  1. Just recently picked this one up, and have been listening to the Scofield/Mangelsdorff tracks. Very interesting duet, electric guitar & trombone; I'm not sure I've heard that combination before. They do Mangelsdorff's "The Eternal Turn-on", Scofield's "Gray and Visceral", and then a version of "Alfie's Theme", for a total of about 30 minutes. Worth checking out if you happen to stumble across it anywhere.
  2. I like both of the Gypsy Project albums alot! Is that new one, "Move", available yet? And I also enjoy the "Front Page" release,l which is a trio recording with Dominique DiPiazza and Dennis Chambers, and guests John McLaughlin on one track. I'm not sure whether it's ever had a U.S. release though. He also did some fusiony stuff (ok, we can call it rock) with Jaco on the Jazzpoint label. I have some of these recordings, which Jazzpoint released as two-fers a couple of years ago, and are still available on their website. They're fun to pull out and listen to from time to time, but aren't the best of either Bireli or Jaco. I prefer the Gypsy Project stuff and the Standards album as well. This one includes "Live in Italy", and "Honestly". This one includes both the "Heavy N Jazz" album and "Stuttgart Aria".
  3. Indeed, my thoughts and prayers are with you, your wife, and Zora as well. Stay strong!
  4. PM'd ya back, Tom. Thanks, Erik
  5. Well, I'm just starting to discover Bjork, so I'm a latecomer to her music. I've noticed enough references to her between Jason Moran and Greg Osby that I decided to nab her greatest hits disk. Found myself really enjoying it, so I just picked up her most recent, Medulla. She's definitely got her own way of phrasing things, and her own way of singing in general, I suppose, but there seems to be something of substance there. It's quite interesting, and primarily a vocal only album, with some percussion. While browsing, I noticed another album of hers, entitled Gling Glo. Based on the Amazon write-ups, it appears to be Bjork, backed by a jazz trio. Does anyone have this one, and if so, is it actually jazz? I'm almost curious enough to get it anyway. What other older Bjork (or even Sugarcubes) albums are worth checking out?
  6. Art Blakey - Free For All Joe Henderson - In N Out James Brown - Soul on Top
  7. While this isn't a jazz magazine, it is one I have been picking up when I see it. It purports to care about "good" music, regardless of style. Granted, it's somewhat corporate, but what isn't these days. I think their intent is good (or they're fooling me, which ain't too hard to do). Anyway, I found a couple of interesting things on their year end best of lists. Top 20 Albums of 2004: 1. U2 - How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb 2. Wilco - A Ghost is Born 3. Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose 4. Rilo Kiley - More Adventurous 5. Steve Earle - The Revolution Starts Now 6. Bjork - Medulla 7. Prince - Musicology 8. Norah Jones - Feels Like Home 9. Tom Dowd & The Language of Music ...I was glad to see the Don Byron album up there! And how the new U2 album can be the best of 2004 when it hasn't even been released kind of confuses me, but oh well. And ya gotta like any list in 2004 that includes Sun Ra!!
  8. um........ "users"?????
  9. "...He was born a pauper to a pawn on a Christmas Day When the New York Times said God is dead And the war's begun Alvin Tostig has a son today And he shall be Levin And he shall be a good man..."
  10. If you don't mind me asking, what is it about Stephen Baldwin you didn't like? Was it his character in the movie or the guy as an actor? I'm not sure what it is about the Baldwin family that you stateside guys don't like but I remember that bit on the South Park movie where their houses got bombed by the Canadians. Not sure if this was intended as an irreverent aside though. You noticed that Baldwin abuse by Stone/Parker? Check out what they do to Alec in Team America!!
  11. According to Trey Anastasio's website, he spent a week working with Herbie Hancock, John Patitucci, Steve Jordan, Cyro Baptista, and Jennifer Hartswick cutting a track for Herbie's next album. Anyone know when this album is due to be released?
  12. Okay, did all of the Yes musicians play in Lord of the Rings? ....I know, I know, too much time on my hands today!
  13. A guy on my local talk radio just predicted it would be 6-6 in the 9th, and Jose Vizcaino would hit a two-run shot to win it.
  14. 7/4 - My copy is the German edition, I don't know if yours is or not, or whether that may be the difference. Also I just remembered another oddity, not a packaging thing so much, but I recently bought a copy of Mark Bingham's "I Passed for Human" CD, which came out in the late 80's, and included John Scofield, John Zorn, and a couple others. Packaging was fine, disc looked "correct", but the music that played when I put it on was some late 80's rap music. Really bad, too LOL!
  15. I REMEMBER THE DAY PHIL COLLINS KILLED HIMSELF. HEHE THAT WAS COOL AND STUFF. I DON'T REMEMBER THE EXACT DAY HE TURNED GENESIS INTO A PILE OF CRAP, THOUGH. edit: NO REPLY AT ALL, PLEASE. B-)
  16. That sort of reminds me of Radiohead's "Kid A" album from a couple years ago. Turns out if you removed the clear tray, there was an extra 12-14 page booklet hidden in there, instead of just a printed back tray card. But it pretty much escaped detection just at a glance. I don't know if this was just done for the first pressings, or if they're still doing it today...
  17. ...Cleveland traded disgruntled wide receiver Quincy Morgan yesterday to Dallas, for disgruntled wide receiver Antonio Bryant. LOL I don't know too much about Morgan, but I think Bryant has more upside, and is a few years younger. If he can screw his head on straight and now throw his jersey in Butch Davis' face, Cleveland should get the better of this deal!
  18. The other day I finally got around to purchasing some generic cd jewel cases, in order to replace broken case/tray parts in collection. I had a number of cases that got cracked or ended up with missing "teeth" in the tray during my move from Germany to Texas last year, and have been slowly replacing the bad ones as I listen to things here and there. So earlier today I gave a listen to the Rypal/Vitous/DeJohnette disc from ECM: I noticed the black/brown tray was missing most of it's teeth, and while I was replacing the tray with a new one, discovered the following image on the inside of the back paper insert (whatever you call that - u card maybe?) I have no idea why this is there - it has no apparent connection to the music itself that I can determine. It reminds me of a cigarette ad or something So I'm guessing this is some sort of recycling thing that ECM does/did on some of their discs? Anyone else ever noticed something similar, or any other unusual packaging oddities?
  19. Hey, I picked mine up earlier this year for $90 when a store was going out of business. It was used, but 50% off their reg. used price. I was debating for a while whether to get it, and got lots of comments about it from this crew at the time, but am now glad I did! Never realized it went for that much, but I'm not planning to sell it anyway. Thanks to everyone who knocked some sense into me. You got a great deal, tatifan.
  20. I've got my eye on that new Clerks X 3-disc set. Anybody else picked this one up yet, and if so, any comments? Sorry if it's already been mentioned, i haven't read this thread in a while... Looks to have the theatrical release, the original cut film fest cut, and a disc of all sorts of other stuff...
  21. Clemens didn't look real good yesterday, but the offense came through for the Astros. Oswalt's on the hill this afternoon. It would be great for them to take another win at Atlanta, and come back to Houston for the 3rd game. I don't know how far they can go with only two solid starting pitchers, but I'd still like to see the Atlanta curse end, and for them to win a postseason series for once...
  22. Just noticed: Greg Osby - Public Sonic Youth - Sonic Nurse
  23. you sure about that??
  24. Anybody pick this one up yet? I'm eyeing it, but haven't pulled the trigger. It's a live solo album, mainly covers, with a 20 minute version of "Paranoid Android". I'd be curious to hear any first impressions...
  25. Astros actually pulled it out and nabbed the wild card! Clemens is up first on Wednesday, followed by 20 game winner Oswalt. I hope they can finally solve the curse they seem to have when playing the Braves in the postseason. I'd also like to see them re-sign Beltran in the offseason. I know he was brought it to for the sole purpose of making the playoffs, but it would be great to see them rebuild around Berkman and Beltran, keeping the Killer B theme intact. And it would be great to see Clemens come back for one more year, after doing so well.
