I think what probably happens is that someone at Andorran Records (or something similar) decides that the world needs a release of say, four very hard to find albums by Gigi Gryce, and carries out an internet trawl to find what is out there for free. Since most people seem to share music in mp3 format then there's a fair chance that this will be the format they'll find. They then press the music on CDs and release it for a very cheap price with minimal or no artwork. Presumably there are enough people (like me) who are interested enough in hearing the albums to make this a paying proposition. Anyway, I've just seen a copy of the Japanese Mercury CD on Amazon for a reasonable price so let's hope that one sounds OK.

It's now sold out at DustyGroove but if anyone has this CD can they confirm whether the music on it comes from mp3 or lossless sources please. The music on the very cheap box set you mention all seems to come from mp3 sources. I guess that's why it's so cheap. A complete waste of money, IMO!

I wonder why the whole concert wasn't on the Mosaic set?

Thanks for recommending this, Dan. My copy arrived this morning and it is indeed a great compilation. Sound is good and the booklet very informative, although my one minor gripe is that it does not include full details of who is playing on each track. For someone like me with only a limited knowledge of Maxwell Davis this would have been very helpful. But, hey, for the price I'm not really complaining!

Yes, I know. It was the excitement of typing it in!

As an experiment I connected my Panasonic DVD recorder/player to my hi-fi system and then used it to play some of my CDs. It played them all perfectly but sounded much thinner than when using my Arcam CD player. So I guess the Arcam player must be doing something 'good' to the output signal; there was also no way see which track was playing. So, if and when my Arcam player bites the dust, I guess I'll be replacing it with another CD player

I heard being played during an interview with Elizabeth Frazer and was knocked-out by it: Massive Attack - Teardrop

2-1, actually...and yes, a very poor performance by the Dutch team in this competition. It seems they're either 'red-hot' or 'stone-cold'.... no in-between. -
Musicians Whose Playing Has Gotten Better with Age
Head Man replied to paul secor's topic in Artists
Someone mentioned him in the earlier thread but here's my vote for Von Freeman. He seems to get better with every new album he makes. -

Rooney managed to get sent off in one of the preliminary games so has had to sit out the first two games of this tournament. He'll be back for the next game against Ukraine...le crunch! Pity you missed the second half against Sweden, that's where most of the action took place. Very exciting even if the level of footballing skill left something to be desired. If England beat Ukraine then they'll end up playing either the winner or runner-up in the Spain/Croatia/Italy group. Now that should be an exciting match. -
One of those albums you buy, play once, and put away.

There's no right or wrong in the world of opinions. Right

I've been really interested in following the debate on another thread about whether to replace CD players with DVD players and I wonder if anyone can confirm whether there's any loss in sound quality by doing this. I have an Arcam CD player which from time to time has problems reading CD-Rs but generally I'm happy with the sound of my system using this as the CD input. However I'm thinking of replacing my Panasonic DVD player/recorder with a hard disc system and therefore will have a spare DVD player that could be used to play CDs at some time in the future if and when my Arcam CD player needs replacing. Surely there must be some technology in the Arcam that is over and above that in the Panasonic....or is it all marketing hype? BTW can anyone recommend a not too pricey hard disc system for recording TV programmes/playing DVDs that is simple to use.

I'm sorry, but that cover just looks cheesy. I agree

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Head Man replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
From the Mosaic Select set. -
I never really like this art work. As a matter on interest does anyone know whether the Bobby Hutcherson album "Natural Illusions" has ever been released on CD by anyone other than Applause? The sound on that release is terrible. (Updated to include "on CD")
-
Presumably a needle-drop but whether it was done by Fresh Sound or "found" elsewhere...who knows. However it sounds pretty good to my, admittedly, "non-hi-fi" ears.

It seems that this may have received a Japanese re-issue a few years ago. There's more information on Phil Wood's forum (yes....he has his own forum!) here: Phil Woods - Live at The Showboat

A Story Tale was reissued in full on Clifford Jordan's Mosaic, which is an official release on Milestone, owned by Fantasy at the time; it also has Jordan's album Starting Time. Amazon U.K. Amazon U.S. Thanks Hans. I have that CD but had forgotten that "A Story Tale" was included on it. So...I guess I bought the double Fresh Sound CD for just the ONE album. Ah well.......

As a matter of interest I checked some other Fresh Sound releases that I have bought recently. Gene Quill - The Tiger appears to be a proper CD release Sonny Red - Quartet, Quintet, Sextet. The second album on CD1, "A Story Tale" seems to have come from mp3 sources. Since I only bought this double CD for the two albums on disc 1, this is particularly galling. Bill Barron - Quintet & Sextet. One of the albums on this set, "Modern Windows: A Jazz Suite", seems to have come from mp3 sources. Since I already have this album on Savoy this is not a problem for me. So, from this admittedly small sample, it appears the practice of using mp3 sources for Fresh Sound re-issues is pretty widespread.

Nope...got me there Get your "Baby" Ruth bars? Still don't get it, I'm afraid. Two countries........ divided by a common language

Nope...got me there

Like you said, King Ubu, these Fresh Sound releases are not cheap and although I am fairly relaxed about paying for decently mastered albums from vinyl sources I do object to paying top-dollar for music from sources we all could find on the internet. I just wish whoever has the original masters for these lovely recordings would do the job properly!
-
Ahhhh... needle drops! Although the music on this 2xCD set is uniformly excellent I'm afraid that all the tracks on CD 1 from the albums "South Side Soul" & "Nice 'n' Tasty" both show up on my CD analyzer as being from mp3 sources. So...... "Buyer Beware"!

Over such things are wars fought! or should that read "over such thing's are war's fought"? no...stop it!!!!!
