  1. Wow. No mention of Harold Maebern? He's really a worker bee that needs more attention for his artistry.
  2. I haven't seen this guy in years. But I definately used to dig his funky, freaky, vibe.
  3. Just another idea. How bout a running total of contributions for the person we're trying to help...then, just send 'em a check.
  4. Michael, can you share? If you'd rather not name names publicly, I understand that too.
  5. That's pretty disturbing. And yet, not surprising considering how we treat artists in this country. Sink or swim...there's a lot of sinking in the arts.
  6. Leon Spencer Jr. by a long shot. . But this series holds MANY treasures.
  7. I think I'd rather just not know!
  8. Not to de-rail the thread, but... I'm sure Jim is interested in this as well. I've always been curious as to organ combos that may have appeared on tv shows in the 50s-70s (Seems Lou Donaldson must have made a showing somewhere!). Certainly this must have happened. Even saw a listing of Jimmy Smith on a Dinah Shore show from TV Guide someone had posted. Michael F., do you have any idea where things like this might be found?
  9. As much as this is a fun game....we all know there was one and only one Jimmy Smith! Thank goodness he came through and stayed as long as he did. Wish we could say that for the others in his brotherhood like Trane, Parker, Blanton, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Larry Young... Jimmy outlasted lots. But I will say this. I hope Dr. Lonnie Smith does get his due now. He's been waiting behind Jimmy and Joey in the "give-me-some" line a long time. Hopefully, we'll start seeing more articles, better placement in polls, and better attendance and encouragement for his art. There's not a lot of the original cats like Lonnie left...Melvin Rhyne, Trudy Pitts, Reuben Wilson, Rhoda Scott, Leon Spencer Jr. and Ceasar Frazier to name some of the crew. Hope they all get more attention in the next few years.
  10. that's crazy. been having trouble finding "Legacy" anywhere.
  11. For my money, Dr. Lonnie Smith is the prince who should be made king. He deserves the crown, and has been in Joey's shadow far to long as far as the press goes. Not to take away from Joey, but to me, Lonnie's a true original!. He's so exciting and a virtuoso performer. He has his own personality that's downright wacky. Which all of the greats ultimately have, a real sense of self. I've seen both, but man....Lonnie rules in my book. I LOVE that guy!
  12. Politics is something I dare even step into. No one sees eye to eye. I also want to say, I'm anti-everything big in the retail business. I mourn the loss of mom and pop places. Locally owned businesses and retail diversity serve a purpose. More than we care to admit. And it's come around to bite us in the ass. We all wanted six pair of socks for a dollar, no matter what it meant to the worker in China or the U.S., hence the success of Walmart and other super discount retailers. That said, I just think the philosophical differences are negligable. It's always the bottom line. Walmart has a concept that the lowest price for the consumer is their goal while enhancing their bottom line as much as they can. If that means low pay, no benefits, having foreigners work in sweatshops for 30 cents a day, ect, so be it. That's the American way, sad as it is. If Walmart is that bad of a place to work. Don't work there. Or Unionize. If you don't like the way they do business, don't shop there. But let's face it...unions and social protest are a thing of the past. We've done this to ourselves. Like they say, If Walmart didn't exist, we would have created it.
  13. imho, i don't see the difference between a walmart, target, best buy, home depot, lowes, petsmart, circuit city, mcdonalds, wendy's, taco bell, chilis, and on and on. mass stuff to stuff the masses. not sure there's anything wrong with it. just seemed inevitable. don't think the business practices are different among any of these, except the people at chick-fil-et get sunday off.
  14. Austin aye?? .... You wouldn't happen to know funketeer drummer Les Fisher? He's a long time friend and drum brother... I don't know Les, but will keep an ear open. I'm always surprised at how many people I don't know in this town!
  15. Lou Donaldson "The Scorpion: Live At The Cadillac Club" Jimmy Smith "Groovin' At Small's Paradise" Lonnie Smith "Live At Club Mozambique" Jimmy Smith/Eddie Harris "Live At The Keystone Korner"
  16. I like ScottB's management style. I think that really works in the business! Now if we can just start calling this a project and have Dr. John and Bonnie Raitt guest on it, we might have something.
  17. But you forgot, my guitar player just left to go on tour with Bob Dylan! Damn, another setback. We actually just played our last gig this evening since he's leaving. And it was the best turnout ever (guess word travels fast)
  18. Thanks WD, now that I have one copy pre-sold I might have to start thinking about it!. P.S...I'm down here in Austin...
  19. Thanks Lon. I've GOT to get that album! Looks wonderful.
  20. Thanks everyone.
  21. Thanks Bill. I'm getting the feeling I was listening to Lou.
  22. Did Charlie Parker ever record "This Maquerade Is Over?" I was in a pharmacy today and it sounded like a later Parker (perhaps Verve) side since the sound was so good. However, I could have been hearing the original Lou Donaldson side on BN. If that's the case, man, Lou sure was blowing.
  23. A song I love that I don't hear a lot of is "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most."
  24. If the new portable B3 were 3 grand, I'd consider buying one. Maybe. However, these new B3s are so outrageously priced, who in the hell is buying them? Churches? Millionaires? Like Jim said, you can go get a mint B3 for at least half of what these new ones cost. And that's a mint one. The original. Look, last time I looked, B3s don't have digital readouts. Never trust an intstrument with a digital readout is my motto. Until the average gig pays about 10,000% more than what they do now, this just isn't reasonable for a working musician.
