortunately, there are no mulligans when it comes to pro football contracts. If there were, Green Bay receiver Javon Walker would be re-teeing his ball as we speak. The Packers are telling Walker not to check his mailbox for more money anytime soon. The 27-year-old Walker is currently earning $500,000 to play 16 football games. Alas, Javon needs more dough, so he also, is a no-show. There is little doubt that both receivers will eventually return to their teams and contribute. But is so much needless public posturing worth the respect and goodwill they lose with football fans everywhere? I say no. After watching Owens at the Super Bowl last year I became a huge fan. Now, after his holdout, I just think he's a jerk. I never had much of an opinion of Walker at all, but now, he, too, is a jerk. I have an idea I would like to extend to Terrell, Javon and the rest of the holdouts this off season. How about investing some faith in yourself. If these guys really think they are underpaid, why shouldn't they simply rely on their hard work and abilities to ensure that teams have no choice but to pay them more money? My hat is off to all owners who are not caving into spoiled athletes who, let's face it, will never be satisfied. Hopefully the message sent to other ingrates will be heard loud and clear: "Get your ass to work!"
  25. I think it's an illegal AEC bootlegging operation, personally...
