  1. I thought it was terrific although different from his earlier music; spine-tingling, even! Looks like we'll be lucky to get a follow-up.
  2. I hope this is true (and its coming from Chuck is cause for optimism). Those were really good LPs and I'd love to see them in print and easily obtainable. This is from the 'Mosaic Ahmad Jamal - John Carter/Bobby Bradford Release' thread. Looks promising!
  3. "Paolo Scotti, a man with a mission, hailing from Italy, Paolo has over the years become a global leading authority on not only Italian Jazz but also Jazz in general" Has anyone here heard of Mr. Scotti and/or Conch Records?
  4. I don't know whether it's legit or not but if this is the sum total of the widely trailed Horo re-issue program, then it's a poor do!
  5. Wow.......put me down for copies of all of those! Great news and thanks for letting us know, Jonathan! PS I'm playing your Carter/Bradford boxset as I'm typing this - wonderful music. Thanks again for making it available.
  6. Chuck, do you know who has the rights to release Bob Thiele's Flying Dutchman releases?
  7. I'm currently listening to the latest John Carter/Bobby Bradford Mosaic Select set and it's so good I wonder if anyone knows why their recordings made for Flying Dutchman in the late 60s/70s have never had a proper reissue on CD. Four tracks surfaced on RCA Novus in 1991 where they were paired with another four tracks by Horace Tapscott (West Coast Hot) but apart from that they seem to have disappeared. Are there contractual problems or what?
  8. Recorded live at percussionist Mike Mahaffy's performance space, Sunrise Studio in NYC on September 28, 1975. Ted Daniel (trumpet, flugelhorn, French hunting horn, tambourine Richard Pierce (bass) Tatsuya Nakamura (trap drums, quarter drums); Congeniality (18:41) - Ornette Coleman Jiblet (17:05) - Sunny Murray The Moor (9:51) - Ted Daniel O.C. (9:23) - Ted Daniel Turned out better than I expected. Very nice!
  9. Easy, when I see something I like.....I buy it.
  10. Does anyone have any further information on these two releases that are up for pre-ordering at Amazon? They appear to be coming out on the Candid label: Tubby Hayes - Inventivity Ronnie Scott - And His American Friends
  11. How sad. I only have good memories of seeing him play during the time I lived in London in the 1960s and 70s. As Bev said, he had a lovely, feathery sound and I'm really sorry I'll not get the chance to see him playing again; IMO his recordings don't really do him justice.
  12. I bought several albums on the Smalls Record label (is this the same label?) a few years ago by Frank Hewitt and by Omer Avital which were all excellent.
  13. I wonder why none of his Impulse albums are currently available? I don't even think 'Point of Departure' ever got released outside of Japan.
  14. New release of Junko Onishi always makes me happy. Oh, I missed that. Any details on who's playing with her etc. Bentsy? I'll e-mail Hiroshi ans ask him. I received this e-mail message from Hiroshi: Thanks Bentsy - it looks good. From the title I wondered whether it might have been a classical rather than jazz recording. It's on my list!
  15. Update.......I've just heard from Mosaic that it was dispatched yesterday. I guess the booklets must have arrived earlier than expected
  16. short AMG review of Posthumous Thanks for that, but I read it already, it didn't really go into that much detail and I was a bit freaked out when he included George Mraz in the "three good but not great musicians" statement, has anyone actually got it?, Susan Chen sounds like she might be interesting. Firstly, the Posthumous album is lovely. It's a quartet album recorded in New York on March 15, 1985 with Warne backed by Susan Chen on piano, who's excellent, George Mraz on bass and Akira Tana on drums. I've not heard the Personal Statement album but it's one I probably wouldn't bother with. I understand it was recorded three days before Warne died and consists of about 30 minutes of him playing unaccompanied sax solos. It sounds like it could have been a warm-up session for a recording that never took place.
  17. I've just been told by Mosaic that my Carter/Bradford set will not be shipping for another two weeks. I think I read somewhere else that there's been a delay in producing the booklets. Ah well.......it was ever thus!
  18. I'll be grabbing the Warne Marsh/Sal Mosca on Flyright. I have it on vinyl and it's excellent.
  19. Pre-FMP private edition? Hold onto that one, even if it is an unruly slab o' wax! Yes, it was pre-FMP but I'm afraid it went many years ago. Sold back to the same record shop in which I bought it. Hopefully it brought some (listening) joy to someone. Oh yes, and Captain Beefheart's 'Trout Mask Replica'. Perhaps this might be good new thread to start: 'Albums that your wife/girlfriend/boyfriend/partner/family etc etc never allowed you to play whilst they were around'
  20. I once bought a copy of Machine Gun, direct from Peter Brotzman in a London jazz shop where he was delivering copies, without any idea what it would sound like. When I got home and played it..... I went blind........no sorry, deaf! It was the only jazz album my wife ever refused to allow me to play when she was in the house.
  21. They say that if you can remember the 70s (or is it the 60s?) then you weren't there . Me, I have trouble remembering yesterday.
  22. Or anything else!
  23. I managed to find a copy of Genesis for a reasonable price and it arrived this morning. What a terrific album - I've been playing it all day. He reminds me a lot of Woody Shaw but unlike Woody he's only had three albums released under his own name. Why? I've just put an order in for Kamau!
