  1. Just noticed on the Wounded Bird website that Woody Shaw's two Elektra Musician albums are scheduled for release soon and are showing on Amazon with a release date of 17 March. I've had these on vinyl since their release and they are both worth having.
  2. Thanks Chuck, my order arrived safely yesterday. Lovely to hear the Charles Tyler again after all these years. I still can't get used to not having to turn it over half-way through, though ! I'm really enjoying the Wadada Leo Smith as well. I'd like to add my thanks to you for keeping this wonderful music in circulation.
  3. The following CDs are scheduled for release. Can anyone help?
  4. I have had the Denny Zeitlin album 'Calexis/Carnival' on Collectables for several years now and it is one of my favourite piano albums. The music does not come over as remotely 'poppish'. Unfortunately the album only contains five tracks from 'Carnival' so it is not complete, but everything on it is excellent. My one criticism is that several of the tracks are faded out, something that always irritates me and I wonder whether this has been remedied with this new boxset. In fact I think I have convinced myself to pre-order the set!
  5. I've just done a Google search and it would appear that the limit increased from £18 to £105 in December 2008 BUT ONLY FOR CUSTOMS DUTY. The rules on VAT have not changed and it should still be applied; plus the charge that the Post Office makes for collecting the fee. I know collection of this fee can be a bit 'hit and miss' but when it is collected it comes to a significant additional cost. I think I might wait until the set comes out on 'general release', probably later this year
  6. Both these sets look nice although I already have most of the John Handy on the three CDs already issued by Koch, so I'll probably give that one a miss for the time being I seem to recall that the limit on which import duty is charged on goods coming from the US to the UK has recently increased. Does anyone know whether a $50 set would come in duty free?
  7. The George Cables album is very nice too. Like you I can thoroughly recommend all these releases and it will be very nice to have them back in circulation again after all these years.
  8. What a shame! With the Appleby Jazz Festival going down in 2007 I wonder which of the UK Jazz festivals will still be there in 2009?
  9. I have a copy of the Japanese CD reissue from a few years ago and the back of the booklet only contains a track listing plus details of personnel & solos. There's lots of other information in the booklet but, of course, it's all in Japanese! I suspect that the original LP cover only had what is shown on the back of my booklet.
  10. I take it all back! I just received a copy from Downtown Music Gallery this morning, so it is back in circulation again. It's an excellent session with Art Taylor, in particular, in blistering form. Well worth getting. Here's the link if anyone's interested: Visit My Website
  11. It's showing as 'temporarily out of stock' at Cadence & also 'being restocked' at the Marge/Futura site so I wouldn't hold your breath! I've been trying to get a copy of this for several years now and its release keeps getting put back. Apparently the owner of Marge/Futura Records was/is in dispute with the photographer who took the photographs for the original album cover and this has prevented it being released. I had it on vinyl many years ago and I remember it as being an excellent album. Fingers crossed that it comes out one day!
  12. The charges to retailers for using Paypal are higher than for many other forms of financial transactions so I guess they're just trying to protect their margins. Although some of their e-mails are not terrible 'user friendly', I've always found them very helpful and they do stock some very 'hard-to-find'' releases.
  13. It's currently being advertised at the Downtown Music Gallery in New York: DMG Looks a bit pricey, mind, at $90 compared with £32 incl postage for UK customers
  14. I believe it is Louis Moholo on drums and Barre Phillips on bass. BTW My Blue Notes box set arrived this morning. I've not had a chance to listen to it yet but the booklet is excellent.
  15. Thanks for letting us know. Just ordered my copy by phone from Hazel Miller.
  16. I don't think I have anything by Jimmy Heath that I don't like, but my favourite album of his has always been 'Triple Threat'. I bought it on vinyl when it was first released and I've loved it ever since. I also managed to speak to him briefly when he was leading a quartet at The Village Vanguard about seven years ago and he seemed a very nice, dignified person. The music wasn't too bad either!
  17. I've just checked the Wounded Bird site and see that the two very good Elektra Musician albums by Chico Freeman are also due out next month. Chico Freeman/Tradition In Transition ....CD $11.99 Chico Freeman/Tangents ....CD $11.99 Chico Freeman is a jazz tenor saxophone player who has made many fine albums over the years. Two of those were on the Elektra/Musician label. ' Tradition In Transition' from 1982, features Jack DeJohnette. 'Tangents' from 1984, features Bobby McFerrin. Both make their CD debut here. This has made my day! Well done Wounded Bird!
  18. Great news! Thanks for the info, I'll keep my eyes open for it/them!
  19. To my mind the best albums not yet issued on CD are the two he made for Elektra Musician in 1982. I seem to recall this was discussed on a different thread some time ago but for the life of me I can't understand why these two beauties have never seen the light of day. They would make a terrific 'doubler'. For information the recordings are: Night Music Orange Crescent To Kill A Brick Apex All The Things You Are Master Of The Art 400 Years Ago Tomorrow Diane Mysterioso Sweet Love Of Mine Interview with Woody Shaw Woody Shaw - trumpet, flugelhorn Steve Turre - trombone Bobby Hutcherson - vibes Mulgrew Miller - piano Stafford James - bass Tony Reedus - drums Recorded: February 25, 1982 Live at 'The Jazz Forum', New York City
  20. My copy arrived today. Many thanks for the great service, Chuck! Mmmm... I was expecting it to be by Anthony Braxton
  21. You didn't get a price for it, did you? I still haven't had a response to my e-mail.
  22. They seem to be a bit 'hit or miss' as far as replying to e-mails go. I e-mailed them today to ask what the price was going to be so it'll be interesting to find out whether I get a reply. I usually end up ringing them direct and ordering over the phone. Easy enough when you live in the UK but not so good if you have to ring from abroad, I know.
  23. Ogun has now given a confirmed release date for the box-set: Cadillac Records Only another four weeks to wait!
  24. Found this link over on 'that other place'. Now this looks like a group for a good night out!
