  1. We'll never see his like again.........RIP.
  2. Off to see Kurt Elling with The Scottish Jazz Orchestra directed by Tommy Smith tomorrow night at The Sage, Gateshead. I know there are mixed feelings about Kurt Elling here but I love his singing...very much looking forward to this.
  3. I've just finished reading this today and I must say that I'm mighty impressed with both Simon's writing style and the amount of research he must have carried out on what is obviously a labour of love. Easily the best biography I've read about a jazz musician since.... I can't remember when. Heartily recommended.... even at full price!
  4. Still waiting for the John Steven's Away albums to see the light of day on CD. They're all well worth reissuing.....
  5. I've never really understood Warne Marsh's enduring appeal to me but he is one of the few musicians whose music I can put on and immediately feel better. Lee Konitz is another one....
  6. Helluva record! Along with Medina & Spiral, the best of the Land/Hutcherson collaborations, imho. But they're ALL great. Hey -- I reviewed that album for Down Beat back in '68 or '69, gave it ***1/2. IIRC drummer Donald Bailey plays harmonica on at least one track. Phew. Tough grader! I'd give it at least 4 stars. I guess I'm biased! Lot of competition back in '68..........
  7. CDJapan shows it for a July 1 release. Thanks, Lon....Yes, I received an e-mail from them about it a few days ago.
  8. I presume all this music is on the two Mosaic sets? It is tempting though, the sound of the recent Warner reissues has been excellent and I do like to listen to complete albums rather than in recording order.

    Hum Dono

Thanks for the info, Roger. Does the "authoritive source" say whether/when these unearthed master tapes will be reissued?
  10. that Philips reissue of "100% proof" may have a poor cover but it sounds great. Way better than the domestic CD ( which I've long since ditched) Is that the CD that purports to be in stereo but is in fact mono? I remember there was some controversy about the sound of many of his re-issued CDs from Universal. I guess the masters could do with being given some TLC and reissued again. Wonder what are the chances of that happening.....?
  11. Thanks, Bev...."Pirates" isn't really my cup of tea, I'm afraid. I'll try and catch her live when and if she next plays in the north-east.
  12. Bev, which of the Laura Jurd would you recommend to start with?......I'd like to dip my toe in the water.
  13. Anyone know when this is going to be released?...no sign of it at the usual places.
  14. I wouldn't spend much on this disc. The sound is not the greatest. The Draper session is better bit the Roulette tracks leave something to be desired. I played it all the way through although i had to leave the room during the Draper solos which dragged more than just a bit. Yes, the sound is very flat on the Roulette tracks but the music is suprisingly good. I can take or leave the Draper Session.
  15. Bargain of the year.....? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Recordings-1957-1962-5Cd/dp/B00S2SYRTC/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1429854971&sr=1-1&keywords=mose+allison

Thanks, ku. Perhaps if anyone orders & receives a copy of the J.R. Monterose from Jazz Messengers they could post here...I wouldn't mind having a copy soonest.

Does this mean that Jazz Messengers actually have copies in stock whilst Amazon.uk won't get any until June?
  18. I'd certainly be very interested in having the Ran Blake's...I missed them when they came out on vinyl and they've been out of print for a long time so I would imagine they would sell pretty well. Not sure about the Roscoe Mitchell. I would buy it because it's an International Phonograph reissue but the Delmark CD is still widely available so I wonder if there would there be much of a market for another reissue...I doubt it, myself.
  19. Yes, thanks for sharing that, Chuck.
  20. Yes, very nice. It's on my "to get" list.......
