Happy Birthday Upright Bill!

Nope.

Cowboys are looking pretty crappy tonight. Romo doesn't have much spark tonight, though at least he hasn't thrown an INT yet. The defense doesn't seem to know how to tackle, either. I think Wade Phillips' time in charge is winding down. I didn't like T.O. and was glad to see him go, but they don't have a good WR corps right now, either. Gave up too much for Roy Williams, who is a better #2 WR than #1. Bad decision by Jerrah, which is going to cost them a few wins this year.

Yep, Triumph has been on there. Here he is visiting Bonnaroo back in June. There are a Triumph/Tonight Show other clips on Hulu as well...

RIP Kenny. He also plays with Sco on Miroslav Vitous' "Guardian Angels". I think those are their only two recordings together. Kenny's also fine on Kenny Garrett's "Songbook".

I tend to agree with just about everything you said, take5. I'd like to see them take a left turn in their style again, like they were doing for a while. They still put on a fine concert though. I agree with Buzz about Start and Anesthetize - I also enjoyed quite a bit of The Incident live as well.

Caught the Philly show last night. I really enjoyed it. I was impressed with them playing "The Incident" straight through, though I"m not sure all of its parts hold up well live. A few were standouts, including "Time Flies". There were a couple of technical glitches with guitar cables that seemed to annoy Steven Wilson a bit, but I think they got a laugh out of it after a while. The video guitar thing was interesting - he played it during "Russia on Ice". Not sure if there were technical problems with it either, but he switched half way through the song. Setlist: The Incident -- Start of Something Beautiful Russia on Ice Anesthetize pt 2 Normal Strip the Soul/.3 Bonnie the Cat -- Sound of Muzak Trains Overall it was a great performance, though I could quibble with a few of the song choices in the second half. A few mellower songs to divide the set up would have been nice. King's X opened, and they were ok. They didn't blow me away though - most of their songs (at least live) seemed to sound the same - same aggressve sound/tone throughout. Maybe I'll check out some of their cd's to see how they come off in the studio.

Welcome back, MG. Speaking of Fela, I was in a taxicab in Philadelphia last night, and I saw the cabbie's ID - his name was Femi, like Fela's son. When we got to our destination, I said "Adupe" to him ("thank you" in Yoruban). You should have seen his jaw drop open when I said that. He looked at me and said - "Ok stop, when did you live in Nigeria??" I told him I had never been there, and his amazement deepened further. I reminded him that he was supposed to say "Ashe" or "Oshe" in return, and he started laughing. He said "you said Thank You to me in my language, and I say "You're Very Welcome" in yours". We shook hands, and he drove off with a huge smile.

That really wasn't necessary was it? Couw was a great board member run off by unpleasant encounters on this board. C'mon Allen, you can be bigger than that.

I agree too - I think Conan was edgier and funnier in NYC. He's still got the same wacky sense of humor which I enjoy, but it's tamed a little in Cali. I wonder if it's the lifestyle there, versus the Big Apple (?). Or if it's NYC corporate thinking to mellow him out. I guess the earlier audience skews a little older, so maybe NBC wants him to try to pick up some of the older audience of Jay's that are still up. I've watched a few minutes of Jay's show here and there, and am not impressed. He seems blander than ever to me.

Digression thread: Coherence is overrated

You can do it, Noj! I've gotten through it a couple of times now. I think you have to get through the first two levels with about 3:30 or more left. If you don't have that much time left, you're not likely to get through the third. If you can get through 1&2 with that much time left, there's just enough time left to get thru the last level, but you can't slow down, you just have to see everything - almost be looking at your next move while clicking on the last one still. -
It's actually not that expensive if you break it out on a per-disc basis ($230/13 = $17.70 per disc), for Japanese LP reproductions. The packaging and detail is wonderful. I bet some of you have spent more than $17.70 for Monday Michiru albums from Japan?

Dave - since you have the mono box, you don't need the stereo Yellow Submarine cd. You have all of the Beatles tracks from the original YS release already, on the mono box. They are either on their original releases or on the Mono Masters set. The only remaining music you would lack from the original YS is the George Martin orchestral music. If you want that, then get the stereo YS set. I agree with Alexander that the Yellow Submarine Soundtrack (not to be confused with Yellow Submarine) is great.

Happy Birthday, Ron! Thanks for all you bring to this board, as well as your discography efforts for Greg O.

Being crammed into tourist/economy class seats with the person in front of you a mere 8" away (or closer when they recline), and your knees banging into the seat is considered a luxury??

That's it - we put in up near Lambertville. (edit - actually a bit further north than that, maybe up near Frenchtown? I don't know exactly). That whole area of NJ is much more beautiful than what many people think of when they think NJ.

Went tubing for the first (and last) time down the Comal about a month ago...a river full of drunk obnoxious college kids and no way to avoid bumping into them as you went down the river, yes. Nice and lazy....not exactly. Maybe now that school's back in session, it might be more of what it probably really was at some point. That's a good point. I lived in San Marcos for a year back in the early 80's, and back then there weren't the numbers that there are now probably. Last time I went was when school was in session too, so it was probably a bit less crowded than in the middle of summer. (Aside - I did go tubing on the Delaware River between NJ and Pennsylvania last month, there was hardly anybody on that river, and it was beautiful - went past the area where Washington crossed the river).

Gave a couple of spins to John Zorn's newest release, O'o. It's mostly the same lineup as played on The Gift and The Dreamers, and has that same sort of loungy exotica feel to it. Ribot's nice on this one, as is Jamie Saft. Worth checking out if you like this particular style of Zorn music.

I sure hope so. This would be a first-day-available purchase for me, if it ever does come out. Not sure why Page/Plant didn't want to capitalize on this right after the show, especially with how impressive it apparently was. This is the closest thing we have right now. That's cool, hadn't seen the show set up like that, just random song clips.

Of the three, I like Austin the best. In fact, it's still my favorite city in Texas. I think living in a few other, less interesting places in Texas gives me an appreciation for what Austin offers that isn't available elsewhere. Plenty of live music whenever you want it. Beautiful hill country access. Nice lake and riverfront areas in which to play/explore. The Austin Record Convention. Nightlife along 6th Street and adjacent areas, South Congress, Guadalupe, etc. Waterloo Records (I really appreciate this store!!). Houston has very little personality to me, overall. I've got relatives that live there, and friends, and enjoy visiting them, but never really find enough things of interest to do while there. I guess there's the Johnson Space Center, which is nice, but probably not worth repeat visits. And the Natural Science Museum (and attached Butterfly Center) is well done, if you've got time and you're looking for something to do. But I can't imagine either of those things drawing in out of city/state visitors by themselves. Galveston is a 45 min/1 hr drive south, if you want beach. San Antonio is a nice, colorful city, with a fun downtown area. Good Mexican food to be found all over, plenty of small mom & pop places. The Riverwalk is interesting, despite being touristy. And the Alamo is worth a visit, obviously. Up the road in New Braunfels are the Guadalupe and Comal Rivers, both of which you can tube down, for a nice lazy day. I guess it depends on what you want to do in your spare time. If it's a variety of live music choices, Austin would be my pick.

2009-2010 NFL Pool

Cowboys have really dominated this game so far, and yet are losing 20-17 at the half, thanks to Tony Romo's two INTs and Felix Jones' fumble on a kickoff, which led to 17 Giants points. Should be a good second half! Surprised the Pats lost to the Jets today, they could easily be 0-2 at this point. edit - another Romo INT leads to another Giants TD, now they're up 27-24. Sigh.
