A new Tommy Smith album has just come out, titled "Evolution". This one has a solid lineup - Scofield, Lovano, John Taylor, Patitucci, and Stewart. Anybody heard this yet? This is the third Smith album that Scofield has played on, none of which I've purchased yet. How are Smith's releases? Any fans here? edit - apparently this is a re-release (?) of a 2003 recording. Just found the old Tommy Smith Evolution thread. Thought it sounded familiar!!

I just received the Bad Plus live cd today, and finished listening to it. It's very interesting, and (to me) follows their last two releases fairly well. I find them interesting, but not in a groove-y or swinging way at all. I see them as an instrumental piano trio, not a traditional jazz piano trio. I don't really care about labels anyway , I suppose. The Queen cover didn't do much for me, but the rest of the disc is fun, exploring music. It's got similar dynamics to their other releases, so it's got more of a "rock" feel to it I suppose.

I hope you stick around Ted, it's a fascinating place! There are some very good people here, from all ends of just about any spectrum you can envision. Most of us seem to be pretty consistent in our comments, statements, responses, etc (i hope i can include myself in that!!). I can get a sense of who Jazzmoose, Jazzbo, and Jazz Kat are, just by being here and being involved, as much as I get a sense of who people are who are using their real names as their identities - like Chuck, Peter Johnson, and Kevin B. And I can definitely see consistent arguments/stances between Johnny E. and Weizen, though one uses his name and the other uses a pseudonym. I don't get the sense that anyone's statements are held to different standards due to their logon "handle". I've traded, purchased and/or sold cd's with a number of folks here, and have known many of them through this bulletin board and the previous ones for over 4 years. I just recently stuck my first name down at the bottom of my posts, but never tried to hide it from anyone. I think you'll enjoy it here if you give us a chance!

Assuming you mean Pharaoh Sanders, they're the cover story in the March 05 Downbeat.

I really like Pursuance, Triology, and Songbook! All three are wonderful recordings. "Sing a Song of Song" on Songbook never fails to impress me. I like Standard of Language quite a bit better than it's sister recording, Happy People, though the Bobby Hutcherson tracks are nice on that one. I also think both Black Hope and African Exchange Student, which are earlier recordings, are worth checking out. I agree with you Mark, I'd like to see Kenny release a live recording as well! Though he can be heard live on "A Dreyfus Night in Paris", with Marcus Miller, Michel Petrucciani, Bireli Lagrene, and Lenny White. And he's also on Miles' "Live Around the World, I think - don't have that one. -Erik
