  1. Happy Birthday Ron!
  2. Wow, would love to see that Escovedo/Hidalgo show! Are they playing together on stage, or separately, but only playing the other's songs?
  3. Ended up going to the show last night, and it was fantastic! Alejandro Escovedo opened, and played for about 45 minutes - too short for my tastes. The band was two acoustic guitars, bass & drums. It was a great set, touching on some new tracks from his latest album (Big Station) back through some of his early tracks. I wish he'd pass through here as a headliner, like to hear a much longer set. Prine came out after a 30 minute intermission, with a bassist and another guy who was mainly a guitarist but played a few other instruments as well. His set lasted 2 1/2 hours, which surprised me, given the cancer he battled. He was definitely "on", talking about how he wrote some of his songs, which were favorites of his mother and a recently passed brother, and about his experience playing brothers in a movie with Billy Bob Thornton. Thoughout all of his stories there was a sense of humor, and you could tell he really enjoyed what he was doing, and appreciated being there. He played some of the songs mentioned above, as well as some that were clearly some of his biggest hits - Sam Stone, Jesus the Missing Years, Bear Creek Blues, Angel from Montgomery, Dear Abby, Hello in There, John Garfield Blues, Clay Pigeons, and many more. Glad I went!
  4. Yep, vs. the Nats. I can't stop watching that video!
  5. Maybe the highlight of my Astros' season:
  6. Disagree. Endeavor flew over Houston on Wednesday, my brother in law took this photo from his office downtown: ...and it flew over the Capitol Bldg in Austin yesterday as well:
  7. I wonder if a SpamBot has stolen Chuck's login and posted as him..
  8. Any Prine fans on the board? Tell me about him - I really don't know any of his music, I don't think. He's one of those names I've heard mentioned over the years, but never listened to. What albums are worth checking out? What are some of his signature songs? He's playing here in town on Saturday night. Is he worth seeing live? Alejandro Escovedo is opening, and is the main reason I was interested, but I'd like to learn a bit about Prine too.
  9. That looks like a fake audience in that youtube clip.
  10. Well, they're not coming my way, but you convinced me anyway - I'm gonna check 'em out at the Blue Note in NYC on 6 Oct!
  11. The duplicates that bug me are ones like "Point me toward the top 10 jazz albums". THose are the ones I usually feel a need to point a newbie to the old threads, since the suggestions in those will invariable answer the newbie's questions, and the rest of us don't have to merely repeat ourselves again.
  12. This is what I'm doing as well, but I haven't dumped the individual old ones until the new ones are available. This series isn't going to be over until we reach the 50th anniversary at the rate they're going though. I've been extremely happy with the 40th cd/dvda sets.
  13. Happy Birthday!
  14. I feel this way too. Think I didn't fully appreciate what I was learning, nor did I fully absorb it all.
  15. For me FB and this board (or boards like this) serve two different purposes, though admittedly there is some overlap too. FB for me is for socializing with family, current and old friends, and sharing experiences with each other, including pictures, statuses, places you're visiting etc. For instance I wouldn't have known anybody visited the Far East during some major weather issues recently, unless I were their FB friend. Here, it's more opened ended discussion about specific topics, and these discussions last and evolve over time. I enjoy that, and being able to go back and look up old information on specific topics, whether they're jazz/music related or not. I'm not at the same place as everyone else with their musical interests and tastes, so I still feel like there's information I can learn even if it's a thread from back in 2004. There's definitely the social aspect here too though, woven within most of the threads, and also the old (now defunct) Live Chat (Free's a dick by the way!), and there's definitely overlap between my friends here and on FB.
  16. Happy Birthday, Bob! Wish our paths would cross again!
  17. Closer to the first game, you should be able to see who's already made their picks. Once the games have started, it usually shows you everybody's picks and where they stand for that week, live. If you click on "Picks", there should be a choice to make picks and view picks. Also, this isn't a fantasy football league where you pick players and so forth. It's strictly a "pick the winner of each game, straight up" contest. So far, we have the following members this season: Aggie87 Connoisseur series 500 Edward jazzmoose Matthew Noj Soulstation1 vajerzy Van Basten II If there are disputes or if you somehow forget to make a pick, Vajerzy is the pool manager, and should be able to help straighten things out. He does a fine job!
  18. I'm ok with keeping your board, Vajerzy. I just made my picks already! And as a reminder, Dallas and the Giants play on Wednesday night, so everyone needs to get at least that pick in earlier than normal!
  19. Can you add me as Aggie874, SS? That is my name on the old Org football pool. It won't let me log in though. edit - Just talked to vajerzy on FB. He was gonna try to set up his pool again too. I dunno if we need two, wouldnt think so?
  20. Have my pre-order in on BOC already, the other box I'm thinking about getting is the Brecker Brothers, though I'm not enamored with the way the albums were produced, if I remember how they sounded when they came out. I will also breakdown one day and get the Woody Shaw. Matthew - Where did you preorder the BOC? On Amazon UK, it can be had for 48.01 Pounds shipped to the U.S., which equates to $75.80. Do you know of a better price? I'm debating whether to preorder it at this price, or just wait and see if it becomes a special offer at some point on either Amazon or Pop Market...
  21. I'm interested too, but I think Vajerzy has to reactivate our group on CBS Sports. He seems to have shut down his FB page, so I can't get in touch with him there I don't think. Will try.
  22. Roger Clemens signing with Houston indy league team Former Astros great Roger Clemens will pitch again in the Houston area. Clemens will sign with the Sugar Land Skeeters and pitch on Saturday, according to a source close to the team. The Skeeters, an independent professional team, are a far cry from the Astros or the Yankees. Clemens, who just turned 50 years old earlier this month, last pitched in 2007 for the Yankees. Clemens is one of the most accomplished pitchers in Major League Baseball history, but he also has created his share of controversy through the years. He most recently was cleared of perjury charges that he was accused of lying to Congress about steroid use. Rest of the article is at the above link...
