I know it wasn't the focus of your question, but you might try the Dave Holland Big Band recording that came out in '02, "What Goes Around". He expanded his quintet into a 13 piece group, and the album is really enjoyable. The tunes are all re-recorded versions of songs from the quintet, and done well. Just a thought, and maybe an entryway into his music? edit - I believe a new big band recording is due out shortly as well...

Caught a few minutes of this also. Flip and George Carlin were newscasters and doing a GREAT job - as good as the classic bits from the SNL news skits. What was it about Flip and dressing in drag?

Great photos, Mark! Wish I had been there. It looks like you had a great vantage point. Did you happen to get a picture of Rachel? I'm assuming she was in the front row for the show. Glad to see the positive feedback on EnRoute as well! This one will be making my year end favorite list. -Erik

I bought a copy of "Terrapin Station" on vinyl in about 1980/81, and loved it. But most of the rock-n-roll I liked at the time was a little heavier, so I didn't follow it up and check out the earlier recordings. I just kept going back to that one everytime I wanted my fix of the Dead. Then a couple of years ago I picked up the Arista compilation and enjoyed it as well. A little voice inside me kept telling me to explore further, but it seemed overwhelming, to be honest - between all of the studio recordings, the live stuff, and the subsequent archival live recordings. But earlier this year I was able to nab a copy of the WB/Rhino box set for a good price, and have really been surprised at the quality of the music!! I've been enjoying all of those albums - great sound, great bonus tracks, and great book that came with the set. Could kick myself for not exploring their music earlier. I want to digest this box further, before exploring all of the live recordings. I just saw where they recently released another archival live recording, "Rockin' the Rhein", a 3 disc set from the '72 European tour. Looks like a good package.

Astros picked up Carlos Beltran from KC a few days ago. They've been in a bad slump, so hopefully this will help provide their offense a bit more punch. It's a pretty good hitting lineup, on paper at least: Biggio Bagwell Beltran Berkman Kent Ensberg Everett Ausmus Pitcher Clemens has been pitching very well overall, so if Pettitte can get back to form, I think they've got everything they need to make a run back towards the top of the NL Central. Just gotta start DOIN' IT.

Welcome Back, mjzee! Thought you were lost in the electrons somewhere. Stick around and contribute - this is the best jazz bulletin board around nowadays!

I think Claude needs to buy a larger swimsuit! We have a word for that condition down here in South Texas - "pulpe" (not sure if I'm spelling that right)...

Alexander - You sure you're doing a Google Image search? And this guy has claimed "my" website - Erik Lundgren's website At least he likes jazz and bicycles! And he has some noble goals: * The development of civilisation * Harmony * The joy of life * Strengthening creativity * Promotion of world curiosity
-
Grey - Sent you a PM. And welcome back as well! -Erik

Just out of curiousity, I did a google image search on my own name (Erik Lundgren). Got a couple of interesting images to come up. ...anyone else get any interesting images when they do a google? PS - None of those are me - dig that guy's hair!

I am reading this right (hopefully?) - do you have the Bar Talk CD available for sale? Yours eagerly, Erik

Peggy Lee - A Hard Day's Night 5. Bud Shank - Michelle 6. Bobby McFerrin - Drive My Car 7. Gil Goldstein - In My Life 8. Grant Green - I Want to Hold Your Hand 9. Jackie & Roy - Lady Madonna 10. Bud Shank - Girl 11. Nancy Wilson - And I Love Him 12. Stanley Turrentine - Here There & Everywhere 13. Jazz Crusaders - Hey Jude 14. Mel Torme - She's Leaving Home 15. Bud Shank - Hello Goodbye 16. Grant Green - A Day in the Life This one is from 1994 (though there's also a "96.2.22" date on the back, not sure what that means). But it's another comp of BN and non-BN stuff, and it's got Bud Shank all over it The disc & packaging have the BN logo on them, as well as "Jazz Super Now", whatever that is.

Who's the greatest innovator in jazz today?
Aggie87 replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Dave Douglas might be worth a mention, though he's a younger generation than most that have been named already. Taking a look at his body of work as a whole, and he's been very creative, the quality of the music is pretty good, and he's not afraid to try all sorts of different things - electric Miles, string quartet, his Tiny Bell trio, etc. -
What Would Like To Listen to While You Die?
Aggie87 replied to Alexander's topic in Miscellaneous Music
...go for the version on grayfolded, which will get you a 103 minutes of Dark Star (spliced together by John Oswald). -
Aren't these basically the same thing as the 3" cd-singles that were sold back in the mid/late '80's (minus the ring tones)? I remember a Springsteen "Chimes of Freedom" mini CD that I had, that used to go for some relatively big bucks. And I believe there were a number of Beatles singles that were re-issued in this format as well. Seems like a desperation move, and definitely not anything new, IMO.

Sorry 'bout that, Rainy! Kept getting some error message each time I posted, so I wasn't sure it went through. I've deleted the reposts. Of course, it could just look like I REALLY REALLY want these discs edit: I went to the trouble to line up all the leader/titles in columns, and then this software just goes back and "smushes" them together!

What Would Like To Listen to While You Die?

I like your choice, Alexander. Not sure what I'd pick, but that would definitely be a strong contendah. Just curious though - since you're atheist, is that some sort of bet-hedging at the last minute? -
Happy Father's Day to Organissimo Dads
Aggie87 replied to maren's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'll join in on the thanks as well, Maren! I hope everyone had a great day yesterday, and I wish the best for you and your father, Kevin. I had my kids this past week, and it was a wonderful time. They woke up early yesterday (actually, they wake up early every day! ), but told me I had to stay in bed until they were ready for me to come out. They colored some pictures for me, and my six year old got out some cereal & milk, and had them ready for me at the table Took 'em to church, and then to the restaurant of THEIR choice (McD's), and then went swimming. All in all, couldn't have asked for a better day!
