This isn't really my post on this AOW. But I just wanted to ad something to Ed's thoughts about why this album was so popular with the general public. The singing is gorgeous, the arrangements simple, and Getz very melodic. Melody is something that reaches everyone, and is often lost in the jazz world. Bossa reminded everyone of these elements: Simplicity, Beauty and Melody.....just a thought. More later.

Javon Jackson just doesn't have it in my book. Good player, but every solo disc I hear from him sounds wishy washy. I mean with this lineup, how could you go wrong? Somehow Javon does. He guides this group to Boresville. Jackson's compositions have always been berkely-bland. Too bad this lineup is so killer. But like everyone else I was disappointed. I've barely had it on since I got it. These guys seem to think...Hey, I'll get Lonnie Smith and do a funk album! Problem is just that mindset. There's no grits to Javon's playing. "Soul Manifeso" and "Modern Man" are the only two recent offereings of this type of thing that really do justice to this brand of playing imho. My advice is don't buy this. Treat yourself to something real in this department and find John Patton's "Boogaloo."

It seems to air all the time. I'm not sure when. The original airings seem to happen on Sunday with repeats happening throughout the week.

I was thinking about this too. I asked the guy how much, but was turned off when everthing needed special $200 adapter kits...one for your car...one for your house. No thanks. Effectively it was about 500 bucks plus a fee every month. Why does every company feel the need to rip the consumer off.

I've seen about 4 episodes. Pretty interesting stuff in a way. Odd combinations of musicians, although Bela Fleckl and Pat Martino actually meshed pretty well (although they were teamed with some "smooth Jazz" trumpeter!!????.) But Joey Defrancesco, Tuck Andress, Derek Trucks with Victor Wooten and "Future Man?" They also had the Yellowjackets as a whole, but with a wierd guitarist who I didn't dig very much. I guess this is produced in Philly. Hence, maybe that's why I keep seeing Wooten and "Future Man." But Future needs to go. His drumming is downright bad at times in certain contexts. You'd think there's no drummers in Philly. And I could do without Wooten even though he seems like a good musician. But give me some standup please and more pocket. Anybody else see this. Kind of a cool idea. I could do without the "let's put 'different' kinds of musicians together and see what happens" thing.

Well, you're really exactly right Dr. J. Generalizations are ALWAYS wrong aren't they. Given those paramenters, I was making a generalized statement. And I agree with you 100%, there was some AWESOME jazz made it the 80's. Something that is true for every decade. Let's face it, Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Smith, Wayne Shorter, and many many others...these guys are still on this earth making music today. ANY decade these legends are around are good ones to say the least. I think in 200 years from now this whole era from the 50's until these men die or quit playing will be considered classic eras. That's just one point in the case that decades shouldn't be discounted. We STILL are living in the best of times. We just don't know it.

Just wanted to thank everyone who listened and posted about "Moon Rappin'" I hope Jim S. and Jim A. post their thoughts once the mailman comes. Thanks everyone!

I think the real lame jazz era was the 80's. Many of the neo-conservatives eventually did develop into fine players. However, their initial offerings were pretty lame for the most part, especially in retrospect. Too young to be given that much power, and the music proved it. However, I think the 90's and 00's got things back in order. There's a pretty wide range of "accepted" jazz styles today, and the whole atmosphere seems healthier. The playing from the older vets and of the younger top players seems excellent imho. Lot's of GREAT music happening no matter what style you dig. The 70's did offer a substantial contribution to the jazz fabric. Mile's 70's bands proved their influence over a whole new hip-hop inspired generation. The 80's contribution was that it did make us go back to the worthy elements of previous decades. However, those 80's players themselves didn't really blossum until later I think.

I Just Saw "Solaris" (2003)

My reaction was Wow, this sucks. I didn't like it at all. I will say it LOOKED good on the screen. -
I think Dan did it right with his AOW. Any interested parties just PM'd him with their address. Dan then sent out the discs..... Pretty simple really.

This sounds like a fun idea to me.

I always remember Big John's birthday, but until the Burrell thread didn't think about posting it. So anyway, here's to Big John. He was a good friend and one of the jazz world's greatest organists. One of the few organists with a completely original style and concept. I talked with his wife today, and shared a few good laughs about some things John use to say and do. She's doing well and is looking forward to the Mosaic Select that is coming out of John's work. Think I'll put on some Patton, pop a beer and groove a while! Happy Birthday John...

I've been listening to "Blue Bash" quite a lot recently. Man, his TONE on that thing is sooooo bad (not to mention his playing!)

Ever seriously thought of quitting music?
Soul Stream replied to Soul Stream's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I had one of those gigs last night that makes you want to throw in the towel. This has happened enough over the years after a bad gig, that I know not to take it too seriously. Actually, the gig wasn't bad aside from the fact that I was so frustrated with my playing that I was despressed by the time I got home. Sometimes this sort of thing motivates me to practice, practice, practice. Other times it makes me want to look at the want ads. -
If they play it on any sort of commercial radio...then it's not jazz.

Been having problems gettin here off and on all day....

Listening to a lot of Stanley Turrentine and Shirley Scott records. "Hustlin'" and "A Chip off The Old Block" are killing me! Also, "Moon Rappin'" Gene Ammons "Boss Tenor" and "Best of the 70's" And, of course, always John Patton on the player. Lately, I've been revisiting some of his mid-period Blue Note stuff. Looking forward to the Mosaic Select coming out soon for Big John.

...just realized this is in the wrong catagory and I can't seem to delete it! Sorry....

Well Jim, I've just got to let the whole thing go. You know how much a nice Leslie 122 runs. Matter of fact, I had just bought it and had also put $300 into repairs to get it working perfectly (it was actually the better of my 2 122s). You know what they say, no act of kindness goes unpunished! . The guy was playing through a smaller leslie at the time, so I thought "Hey, I'm not using both these 122s, I'll lend him this other one for a while to help him out." My generousity has come back to bite me a couple of times in my life, this was just this hardest. Especially since it cost me a few gigs eventually when my leslie was in the shop, ect.... But like you said, Karma's a bitch. I can only hope.

Hey, I'm just glad I've got a drummer for tonight's gig! I'd like to get something out (who wouldn't!), but right now I'm just trying to keep my head above water musically speaking. I think it's great you have a consistent group that has a vision and loves to play together. I'm still trying to get there. Hopefully, if and when I do, I'll be able to record and ya'll will be the first to know! Keep up the great work. (kind of a p.s.... We all know how expensive it is to produce a studio recording of your own. Money is always a factor, and a big reason I've never recorded on my own). A few years a go, I lent a 122 Leslie cabinet to another organist who never returned it. Left town, never paid me, not a word. I just noticed he has a brand new CD coming out that he recorded at an expensive studio here in town (I guess he snuck back for a second). Since he lives in Germany now, I've got no recourse that I know of. But it still irks me. Plus, he stole it when I was in desperate need of money (both my kids were under 3 at the time).)
