  1. I've been loading up my ipod and putting downloading the old covers from various places. However, a lot of these CDs came out with Legends of Acid jazz CD Covers, ect and I'm trying to find the original artwork somewhere. Anybody have any sites or ideas?
  2. That's too bad Jim. Guess the stars didn't line up right. Wonder if Big Al might make it, he's a Dallas guy ain't he??
  3. I thought I might be able to make this as I had a possible gig up in Dallas this weekend, but it didn't happen. Wish I could see this, but hopefully someone from the Dallas chapter of organissimo can make it....
  4. Nestor Torres...I don't think I'm familiar. Anybody know?
  5. Bennie sent me an e-mail and said it would be best to call SGI-USA Dallas. They also have a website. This seems to be a Budhist endeavour for Hurricane relief. They have 2 shows...one tonight and one tommorrow at 2 p.m. it seems. When I called the lady said the venue location had been changed and didn't know to where. Said to call back but was very nice. I'm not sure what the situation is, but it may not be a traditional concert as we think of it...she was surprised I called and said I would be welcome as her guest,ect... Anyway, Jim Sangrey and others....Buster Williams and Bennie Maupin are in your town tonight....
  6. Hey, I've been to the Vanguard on a weekday and seen pretty pitiful crowds for unbelievable talent (take away the japanese fans, and it'd be even worse). The fault doesn't belong in Chicago...apathetic audiences for jazz is an American problem. It is a real shame. It's like watching everyone eat at McDonalds when there's a 5 star restaurant across the street for the same price. Jazz is a niche audience. Just like anything that takes a refined aesthetic or sensibility. But Barry Harris DOES deserve better. Of course, I wish I was in a place that had such shows.
  7. I'd love to see Barry! ...just a thought. I played a jazz club down in San Antonio last night. Haven't played there in a while and there turnout seemed pretty low compared to the past. The club owner said business had been way down since Hurricane Katrina. That and high gas probably ain't helping. So maybe that's part of it.?
  8. Just to let you know, I e-mailed Bennie and he's going to get back to me with the details of the gigs. I'll post them when I get them....
  9. I dig this session but the piano sounds a bit mid-rangey to me which dampens a bit of my enjoyment as far as listening goes. Love him with Philly Joe.
  10. Anybody care to share any thoughts on Sonic Boom?
  11. I like having itunes and my songs on my computer as I seem to listen just as much on my pc as the ipod. My home stereo is gettin' pretty dusty.
  12. I read an entry tonight on Sonny Rollins new website from Bennie Maupin saying he and Buster Williams were traveling to Dallas tomorrow to play 2 gigs for Hurricane Katrina relief!!??? Anybody know where or when??? Calling Jim Sangrey....
  13. Thanks, are these fairly easy to install?
  14. Hey Congrats! That's quite an achievement for a self-produced effort. No doubt about that. Great job guys!
  15. I just picked up the whole CD...Nancy Wilson Sings Songs Of Lost Love. It's really, really, really good. Highly recommended. I was really dissing her a few weeks ago on this board, but these early Capitol sides have turned it around for me....
  16. Top 3 are all organ records....wow. Chicago IS an organ town!!!! No wonder Baby Face Willette made it his home.
  17. I LOVE Capitol+Singers+50's or 60's....that's just a winning combination and these tracks sound absolutely gorgeous. I really, really, really didn't like Nancy Wilson...but my only exposure has been that horrible NW that slurs, over enunciates and garbles stuff to death. Many of these Capitol sides seem to be very, very listenable and enjoyable. I plan on downloading a few more on itunes.
  18. In A Sentimental Mood off her new reissue comp. Great American Songbook. Don't know the origins of it. Usually not a fan at all really of hers, but she nails it on this cut for sure.
  19. Yeah, but Lon...I can barely crack that thing open enough to see what's in it. That binding is just plain silly! I don't care a whole lot about reading it...I just download the whole thing into itunes anyway. But why even bother with a booklet if the surrounding packaging forbids reading it. o.k...I'm officially a nerd...arguing over binding of box sets....
  20. Look. New Orleans is going to be rebuilt. Many parts of the City weren't even water damaged. Not to mention the other areas on the other side of the levee. I'm not going to say it's going to happen overnight. They'll just build the levee's higher or build a high retaining wall while they're rebuilding there. They might put a 1 year no-habitation order while they rebuild parts of the infrastructure and levee. But it will get done, I have no doubt.
  21. I think the blame game is a no win situation. One used to think that by getting to the bottom of our mistakes, lessons would be learned. I think we've figured out after 9/11 that we don't and the endless bickering doesn't help matters. All this while resue efforts are still continuing. Can't we at least try and get the rescue efforts in full effect before we start pointing fingers? This isn't a republican/democrat problem it's an American problem we need to solve before this happens again. Sadly, I don't have much faith that will happen. The politics in this country and hurting us all. Literally.
  22. ...Oh that wasn't Kenny G. That was Kenny Gee Your Tits Sho' Are Nice.
  23. But we can't let thoughts like these cloud our compassion. We really need to have unconditional love for these people right now.
  24. Irma Thomas makes me think of JazzFest.... wonder what will become of that in the near future. Perhaps Houston could carry the JazzFest torch this year and use it as a fundraiser.
  25. I never said he was wrong, just wondered in the back of my mind why someone would bother to say such a thing. I usually am the weak link on these things (though I think I do bring other things to the table like making the gig happen in the first place, writing arrangements and picking material etc, etc) and I wouldn't have it any other way. Nothing like being challenged by some of the best musicians out here. ← Yes, David...I agree this is lame. As a musician myself, I notice that there are certain people that can't wait to tell you how "bad" you are. No matter how good you are. Those that can do, and the rest bitch. Good luck with your arm. Always a musician's worst nightmare no doubt.
