  1. Yes, it came out as one of series of albums of British Jazz on the Jasmine label some years ago. It's called 'The Jazz Couriers: The First And Last Words (JASCD 626)'. It's currently available at Amazon.
  2. Like you I bought the Charles Sullivan - Re-Entry release recently and thought it was excellent. I'd be interested in getting Genesis if I could find it for a reasonable price. Any offers anyone?
  3. Thanks for that, Dan. That probably explains why it sounds like a 'warm-up' track. Not helped, I must say, by him being backed by one of my least-favourite drummers, Al Foster!
  4. The album 'I Wanna talk About You' by Tete Montoliu on SteepleChase has Hank Mobley playing on one of the tracks - 'Autumn Leaves. The date of the session is identified as March, 22 1980 and it was recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark. The other musicians on the date are shown as George Mraz (bass) and Al Foster (drums). Does anyone know the background to this session and how Hank came to be in Denmark at this time? I didn't know Hank was still recording then.

    Archie Shepp

It's along time ago now so I can't be absolutely certain who was playing in the band. However it certainly included the two trombones of Rudd & Moncur plus Beaver Harris on drums. Was anyone else there that night who can confirm the line-up?

    Archie Shepp

Yes, that's what I did mean. Can you imagine Miles ever agreeing to play with a back-up band!

If you go to the Marge/Futura website at: Futura/Marge Records you can listen to the whole of one of the tracks from the album. That should be enough to tell you whether it's worth your money to buy the whole album.

    Archie Shepp

My head's still ringing from listening to Archie playing live at The Hammersmith Odeon in London in the late 1960's. The group started with a very loud version of 'A Portrait of Robert Thompson' from 'Mama Too Tight' and then increased the volume and played what I think were the other tracks from the album. The audience was literally blown out of their seats! His group was playing back-up for Miles Davis on the tour and it was obvious that the music completely polarised the audience. Archie's followers were crying out for more whilst most of those who had booked to see Miles walked out. A very strange evening. Oh yes, and Miles was fine too!
  9. What 'needle-drop' music are you referring to here?
  10. I can send you a Jimmie Noone discography by BRUYNINCKX as a Word document. PM me if you're interested
  11. I thought you'd know the background to this, Chuck. Thanks for putting me straight!
  12. This album was originally released on India Navigation as well as Whynot so I wonder whether the masters have gone back to Henry Threadgill following the death of the owner of India Navigation a few years ago and he is re-issuing it. I only say this because I bought a 'professionally produced CD-R' of this album some years ago and was told then that it had been produced by Henry Threadgill. Anyway it's not showing as an upcoming release on the Candid Records website. It goes without saying that this is a 'must-have' album!
  13. You may have used the Cadillac Jazz e-mail address that's still shown on the website. Cadillac Jazz has ceased trading (I think!) and Hazel is running Ogun Records from her front room until she can find new premises.
  14. This is a thread that will run and run..........!
  15. I heard within a day and got the CD in another two. Are you using the correct e-mail address? ogunrecords@googlemail.com I noticed that Downtown Music Gallery are advertising it here: DMG BTW it's excellent!
  16. Glad to hear that it's a good 'un! I ordered mine from Hiroshi a few weeks ago & have just heard that it's on it's way. Like you, I have enjoyed all her previous albums so I'm really looking forward to hearing this.
  17. Yes, I got my copy from Red Octopus. They were very helpful in getting me through their on-line ordering process. What a shame they've closed! IMO both volumes are excellent and deserve to be more widely available.
  18. I ordered mine direct from Hazel Miller at Ogun Records today - £11.50 incl. p&p. She takes Paypal on: ogunrecords@googlemail.com

Great news! Thanks for the heads-up, Roger!
  20. Does anyone know if this is the Chicago pianist? Anyone know anything about it? MG According to Bruyninckx: Wright Changes & Choices John Wright (p) Chris Giles (b) Steve Carow (d) Chicago, Ill., June 26, 1994 Blue Monk Please send me someone to love Watermelon man Evelyn John Brown's body My funny Valentine Summertime Why did I choose you ? 21. This is excellent news........BUT.......the Henry Threadgill set has gone back, again
  22. Does anyone have an update on when or whether these Horo albums will be released?
  23. Does anyone know whether any of Richie Kamuca's three albums on Concord have ever been re-issued on CD? I've managed to put a big scratch on my vinyl copy of 'Drop me off in Harlem' and I'm looking for a replacement!

    Faith

I've just ordered 'Faith' from Hiroshi so I can't comment on that particular release, but the other two are excellent. 'Autumn Colors' has him in a trio whilst 'Song of the Unsung' has him playing solo.
  25. The UK CD versions WERE the same as the Japanese versions - I bought them both! I think there is very little chance they will ever be remastered and re-released so if you want to hear this excellent music then I'd go with whatever you can find at a reasonable price
