I've been recently researching the individual Lps with a view to buying some of them - still reasonably priced. Are there any sessions from the box that you'd particularly recommend? I have and enjoy Poly-currents . Off to cultivate the sideburns as well My two favourite albums are the trio sessions with Joe Farrell - 'Puttin' It Together' & 'The Ultimate Elvin Jones'. 'Puttin' It Together' has been out on CD but is hard to find at a 'reasonable price' (whatever that is!). I'm not sure whether 'The Ultimate EJ' has ever had a CD release. It's a great shame that these two superb recordings are not currently in print, but I guess you could say that about lots of other recordings too. Eventually, everything seems to turn up in one form or another!

Wow, you don't get sideburns like that anymore! I was just playing the Elvin Jones Mosaic boxset the other day and thinking what a fantastic group this was. Hard to believe that none of them are with us now.

Dominique Fillon is current French Premier François Fillon's youngest brother. He even had a writeup in a recent issue of Paris-Match. Heard his piano playing on a recent TV show. From what I heard briefly, I'll save my money! Ah well, I bet his father's still proud of him!

All get decidedly lukewarm reviews on AMG. Nothing new there, I guess.

I ordered it after reading a review stating it is some of the very best Savant productions ever. Chambers plays hommage to some of the music I grew with and love best, here. I like him very much in his classic Blue Note recordings with Shorher Hutcherson and Hill, where he is really GREAT, but he never convinced me much in some other more recent recordings as a leader (maybe the impossible comparision issue, though). IMO his earlier Savant release 'The Outlaw' is better but I've enjoyed all the later releases that I've heard. I particularly like his 1998 release - 'Mirrors'.

No fees for buying...only for selling. Don't forget to include any costs for shipping etc into the price.

There's very little that mystifies me nowadays.....apart from how to set the DVD recorder, that is.

Yes, it came out as one of series of albums of British Jazz on the Jasmine label some years ago. It's called 'The Jazz Couriers: The First And Last Words (JASCD 626)'. It's currently available at Amazon.

Like you I bought the Charles Sullivan - Re-Entry release recently and thought it was excellent. I'd be interested in getting Genesis if I could find it for a reasonable price. Any offers anyone?
-
Thanks for that, Dan. That probably explains why it sounds like a 'warm-up' track. Not helped, I must say, by him being backed by one of my least-favourite drummers, Al Foster!

The album 'I Wanna talk About You' by Tete Montoliu on SteepleChase has Hank Mobley playing on one of the tracks - 'Autumn Leaves. The date of the session is identified as March, 22 1980 and it was recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark. The other musicians on the date are shown as George Mraz (bass) and Al Foster (drums). Does anyone know the background to this session and how Hank came to be in Denmark at this time? I didn't know Hank was still recording then.

It's along time ago now so I can't be absolutely certain who was playing in the band. However it certainly included the two trombones of Rudd & Moncur plus Beaver Harris on drums. Was anyone else there that night who can confirm the line-up?
-
Yes, that's what I did mean. Can you imagine Miles ever agreeing to play with a back-up band!
-
If you go to the Marge/Futura website at: Futura/Marge Records you can listen to the whole of one of the tracks from the album. That should be enough to tell you whether it's worth your money to buy the whole album.

My head's still ringing from listening to Archie playing live at The Hammersmith Odeon in London in the late 1960's. The group started with a very loud version of 'A Portrait of Robert Thompson' from 'Mama Too Tight' and then increased the volume and played what I think were the other tracks from the album. The audience was literally blown out of their seats! His group was playing back-up for Miles Davis on the tour and it was obvious that the music completely polarised the audience. Archie's followers were crying out for more whilst most of those who had booked to see Miles walked out. A very strange evening. Oh yes, and Miles was fine too!

CD release (rerelease?) of Air Raid next week
Head Man replied to paul secor's topic in New Releases
This album was originally released on India Navigation as well as Whynot so I wonder whether the masters have gone back to Henry Threadgill following the death of the owner of India Navigation a few years ago and he is re-issuing it. I only say this because I bought a 'professionally produced CD-R' of this album some years ago and was told then that it had been produced by Henry Threadgill. Anyway it's not showing as an upcoming release on the Candid Records website. It goes without saying that this is a 'must-have' album! -
You may have used the Cadillac Jazz e-mail address that's still shown on the website. Cadillac Jazz has ceased trading (I think!) and Hazel is running Ogun Records from her front room until she can find new premises.
