I think most reasonable people believe that strength is a significant contributing factor in the distance a hit ball will travel. Thus it is a factor in the ability to hit HRs. No way around it. If you have a 98 pound weakling that can barely lift a bat, there's no way he's going to swing hard enough to put a ball over the fence. Someone with substantial muscles like Barry Bonds can easily swing hard enough to put the ball into McCovey Cove. Obviously, coordination, vision, timing, and other things are factors too, but clearly strength is a contributor. And steroids increase strength, as you admit. C'mon, be real here.

what are you drinking right now?

Glad to hear you are supporting the court finally. So if or when Bonds is found guilty, you will finally admit to what Bonds has already admitted, that he took drugs that enhanced his performance, rendering his records worthless and undefinable. And regardless whether the court finds him guilty, I stand by my statement that he will be forever guilty in the court of public opinion. I have always believed the court system needs to handle this, not the media or photoshop bullshit. However, I think the prosecution has no case and is, at this point, desperately trying to justify the colossal waste of taxpayer money by getting him on something...anything. The so-called "court of public opinion" is morally corrupt and ethically bankrupt, Aggie. That same "court" was the source of lynchings, too. You think about that. This must be a personal gripe for you, Aggie. I mean, every response you make has to be some angry commentary about what you think I believe. Yet, with a little research, you will note that I never said Bonds didn't take steroids. All I have ever said is there is no proof that he did. I have already acknowledged that he took "the clear". And, if you will further note, I have said [numerous times] that I couldn't care less if he did use steroids. Why? Because steroids do not make a player hit HRs. They just make them bigger. Tell me, if he is found not guilty, will you finally acknowledge there was no proof he ever took steroids or is this just a one sided thing with you? Hm. You completely avoided the point of my comment. Being a supporter - an advocate even - of the court, you have to accept their conclusion if Bonds is found guilty. And your powers of perception are completely off, as usual. There is no anger in any of my comments. Maybe some paranoia or persecution complex on your part, I'd guess. If he is not found guilty, that simply means the jury didn't think there was enough evidence presented to convict. Greg Anderson sitting in jail throughout the trial is convincing enough to most thinking-people to be a clear sign there is guilt on Bonds' part. Period. End of story. Steroids do in fact increase strength. Just take a look at the link I provided previously, from a credible source. You skipped right over that before. Increased strength CLEARLY helps power hitters hit the ball further, creating the potential for additional home runs. No way to deny that, for reasonable people.

Happy Birthday Bright Moments!!!

Happy Birthday -
I guess your mind is greater than the vast majority of the population then. Congratulations.

I agree that Anderson is getting paid a fine sum for his non-cooperation. But I think regardless of the outcome of the court case, in the court of public opinion Bonds is toast, forevermore.

Astros won today, so they have a better record than Boston! That would embarrass me if I were a Red Sox player.
-
That must hurt for Red Sox fans! I'm still in basketball mode after last night's Aggie championship, not ready for baseball (except Little League, where our team is half-way through our season already!)
-
They did it - Texas A&M is the National Champion! Whoop!!! A&M topped Baylor, Stanford, and Notre Dame back to back. edit - it was a much better game than the men's game last night too, IMO.

I don't believe a single person on this board except you, the Giants homer and Bonds homer, believes that steroids have no bearing on hitting HR's. Your statement therefore has to be taken into account with your inability to be non-biased as a Bonds fan. From Hugo Rivera, a certified fitness trainer and author of 8 books on bodybuilding (here): "Steroids do increase size and strength. In fact, they do so very significantly. In addition to gains in strength and muscle mass they also seem to provide you with more energy and aggressiveness, things that are conducive to good workouts (but not so in interpersonal relationships)." So since steroids add muscle mass AND strength, it is reasonable to conclude that the extra strength easily can translate into hitting a ball further than it would go without that added mass/strength. A farther-traveling ball means that at least some hits that would have only gotten to the warning track may now be able to travel over the wall for a HR. Therefore there's no way to determine how many additional HR's someone (Bonds in this case) may have hit due to his steroid use. So his record will always be in question, and IMO deserves the *.

Happy Birthday, Jeff!

They did it! They beat Stanford 63-62! Somehow they clawed their way back into the game down 10 points, at the end. Was a rough, physical game. I'm proud of this team - knocked off 2 straight No. 1 seeds in Baylor and Stanford. They can hang with anybody.

That really doesn't make sense to me. If he wants to take the record away for Bonds' use of steroids, there is at least some logic to that, whether others agree or not. But considering taking a record away based on whether Bonds is found guilty of lying doesn't really make sense. He's not on trial for steroids, but for lying. Lying doesn't seem like a reason to take a record away. Steroid use - possibly, depending on your perspective.

That's it? That's all you got?? He's in jail because he wants to say FU to the Grand Jury?? No. That's all there is. He's in jail because he refused to cooperate with the prosecution after they jerked him around. The judge subsequently held him in contempt and made him nothing less than a political prisoner. I'm real sorry if you don't like the answer, but do the research and find out for yourself, then. If he had no information that was damaging to Barry Bonds, he wouldn't be sitting in jail for attempting to say "FU" to a Grand Jury. If he knew his hero was innocent he'd be doing everything in his power to help him, which would include testifying. That would be more important to him. Since he KNOWS he has damaging information, he's sitting in jail.

Logical "proof" that he took something illegal and knew it: Greg Anderson is sitting in jail refusing to testify. If Bonds was innocent (despite the overwhelming circumstantial evidence) of the charges of lying to the Grand Jury about taking steroids, then Anderson would have no reason to avoid the trial. He'd be able to waltz right in, say he never injected Bonds with anything, or at the very least never told Bonds what he was injecting into him. That despite all the other ballplayers flocking to Anderson to get similar injections, knowing what it had done for Bonds, and all of them knowing they were asking for illegal substances. Since Anderson is refusing to testify, he obviously has information that would hurt Bonds, and doesn't want to share it. Otherwise he'd be there at the trial. He probably has a golden handshake from Bonds and is waiting and for a big payday once everything is finally over. That's his incentive. That's about enough reasonable proof to me. Also, a credible witness (Kathy Hoskings) who didn't want to testify at all, stated today that she personally saw Anderson injecting Bonds: "'This is Kathy. That's my girl. She ain't going to say nothing to nobody,"' she quoted Bonds as saying. "So Greg shot him in the belly button." Why would Bonds be worried she would say something to anybody, if he was doing something legal? Still waiting for a reasonable, logical response from Goodspeak on why Anderson's in jail, from Goodspeak's perspective.

Please explain why Greg Anderson is sitting in jail, in a realistic way that supports your argument.

SI predicts 98 losses for Houston. As an Astros fan, yet another year of not being very excited about baseball. I wish McLane would get on with selling the team to someone who's willing to turn it into a competitive program again. They drew their fewest home fans this past year since 1997 (and yet still raised ticket prices).

That's nothing - we've got flying sharks in Texas! Mako jumps in boat Fisherman Jason Kresse used no bait to make the catch of a lifetime: An 8-foot mako shark that simply jumped into the back of his boat. Kresse, of Freeport, Texas, was hoping to land some red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico when he set out early Monday. He and two crew members were spreading chum on the water when they suddenly attracted a much bigger fish: The 375-pound shark. "All of a sudden something hit the side of the boat," Kresse recounted. "He ends up landing on the back of the boat." The shark began thrashing there, with Kresse and the crew unable to get the fish back into the gulf. Hours later, after damaging the boat, the shark finally died. Once back at shore, Kresse needed a forklift to get the trophy fish off his boat. It's currently on display at a seafood business in his town, but Kresse intends to permanently memorialize his catch. "I'm going to get a mount of it," said Kresse. "A fish jumping in your boat, 400 pounds, that's unbelievable."

Why not just start a thread about your blog, and then you can update it when you add new items to the blog? Wouldn't that serve the same purpose?

You may be right about Moore. I've only seen her play once this season, so I don't have a good enough sense of her game. She's a great player obviously. My opinion of Griner is based on seeing her more frequently, and she's almost a freak of nature out there. Taller than everyone else, long armspan, and able to make shots from almost everywhere. Her game was off last night vs A&M, but I'd like to think that was because of the Aggies' defense.

Great win by A&M over Baylor in the women's tourney. A&M had lost to Baylor 3 times this season already, and Baylor had probably the best overall player in women's hoops in Britney Griner. A&M going to the Final Four for the first time ever, along with Stanford, UConn, & Notre Dame.
