  1. I have a number of them: Mike Osborne - Force of nature Ray Russell - Secret Asylum Splinters Bob Downes - Crossing Borders Harry Miller's Isispingo These were the people I watched play live in London every week during the 60's and they remind me of a very happy period in my life. They are all very well produced and the sound is excellent
  2. Not unless it happened when I was away on vacation last week!
  3. Thanks for the swift reply. Another one to add to my 'to get' list!
  4. Can anyone recommend (or not) his 1975 album 'Afrisong' which has been reissued recently on Candid/Whynot?
  5. I've just returned from vacation and found the Mosaic e-mail waiting for me. This is great news and the music is well overdue for re-issuing. Whilst I have everything by him that has been already been issued on Novus & Columbia, there is probably something new included in the boxset and it will be great to hear it remastered. Not forgetting the usual excellent Mosaic booklet, of course! Well done Mosaic and this news makes me much more optimistic about their future.
  6. Yes, it's paired on Collectables with the Allen Ganley-Ronnie Ross Atlantic, a good date. "Groove, Funk, Soul" IIRC is a bit better than "Teddy's Ready" -- not that there's anything wrong with "TR," but "GFS" was just a darn good day in the studio. Unfortunately the Joe Castro date on this CD only contains six of the eight tracks from the album, something that Collectables has done on a number of their '2 on 1' releases. Since he made two albums for Atlantic - 'Groove, Funk, Soul' & 'Mood Jazz' it would seem more logical to have paired these on the CD. Still, what's ever logical about CD reissues? However it's an excellent session and well worth getting. BTW Joe Castro provides great accompanyment for Zoot Sims on another release - 'Live at Falcon Lair', that came out on Pablo a few years ago.
  7. ......but not as fine as their album 'The Peoples' Republic' on A&M! Now when is that ever going to get a CD re-issue?
  8. It would be great to see his wonderful RCA Novus releases from the 70s & 80s get properly re-issued. What a great series of albums they were. I'm not so keen on his later music on Pi.
  9. I've checked it with Hiroshi: New release. I received it today: I love her two 'Live at The Village Vanguard' albums but I'm not too keen on 'Fragile'. What does this new one sound like?
  10. What's happened to the Captain? The last I read was that he was living in the desert, suffering from some unspecified illness. Or did I dream that?
  11. It was!
  12. If you want an excellent introduction to West Coast jazz then I can recommend a couple of books that are well worth getting: Ted Gioia - West Coast Jazz, & Robert Gordon - Jazz West Coast (Catchy titles, eh!) They whetted my appetite, but a word of warning - following the album recommendations will seriously damage your finances
  13. Thank for the heads-up, Chuck. My order to Amazon is on its way!
  14. I don't know whether they are in the sale but TCB released some of Lynne Arriale's best albums.
  15. Thanks for clarifying, but I really don't know the subtle differences between delta blues and country blues, or other acoustic blues from this era. So, don't leave out good suggestions if I don't know what I'm asking for. If that makes sense! Oh yes, and something by Blind Boy Fuller should also be on your list. Again, either of the Columbia/Sony or JSP sets are excellent.
  16. Yes, plus something by Blind Willie Johnson. Either of the sets on Columbia or JSP are excellent. Oh...and don't forget the early Blind Gary Davis set on Yazoo. That should be enough to be getting on with for now!
  17. I'd never heard of him until this thread. Nor me!
  18. thanks for the response nate - FWIW i could not find an existing thread. The previous thread is here: Ogun Blue Notes Boxset BTW The boxset is superb and may be cheaper to order directly from Hazel Miller at Ogun Records. However, the site doesn't have on-line ordering facilities so you would have to order by phone/e-mail.
  19. He didn't get better looking as he got older, did he!
  20. I've never heard of this guy but what a great name for a jazzman!
  21. There is one entry in Bruyninckx for 1989 which mentions Jimmy Woods. It's an album by Januscz Carmeillo called 'Portrait' on the Hep label. Jimmy plays on one track, 'Daydream'. It was recorded on June 3, 1989 in Edinburgh, Scotland.
  22. It WILL be re-released on LPs by Pure Pleasure Records in England. Thanks for the info, Laurie. Is there some reason why it's only getting a vinyl release since I'm sure that will mean a far smaller audience for what is a terrific recording. BTW I saw him live at Ronnie Scott's on the same tour and he was on fire; a really memorable occasion.
  23. The press release refers to a download from CDBABY of the album 'Blues for The Fisherman' that will be available shortly. I was lucky enough to buy a copy of this when it was first released by Mole Jazz and it really is a terrific album from a session he did live at Ronnie Scott's Club in June, 1980. What a shame it isn't getting a proper re-release on CD.
  24. Carradine may have died from sex act: Thai police "Under these circumstances we cannot be sure that he committed suicide but he may have died from masturbation," he said. Oh my God! Something else to worry about!
